The needle dangled from the string against her jaw but she didn't look away from the doctor. There was the familiar look of terror just like all those years ago. In truth, the eye thing didn't really bother her. Sure it was annoying when the mod died during a mission but she'd adjusted to operating without it just fine. Besides, it helped her look more intimidating.
"I kind of required medical attention. Like right now. Want to finish stitching me up, doc?" she gestured to the half finished stitches in her face. She grunted when he went back to why she was here. Small world.
Once her face was more or less sewn back together, black stitches hidden behind gauze taped to her face, she leaned back on her hands. She didn't have much left with the novicane dulling the pain. "So...what? Is this like your charity business when you're not treating the high class? Would've figured you'd have that Krueger douche up your ass after you helped save his life. Well, helped very little. But still."

Levenin was surprised to see a fist wasn’t drilling its way into his face right about now. This was totally unlike the Ellie he knew before, but maybe that was due to the painkiller dulling her out a bit. If he didn’t hurry, it’d wear off and then he’d be in real trouble. Fumbling hurriedly with the needle and finishing his work before mercy was withheld, Lev put the final touches on the wound.
”So I’d suggest not talking too much if you can. Or opening your mouth too wide… You know, take it easy. You’ll be sore after the shot wears off anyway so it shouldn’t be hard to remember.”
He watched in relief as the woman remained calm even after he was absolved of duty. An uncomfortable personal question, but it was only fair. He’d thrown many of those at her earlier. ”I mean… I guess you can think of this place like a charity… But this is all I do nowadays.”
Levenin turned away from her, forcing a smile as he began putting back individual tools into their wrapping. ”…I haven’t been back to the High Class in years. I was… demoted not too long after our meeting, actually. I’ve been living in the Lower Class for a while and come into this district every day for work. Well, almost every day.”

Oh. Well. That kind of sucked for the guy. The whole affair five years ago had been fucked and she hadn't had much hope for his success afterwards, for how much he sniveled and whined. But part of her figured that he'd have his life paved for him, given it looked like he'd helped save a whole group of high class assholes from rogue vigilantes.
Vigilantes that she later found out had been there to make a statement about Krueger's corrupt policies. The doctor had been doing some less than legal experiments on some slum residents to get ahead in the medical community. They'd gone about things wrong, but she couldn't fault them for trying. If she hadn't been there and been one of the ones they threatened to kill, she might even look back on them with sympathy.
"Shit, so this is your job? Fuck, man." She glanced about the place. It was a sorry sort of place, that was for damn sure. "Do you even have Novigel in a place like this?"

Levenin laughed uncomfortably. She seemed less than impressed with his chosen profession, and maybe he could see how one would think that way. Canaan did many important things for the community, but it didn’t stop it from being a rundown charity case of a building in the Slums with barely enough doctors to go around most days. And he wasn’t even a real doctor, not like the rest of them.
”I still wanted to help people so I guess I ended up here along the way,” he said, clutching the wrapping of tools in his hand. ”I’m… I’m not that great at what I do but… it’s the only thing I could think of that’d contribute to society. It’s rough sometimes, but it’s not all bad.”
If anyone could overhear them, Lev knew he’d get in trouble. Spending time on polite conversation with patients wasn’t discouraged, but there was work to be done, more people waiting in the lobby for their turn. But with a chance reunion like this, Levenin couldn’t see her off just yet.
”We have Novigel… Well, sort of... The knock off kind. It’s not as good but it’s better than nothing, and at least we can afford it. Even that's getting hard to come by nowadays, though...”
The black market was a mixed blessing, mostly when it came to prices. Costs fluctuated on a daily basis, and unfortunately were looking to drain their wallets for even the most basic of things in recent weeks. ”If we had the real Novigel, I don’t even think we’d use it. We’d be afraid to because something like that is pretty unheard of around here anymore. Someone might even try and steal it if they knew it was here.”

Ellie examined her face in the silver door of one of the storage cabinets. Through the murky and dirty shine, she could see the pinkish tint to the gauze on her cheek. She carefully prodded the bandage and winced at the pain. It hurt, but her face was together. The guy might be hopeless, but he wasn't completely without skill.
And a clinic in such desperate need of supplies did present a very interesting opportunity.
"What if someone could get you better supplies?" she turned her focus back to him and letting her hand drop away. "Say you had a...kindly benefactor that was willing to deliver supplies right to your door? Surely if that benefactor ever had need of medical attention, like stitches or whatever, they would take priority over anyone else, yeah?"
She grinned as much as she could with her face split as it was. "What if I can get you better supplies? Could we have a deal?"

His skin grew cold and for a second, Levenin forgot how to breathe. ”What… What do you mean?” he asked. He couldn’t play dumb, as much as he wanted to. Even back then, there was something off about her. A bodyguard? Maybe just for that one night, luckily for him and the other hostages or he might not be here right now to hear this proposition. Her very skin told too many stories, ones that didn’t have happy endings or memories to share. But this woman couldn’t have been a Vigilante, could she? She’d shot so many trying to save the hostages.
Lev gripped a loose bit of cloth by his waist, twisting it hard between his fingers. ”I shouldn’t… I mean, we the clinic, shouldn’t… C-Can’t. It’s too dangerous. If the police found out, we’d…”
”In trouble” was what he wanted to end that sentence with. They’d been interrogated before by those tracking down criminals in the past. Cyrene would kill him for even letting this conversation happen in the first place. ”I-I don’t think you should… You should go.”
Levenin peered around the curtain leading out of the room, paranoid someone was nearby listening in. ”The, uh, stitches will be safe to take out in a f-few days… Uhh, they'll help blood pool to that area so the rest will heal just fine… When there’s scarring, you’ll…”
He paused and let the curtain fall back into place. Was turning her down a mistake? The sad state of their supply closet begged for any kind of relief, but Lev knew the risks of tangling with the underground. The evidence walked into the clinic every day and yet…
"What do you want? I'm... not that good. I dunno if I could do everything you'd want. I'm not agreeing or anything, but... Why me and not someone else?"

"Do you know another free, down on its luck clinic that treats sliced faces without a single question as to how it got sliced?" she arched a brow at him, moving to lean back against the storage cabinet and crossing her arms. "I'm not asking you to do anything illegal, technically. You said this is a charity, yeah? So you take donations. All I'm offering to do is to make some...generous donations, in exchange for a fast pass to the front of the line."
She pushed away from the cabinet to stand closer to him. Their height difference might make it difficult to be intimidating, but she liked to think her obvious strength and scar riddled face made up for it. The blind eye tended to freak people out as well, when the mod was deactivated like now. "You might have noticed, I have a tendency to get bloody. And having a personal doctor would go a long ways. And I don't think you can really afford to turn me down."

Levenin shrunk back when she became more terse with him. She was wrong, but also had a very good point. ”I mean, we can’t be the only ones. The Slums are a large district so there’s probably others somewhere…” He wanted to give examples, but his mind drew blanks. Canaan was far from the only charity clinic. However, it was the only one he could recall from memory.
”B-But it is illegal. If we got questioned by the police and they found out we were lying… You know what would happen, right?” Lev asked. Of course she knew. Like the consequences would stop her, or why would she risk it for a living?
If he shrunk back anymore, Levenin would’ve been sticking out of the curtain separating him from the privacy of the room. He really needed to learn not to blab about how needy they were, or grow enough of a spine to say no. He didn’t think someone would exploit their destitution like this, but imagine if he’d kept his mouth shut. Ellie would’ve been gone, and he wouldn’t be sweating bullets at the moment.
”I c-can’t give you favoritism here,” he started. ”But if you want a doctor, it can just be me. And only me, no one else.”
This was a horrible deal to make but good in theory— him as the sacrificial lamb in exchange for items they desperately needed. So long as the other doctors didn’t get dragged into it, it was fine… Right? It was a worthwhile agreement if she didn't get caught and spill the beans on them being collaborators anyway.
”And you can’t come here without me… You know, to… donate. The others can’t find out. If they knew I was talking about this... I-I don’t want trouble for anyone…”
Levenin gulped harshly. ”It all has to be on me.”

"Who said anything about anything illegal? Are you assuming I'm going to steal them? That's rude, Lev." She scoffed. She would be stealing the supplies, of course, but still. Rude of him to just assume that. "You don't need to know where they're from, just that they were donated to your clinic. Nothing legally compromising you with that."
Ellie attempted to grin, which was admittedly a bad idea when you'd recently had your face sliced open. Fuck. So she winced instead but nodded. "Okay. Deal. You don't seem like you'd kill me if I wasn't already dying, so okay." She held out a hand to him, "You'll be my personal doctor and this place will find itself in possession of better supplies."
The first thing she'd need to get would be some high dose painkillers, some that she would certainly be saving for herself. This clinic's stuff was good but only for a very brief time. Her face was already starting to throb again. "I think we're gonna make good friends, Lev."

”I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to assume…”
Levenin, for once, wasn’t feeling apologetic despite his words. The events of that party were slowly coming back to him. A bodyguard? For a night, maybe. The reaction of that undercover officer, his insistence that she’d “ruined the plan,” whatever plan there was besides demanding something of Dr. Kreuger and killing innocents as ransom. No, this woman’s skills weren’t going to be legal. He wasn’t so stupid as to assume otherwise.
He looked at her hand, a bead of sweat rolling down the contours of his cheek before accepting it. Her grasp was firm and strong. ”You’ll abide by the conditions, right? You know, to keep everything secret? If anyone finds out, then this… Everything will stop.”
Lev desperately wanted to stand his ground. Dealing with these types of people meant no backing out, no signs of weakness, to be as affirming as possible so as to not fall victim to schemes or tricks. And here she was, nearly a foot shorter than him, and yet he was afraid to make direct eye contact with the woman. If Ellie hadn’t caught on already, then she must’ve known he’d be easy to manipulate. This idea wasn’t going to end well for him, but that was for the future. The now was much more important.
”How will I find you again? Here isn’t, uh, exactly a safe meeting place.”
But what would he really find? As soon as the words left his mouth, Levenin was sure he'd dived headfirst into something well beyond what he knew.
