"Sarcasm, Samuel. With how often I use it, I'm surprised you couldn't tell." As if she was trying to comfort herself. Was it so horrid to enjoy him company for once in her life? Right, it was. The painkillers were making things a bit harder to not enjoy. No doubt she'd be back to normal within the day... Week... She needed a new arm.
"You should see me when I actually use Magix. It's a riot." Now that she thought on that subject, it had been quite some time since she had gotten a dose. There wasn't much reason to do so when she didn't need it. "A compliment? Perish the thought. We know I'd never do such a thing." Kendra said with a scoff, waving the air with her right hand. It felt odd, the phantom sensation of her arm moving and fingers flexing along with her other hand. "A literal piece of me at your side. How romantic."
It was more so the fact she couldn't escape him. The more she spoke to him, the deeper the confusion plaguing the edge of her thoughts became. He was an absolute ass, but she couldn't seem to distance herself. "I'm a member of the Secret Police, Samuel. We know and see everything. Makes knowing other's business easier, doesn't it? Doesn't mean I really know details, just what I'm told. Not everyone likes to share, you know. And a double standard would be if I knew your sex life, but you didn't know mine. Unless you're planning to be part of mine, I don't much think you need to know." She might have said a bit too much, but she ended the words with a scoff.
There he went though, poking fun at her pride. It was part of what had gotten her into the mess she was in, so it was founded. For once. A frown crept onto her face at his comments on her age and saying who she would 'settle' for. What made him assume she would settle at all? Or find someone she deemed worth her time for more than work. "I'm only 23, Samuel. Not exactly a crypt keeper. Not being in a relationship is a bit usual at this age. Really though, settle? Why would I settle for someone instead of having exactly what I wanted?"
Second best wasn't something she was willing to settle for. Not when she could find a way to avoid it.

"It's hard to tell if you don't really mean what you're saying, is all. Your sarcasm is...lacking, at times." He shrugged somewhat. It wasn't a very big deal, but it was one thing that was hard to decipher. Really though, he didn't think pain killers were so necessary for her to enjoy being with him. They'd spent enough time together without her being hopped up on drugs, and she'd shown a kind of liking for him fairly consistently over the years.
"I have a few sticks of my own with me right now if you'd like? I'm sure we could all use some entertainment in this terrible somber setting. I have some real ones too, though I don't think they'd be as fun." Well, she did need pain killers right now, no? He could only imagine that getting one of your limbs ripped off smarted a bit. "Yes, I suppose kindness does elude you quite often. And I would hope so. Though it might end up being pieces, depending on what I'm given to work with. I'm fairly good but I do have a limit to my skills at the moment, you know. But yes, as you were saying, very romantic."
And he wouldn't say he was an absolute asshole, really now. Wasn't honesty supposed to be a virtue? So clearly he had at least one good point. "See, but you just contradicted yourself. You know and see everything, which means that you do in fact know about my sex life. Frankly, shouldn't you specifically know quite a bit about it? It's your job to keep an eye on me after all. And if you know nothing about it then I can't help but suspect you've been a bit lax in your surveillance duties. So then it is a double standard and I have every right to know." Logic wasn't so hard, now was it?
And please, everything he said to her was incredibly well founded. Just because she didn't care for it didn't mean he had no reason to say it. "Hardly a spring chicken though either. Have you even kissed someone? Because that is a bit unusual and frankly bordering on concerning for someone of your age. At least if you are interested in those sort of relationships it is. And frankly I believe you'll have to settle because your pride and desire to critique others wouldn't allow you to happily be with anything other than a mirror. And even then I think you might start to find faults. I've been thinking you might actually want to be unhappy, so then 'settling' works just fine, no?" He paused thinking it over for a moment. "Should I go on? I'm sure I could have fun with this theory if I pursued it."

“Maybe everything I say is both truthful and a lie. Who even knows.” She said in an airy tone, looking up at the ceiling. There was a strange line between enjoyment and annoyance. Samuel sat on that line pretty damn firmly, tilting into both sides almost constantly.
“I appreciate the offer, but I’ll pass. Not really interested in magic to begin with, and even more so your special… Brand. No offense, but I do have a small idea what it is.” Meaning she knew exactly what it was. She didn’t need to deal with an addiction like that, especially seeing as it would interfere with her work. Missing an arm also didn’t help with that.
Kendra shifted, feeling a touch of heat rise up to her cheeks. Sitting through his ’sessions’ with others had grown awkward over the past three years. At first she hadn’t really cared much, and just scoffed at how many partners he had. But now it was… Different. And she wasn’t sure why.
“Can we stop with the awkward 20 questions thing? I get it. I’m slowly rotting away and losing my potency as a sexual partner. That’s typically not my concern, as I’m sure you’ve gathered over the last few years. I have other things to focus on, and people don’t often peak my interest in that way. My hands are full enough with you, and I doubt you’d let me get too distracted with others before butting in.” She paused. “Hand. Either way, I’m perfectly content with how my life is now – Aside from the… Missing an arm part. I mean just look, my closest friend came to see me and even brought flowers. Isn’t he sweet.”
A sigh left her as she leaned back onto her bed, right hand going to rub the bandaged up nub. God, she felt so tired. Another round of painkillers must have just been pushed through her IV. That, or she just felt tired dealing with Samuel when she wasn’t up to snuff.
All she wanted to do was fall asleep and for him to be there once she woke up again.

"Was that supposed to sound mysterious? I hope being a poet isn't your fallback if they decide they don't need a one armed wonder in the Secret Police." He certainly wasn't going to be buying any books of hers anytime soon, at least. "And ah, here I thought I might trip you up. I would hope you have more than a small idea what it is though. I wouldn't want anyone to think I haven't been reporting to you like a good boy." Addiction might have been a little funny in her, he was just saying. She could probably power through it anyways. He could've have made weaker versions to wean her off of it even. But whatever, she didn't want to be adventurous, so he'd have to save his fun for someone else.
"Are you feeling awkward?" Then she did care about the subject, interesting. "Don't 'often'. Meaning some people do. So what's your type Kendra? I can keep an eye out for you. Maybe if we're lucky I can find one who owes me a favor. And really, I'm more than willing enough to let you have a bit of fun. I'm sure you have plenty of steam to blow off. Twenty three years worth, clearly." He laughed slightly as she finished talking. "Am I really your closest friend? Now I definitely am concerned for you. Don't the Secret Police have work parties or anything like that? You should try to be more sociable."
Samuel frowned slightly as she leaned back, a distinctly tired look on her face. Oh boo. "You're not going to sleep, are you? That's really very boring."

"A one armed wonder." She repeated the words under her breath, letting out a scoff afterwards. She wasn't going to stay armless for very long, he should know that. She was much too concerned with work to let that happen. "You're doing a lovely job being my good little boy. Keep up the work and I'll give you a reward. I'd hate to put my pistol to your skull and pull the trigger if you slip up."
The threat was so casual, it might have seemed like a joke to most that heard it. A very morbid joke. But should Samuel prove to be less than necessary any longer, it was her job to play clean up. Part of being his partner, his 'keeper'. She didn't much care about the people that he caught in his web, at least not the individuals very often. If he became a threat to the system at large, she would personally hunt him down. It was her job after all. He was her job.
"A bit awkward, yes." She shifted in the bed, wincing at the sudden sharp pain that shot through her left side. Right, she was lucky she didn't lose a chuck of her ribs. Or maybe she did. Seeing Samuel first thing when she woke up didn't much help with reading a report. "Don't worry, I have my eyes peeled for the type of person I'd like. Tall, dark, and handsome. That typical run down. Why so interested in finding me a mate, Samuel? Thinking it would be interesting to watch?" She raised a brow at him before giving an airy laugh."I have friends, don't you worry. Sad to see you don't conciser us closer, seeing as we're together quite often. That cuts pretty deep." Sarcasm, of course.
Her brow raised at him calling her need to sleep 'boring', a slight smile tugging at her lips. "With you here? Never. Who knows what you might try and poke me with. I can't have you bored. What kind of keeper would I be?" She glanced over at him, adjusting so her right arm crossed over her lap. God, it felt weird to not have the left cross over as well - It was growing increasingly harder to keep herself under control the more she moved.
"Will you be alright without me for a bit? It shouldn't take too long for me to be back on my feet. A month or two, tops. Depending on recovery and such. I'd imagine you'll be given another contact until I'm able to go back into the field. Don't die without me, hm? I'd miss you terribly." Kendra gave a laugh, eyes closing for a moment. Life without Samuel. Now wouldn't that be dull.
