Shortly after he'd shown Zeke the proper way to fix his flower crown, the blond seemed to hesitate, eyes shut tight. Poly lifted a hand in concern out of reflex, but shied away from actually reaching for the other young man. His fingers curled and he lowered his hand again, glancing to the side. No, it wouldn't end well if he invaded the space between them without Zeke's consent. It was already a shock that they were as close as they were. Instead, he waited, watched as the blond went back to creating a base for the flower crown.
The base was much sturdier this time, good for a beginner, and a different sort of excitement flickered into his eyes as Zeke reached for flowers. Really, he'd grown to realize you could learn things about people based on the types of flowers they chose. It wasn't surprising to him that darker types were reached for, and he continued to observe the other's movements.
With one flower successfully attached, Poly was just about to chime in with encouragement, but -- there was a smile on Zeke's face, small, but definitely there. Poly exhaled, shoulders relaxing a bit. This was good--and bad. Good, for the most obvious reasons. Bad, because every second he spent working with Zeke was getting him more attached. Which meant that Zeke's inevitable disappearing act was going to hurt worse.
"You're doing great," he murmured, resting his hands in his lap. "I recommend adding a little bit of baby's breath, the bright white will contrast pretty well. Don't you think?" He reached forward, fishing out a small amount of the flowers and nudging them closer to Zeke before giving him another smile.

Zeke had missed, of course, the motion made towards him when he'd closed his eyes for a moment. The dizziness and the ache still hung heavy over him in a thick smog but his motions to place flowers, even something so simple as that, seemed to wave away the worst of it from his immediate attention. The little crown wasn't the most beautiful by any stretch, but it at least appeared as if it were not going to fall apart immediately and when he glanced up from his hands to the flowers on the table, he caught the suggestion from Poly.
Pale flowers to contrast? It made as much sense as anything to him - certainly any of the flowers that were there would have looked good, though at the comment that he was doing great was met with a lean away, the smile disappearing for a second before it returned with a touch of bashful pink to his cheeks and he sort of gestured to the crown as if to say, 'are you sure, you have seen this right?' Zeke's eyes returned to the table to take the flowers that had been nudged nearer, a horrible wave of regret for something he hadn't even done yet trying to edge in on the moment of peace that he wanted so desperately to hold onto. He'd have to leave because this could only ever be a few moments of quiet breathing and soft smiles. Like the tiniest flicker of fire in a world of darkness, he'd take it. Zeke would take this moment and never know how to repay it short of just leaving and not letting Poly take any trouble for helping him.
But for now he would just take the flowers, just wish for his body to stop hurting him in retaliation for depriving it of sparks and magic and lightning through his veins and stay away enough for exhaustion to trump anxiety and panic. And so he reached for them, meaning to work them into the little crown and concentrate on that.
There was something in his movements that was almost overly careful or deliberate; he took extra care to not accidentally crush any of the flowers as he turned the clumsily constructed crown over in his hands, looking for the best place to add to it. A few went tucked right next to the dark blue that had drawn his eye to begin with, and he found places to put other clusters of white before stopping to examine his work and see if it needed anything else.
After a moment, his eyes wandered from the flower crown to Poly - he wasn't even sure if he was seeking a suggestion, or approval, or what but he just found that this was where his gaze was drawn, quiet and tired but definitely with his full attention.

There was just something so, so delicate about Zeke and the little flush to his cheeks, the little smile, they brought a wave of happiness over him. He didn't necessarily consider himself nurturing (no, that had been her job), but he just felt an absolute need to look out for him. Maybe he was weak for those tormented puppy eyes or something ridiculous like that. Poly gave an encouraging smile as the blond reached for the tiny white flowers, and watched as the crown itself was handled with gentle care. It was -- it stood out to him. Someone who could handle small flowers that way, so careful and with no intent to harm them, they couldn't be bad. Not in any way, shape, or form.
So when Zeke turned his eyes back on Poly, his breath caught and his heart fluttered and he probably had a ridiculous look on his face, but he took the moment to glance briefly at the crown again. "You got it, perfect," he noted, tilting his head but his eyes flickering back up to the other's. He looked so tired, but it only served to make Poly want to help him more.
Pausing for a moment (most definitely not because he let himself get lost in those pale blues, nope), he turned back to the flowers on the table in front of them before glancing back at the crown. "If you wanted to get ambitious you could add some of the much bigger flowers in, but you can keep it simple too and I think there's a beauty in that. It looks really nice, honestly, especially for a first try." A soft laugh escaped him and he folded his hands in his lap, angling himself more toward Zeke but not moving nearer. "I'd wear it, and I'd also treasure it. I mean that, truly." He offered the other a shy smile, cheeks just faintly reddened and a gentle gaze focused on the blond.
He... didn't know what he'd signed up for but -- he'd do whatever he could to make Zeke safe and comfortable.

Zeke found that he couldn't read the look that flashed over Poly's face before the other dropped it to say that the crown looked good. He... definitely noticed something but had no idea what it was and there wasn't much capacity in him to try and work it out. He tried to brush it off, instead picking up on the rest of what Poly had said - that he could add more flowers or he could call this finished.
He didn't really think he was ambitious enough to add more -ambitious wasn't him in any means of the word, and so he instead found his eyes falling down onto the crown as he turned it delicately over in his hands. His movements still felt clumsy and far too deliberate, weighed down and tired and he rested the crown in his lap for a moment as Poly continued speaking. What he said last, though- that flush to his cheeks, the way he looked when he said it.
Poly really was something perfect, wasn't he? Zeke found himself wondering for a moment if this was all just some withdrawal induced dream and if he were going to wake up to something horrible. It... certainly felt real but how could it be, honestly?
Reaching back to where he'd put down the notebook, Zeke placed it on his knee so he could write in it again. Jotting something down quickly, he handed both the crown and the notebook to Poly.
[[ if anyone could make it look decent, it'd be you ]]
Dream or no, he ... couldn't help saying something, even if it brought a flush to his own face. Stupid. Stupid for writing that, damnit.

It didn't take long too long for pen to hit paper again, and Poly briefly wondered if the blond was going to ask for more advice on making the crown. He waited, watched Zeke's hands instead of the actual ink gliding across the paper. They were different from his own--not delicate or particularly soft looking--no, definitely at least a little rough. But he couldn't particularly confirm that from this distance... not that the thought of those fingers even brushing across his cheek didn't send a shiver down his spine.
He'd gotten distracted, though, and Zeke had offered the notebook to him once more--along with the crown. After reading it, Poly's face flushed a deeper shade of red and he gently touched the flower crown made by the other man. Looking back, he realized Zeke was a bit flustered too, and he brought the flower crown up to his face, sort of hiding behind it for a moment before he lifted it up to place gently on his head.
"You're too sweet, Zeke," he noted, still blushing, but hiding behind a hand now as he looked at the blond. "What a flatterer; you know just what to say." Finally, Poly lowered his hand and turned a radiant smile on him. This -- he'd keep this flower crown as long as possible, no matter what, to serve as a reminder. He would not forget Zeke.
A yawn escaped him, though, and his smiled adopted a sleepy quality to it. "Ahh, sorry, I've been up all day so I guess I'm a little bit tired... I'll stay up with you as long as you want, though. I really feel relaxed around you; I don't know why."

A smile, still flustered but more content than he'd looked this entire time fell across his face when Poly put on the crown. He was just... Zeke didn't know but it scared him a bit how much he thought that he liked what was going on. He was of course grateful, so grateful for every bit of kindness that he was being shown and he didn't want to read anything or see anything in it at all because that would have been foolish. But Poly just made him feel so much nearer to calm than he remembered being in a long, long time. It wasn't quite the same as calm, completely relaxed or anything like that but.... it was good enough.
Zeke shook his head at what Poly said though, scratching down a reply before holding it out.
[[ Don't force yourself, I'll be alright. ]]
Even if he really, horribly didn't want to be left alone. The contact with Poly just made alone feel so much worse, silence feel so much louder and god he couldn't let himself be selfish and think about how much it was going to hurt to leave and be on his own again. He wanted to say that he felt the same way, that just being around Poly was nice, but that would.... that would make things difficult, if he could even manage to get himself to write it out.
After a moment of thought, though, he pulled the notebook back and hesitated before adding, [[ But I wouldn't mind if you sat out with me a moment longer. ]]
The half smile on his face was meant to not put pressure on Poly to sit out longer with him but... he couldn't stop a touch of 'please' from hitting the look in his eyes.

A smile. He got a smile. Sleepy or no, Poly's heart fluttered at the site and his own smile become completely rejuvenated. How could he deny that smile? Poly rested his hands in his lap again, all positive energy as he shook his head. "Don't worry, not forcing myself," he responded, shifting a bit in his seat. Still not getting too close to Zeke, but more making himself comfortable. He wanted to stay, because the longer he lingered around Zeke, then the longer Zeke would still be here.
"I'll sit up with you as long as you want," he chimed, although it was hard to argue the drowsiness that laced his words and mannerisms now. But he was definitely intent on staying awake with the blond. Leaning his head against his arm propped on the back of the couch (but careful not to lean on the flower crown), he kept his gaze on his company. "After all, that smile of yours is way too attractive for me to leave now..."
Any other time and he probably would have gotten more flustered over his own words, but the shift in position was just so comfortable. He rested his free hand against his lap once he realized how heavy his eyes really were. Ohh but no, no, if he closed his eyes then he couldn't communicate with Zeke, so he blinked hard a few times. "Did you want to make another or... were you done working with flowers for the night?" He definitely wouldn't mind either way, although he didn't want to leave the blond alone with the flowers in case he had any questions.

Zeke could see, as the other answered him, that Poly was tired, that he shouldn't have asked for a bit more time from him but it was so hard to let go of a conversation, of something like this when he didn't know when it might happen again. All he wanted was to be able to talk to someone like this, to try and pretend for even a moment that he was anything resembling okay because he missed the feeling so much. He had come to accept that he would never be okay again but he could let himself get close to it, be something like okay, couldn't he?
All that thought brought was a bittersweet smile and an ache in his chest as he leaned back into the couch, shaking his head to the suggestion of making another. He couldn't hold eye contact even though he wanted to believe that the compliment was sincere. Attractive smile? Hah. He knew that he was a mess, a written record of mistakes and hurt and the toll even a few years without a home could take. He appreciated it, though, sparing a glance back at Poly before picking up the notebook again.
Words that he could write flashed through his mind as the pen hovered above paper. I wish I could stay was first and foremost but he would never even consider that one for real. I wish you wouldn't bother with me, I'm only trouble, was the next but that was.... he couldn't write that either. Instead he went with something else, something a little easier to pen.
[[ Thank you again. I think I forgot that people like you exist, I'm so grateful to not be alone even just for a little while. ]]
His hand didn't move away from the paper at first and he considered scratching that last part out because somehow it.... hurt? to look at? But it was there now and he passed the notebook over, unable to look directly at Poly as he did so.

Slowly but surely, his mind was drifting with the lull of sleep. Poly couldn't even distinguish the bittersweet tinge to Zeke's smile, offering a gentle sleepy smile of his own in response. No more flowercraft, that was fine. He didn't know how much instruction he could give anymore, anyway -- his thought processes would probably have slipped to but of course this is what youre doing what do you mean thats confusing you just kinda do it and that was n o good.
He almost didn't notice as Zeke reached for the notebook again. He didn't even realize his eyes were falling shut, and sleep -- oh, sleep seemed like such a good thing right now. But somehow, somehow he caught himself at the right moment, blinking his eyes open just as the notebook was passed over to him again. Poly lifted his hand from his lap, taking it carefully, as blue eyes scanned slowly across the newest written words.
Pausing a moment to process, he offered the notebook back but gave the best smile he could (which was still kind of sleepy). The young man was flattered, really -- and also exceedingly happy that he could help like this. "Think nothing of it," he responded, words heavy with the tug of sleep on them. Poly shifted, eyes falling shut again.
"I'm grateful not to be... alone for a little while too... so..." his words started to come slower, the smile slipping a little from his lips as he buried his face a little more against his arm. "Please stay... a li'l... longer..." Poly's murmuring was almost indecipherable as he fell asleep, flower crown still on his head and body still angled against the back of the couch.

Poly seemed to be falling asleep before his eyes but Zeke didn't really do anything to stop him, just watching so he didn't slump over in a way that he'd fall off the couch. He looked so peaceful and he didn't want to wake him, even with the suddenly growing dread and anxious buzz that had began again now that he was 'alone' in a way of speaking. Zeke shifted where he sat, fighting the urge to fidget uncomfortably and then moved to sort of clear any of the loose wire pieces and flower petals off the couch, placing them on the table alongside the notebook.
When that was done, though, he really didn't... know what to go and do, now. He was still exhausted beyond everything else he felt, but he didn't feel right sleeping in Poly's bed, despite the fact that he'd been given it hours ago. He couldn't just sleep on the portion of the couch he'd been sitting on either - Zeke knew he'd feel horrible if he woke Poly up somehow and he just... he needed more space than that.
And speaking of Poly, despite the fact that he had fallen asleep like that, would he... be comfortable there? Zeke supposed he could do something about that, at least.
With his mind made up, he shuffled back into the hall and into Poly's room and gathered the blanket, returning to the living room to place it gently on him. At least, even if he'd fallen asleep out here, he'd be hopefully comfortable? Zeke himself made his way back to the single chair, finding a comfortable way to relax across it (really, he'd slept so many more horrible places than this) and shut his eyes, forcing himself to try and rest. He had thought it would have been difficult, but somehow he was calmed still by the knowledge that someone meaning him no harm was so near by, and by the scent of the flowers still lingering in the room. It took him much less time than he thought it would have to fall asleep, and when he did, it was far more restful a sleep than most nights.
