“I suppose you’re right,” said Caith in regards to the formula. “That’s fine. I was planning on solving it whether the force needed it or not. Figure it could make for a fun afternoon. I might even try it without a chemist nearby—that’ll make for a greater challenge.”
At Elgen’s hesitant comment, Caith raised her brow, wondering what he meant exactly. Sure, she had been a little tense driving back to the MC, but that was mostly because of the day she had been through and the fact that other drivers on the road—drivers with fully working legs, she might add—were incompetent and irritating.
“I’ll admit you’re a difficult man to get along with,” she said in her usual blunt fashion. “but I’ve dealt with worse. You’re competent and reliable, and at the end of the day, that matters far more to me than personality. Still, I think you and I get along fine.” She added a slight smile and snorted at Elgen’s plan to smoke. “Enjoy that, then. You and I are done for the night, and I need some rest. Goodnight, Galbraith.”
Caith then wheeled up into the back of her van, started the engine, and waved to Elgen before pulling out of the lot. And only now, as she moved farther and farther away from him, did Caith let out a deep sigh, nearly sinking into her seat. It was her turn to worry about first impressions. Now that the day was done, and her mind could relax, it chose to do the opposite, to remind her that she had just spent the entire day with a member of the Secret Police, a man who could make her dreams come true or grind them into dust.
She sighed into her hand and touched her throbbing forehead, praying she had impressed him.
