Yes, good, Zeke was going to get a treat and Polydeuces couldn't be more pleased about that! But Kyrie's teasing had flustered the knight, too, or so the prince had noticed by stealing a quick glance over his shoulder. Honestly, this actually served to lessen his own flush, and he glanced away again with a much more satisfied smile. Satisfied, he didn't quite know why he felt like that, but he did, and he found himself gripping just a little bit tighter at the knight's hand. He shouldn't. He really really should not go down this road. It could only lead to pain and heartache but -- no, it was just a little innocent hand holding, just harmless little things. Nothing serious, nothing would come of it, so why not have fun with it?
Kyrie, on the other hand, was laughing in spite of them both, and waved it off. "Oh, sure, sure," she'd chimed with a glint in her eye, before shifting to reach for a knife and cutting a particularly hefty slice of cake for the knight. Gingerly, she placed it on a small sheet, folding it up so as not to damage the icing. "One slice of cake, and one tart, and a couple of utensils, for my favorite customer and his," she paused, all smug smiles, clearly debating further teasing for a beat. "Faithful knight."
Polydeuces offered a soft laugh, retrieving a fair bit of coin from his pocket to pay for the treat, before offering the cake to Zeke and taking his own tart. "Thank you, m'lady. I'm sure we'll see you again." Tugging at his knight's hand again, he tilted his head. "Shall we see ourselves out? I know of a particularly lovely spot where we could sit for a moment and enjoy our sweets." His expression held a touch of excitement in it. Mostly because he never really enjoyed sweets with others--which was a terrible shame and an injustice because sweets were certainly delicious, so why would you not share them?

While Polydeuces laughed at the tease, Zeke just sort of kept his eyes anywhere but. Yes. Faithful Knight, just doing his job, certainly didn't have an impression of the Prince beyond that this was an important person to protect. Yes, all of that was incredibly true. Zeke was fairly happy to see that the Prince suggested heading back out rather than sitting in, though- as much as Kyrie seemed nice, he wasn't sure how much teasing he could really take.
Zeke offered a thanks to the woman as well, and in response to Polydeuces, added, "I have no objection to that."No, he did really want to get out of there oops. Also eating the cake, that sounded good too. Allowing the Prince to continue leading him by the hand, he followed closely behind and asked once out of ear shot, "Is- she always so.... " and then he wasn't quite sure how to describe it so he just gestured, cake in hand, and hoped that the Prince would understand.

Of course Zeke didn't really have an objection; Polydeuces couldn't think of why he would! So onward he went, leading Zeke through the wooden door again and out into the brisk weather. His eyes briefly scanned the area, before leading the blond along a path that headed toward trees and a small break in buildings. A trailed off question was initiated, though, and the prince chuckled once.
"Lady Kyrie is very... eccentric, yes. She's not afraid to poke fun of people regardless of their status, so I found her quite refreshing. It took me a little while to get used to it, but she truly means well and is generally seeking to make light of situations." Pausing, he pardoned himself and Zeke, skirting around a couple standing around discussing how to best angle a roof while they built a new stable. Before long, he had led them to a rather small stretch of shaded grass between two buildings, which had simple stone benches dotting the area in addition to smaller, younger trees poking up.
Leading Zeke over to one of these benches, he sat, but was still reluctant to release the knight's hand. He offered an affectionate smile, head tilting just slightly. "I apologize, she didn't ruffle your feathers too much, did she? I fear I may have been enjoying the circumstances of the situation a bit too much to have been aware of any unpleasant feelings. I'll try to be more mindful in the future, because I only want you to feel comfortable being with me, Zeke." A light sound of laughter escaped him, and he broke his gaze, finding his tart very fascinating as he realized that he could only look up at the blond for so long without a flush coming over his own cheeks--especially if those pale eyes were looking back at him.

Zeke found his question about the lady in the bakery answered, though mostly waved off as her being overly friendly. Well... that was certainly a way to explain it. Still, if the Prince didn't seem to be too concerned by the teasing, Zeke would just have to write it off as ordinary. He just followed Polydeuces instead, moving along with him around some people building something. The area was... well, it still seemed safe, even if it was a bit busy. And what was more, the Prince seemed to know his way around so that should have been enough for Zeke to be a little at ease. Regardless, he wasn't; there were too many places that a threat could come from for him to not at least be looking around, taking in everything and half building potential plans of escape if danger were to show up.
It was for this reason that he found himself almost not realizing he was being spoken to again. Did she... had she ruffled his feathers? This of course had brought Zeke's mind back to the teasing and he found a tinge of pink in his cheeks again, his eyes drawn away from the prince as he answered.
"It was - it was no inconvenience to me," he practically stuttered, trying not to let it get to him. Their hands were still linked together even as the two sat down at one of the benches, though of course he knew he should let go. Zeke forced himself to pull his eyes back up, finding a touch of a smile upon his lips as he looked back at the Prince and trying to put the thoughts behind him. "So long as you were enjoying yourself, I have no reason to be displeased."
He really... he really needed to get ahold of this. It wasn't very long that he had been assigned to this position and even still, he felt himself begin to get flustered whenever the Prince spoke so casually to him. This wouldn't do for a knight, but he of course wasn't going to deny the young royal any sort of recreation that he wanted, so long as he was safe. He just... he needed to make sure he didn't allow himself to become distracted - for Polydeuces sake.

When Zeke stuttered, Polydeuces' laughter settled a little and the little smile returned to his lips. Good, it wouldn't be any help if Zeke was on edge from being teased, especially if it hadn't been the prince teasing him in the first place. It didn't take too long for pale eyes to be on him again, though, and he felt his heart skip a beat. "Mm--mhm!" he responded with a little nod, closing his eyes as he tried to smile and ignore the warmth on his cheeks.
Maybe, maybe if he didn't look at Zeke when the knight was looking at him, maybe that would help. Because as carefree and bold as he tried to be, he didn't know what he'd do if this developed past a little bit of shallow infatuation. Regardless of this, he was aware their hands were together (giving Zeke's a subconscious little squeeze as the realization hit him again) and knew he should... let go.
Just let go, and stop this where it stood.
His grip at the blond's hand loosened briefly, but he quickly gave it yet another squeeze, opening his eyes and looking away with furrowed brows. He. He didn't want to. Maybe, he could be selfish just a little longer. It couldn't hurt. It wouldn't be a distraction for Zeke, anyway, because knights just didn't -- do that sort of thing. They were stronger than him.
"A-anyway, I do hope you enjoy the cake. Lady Kyrie always surpasses my expectations -- things taste even better every time!" There was a touch of nervousness to his tone now, never mind the fact that he wasn't even digging into his own tart yet. Was it selfish of him to ride on the hope that Zeke would let go first? And at the same time, was it even more selfish to dread the thought?

The two of them occupied the little bench and Polydeuces seemed to be relieved in Zeke's insistence that he wasn't bothered by the teasing, making that smile that Zeke had a hard time looking away from. He knew he shouldn't have let the Prince steal his attention like this but he honestly couldn't help it. The young man was nothing that Zeke had expected. All he knew he had to do was not let himself truly... feel anything, right? Flustered looks and shy smiles were one thing so long as he didn't compromise his duty. The Prince must have just been sweet like this, anyway, so of course it could mean nothing.
After a moment, there was a gentle squeeze at his hand but the two stayed holding on, neither quite pulling away just yet. Zeke knew that he could, but as there was no reason to; he wasn't going to remove his hand from the Prince's grip because it wouldn't do to disappoint him and... well, as much as the idea had flustered him initially, it wasn't as if it were a sudden feeling and it certainly wasn't detracting from the attention he could be paying to their surroundings. What was taking that attention away was the way he found his gaze slipping back to Polydeuces and then the tone he caught on the young royal's voice. It sounded more tense than before and this warranted a more detailed glance at the area around them for anything that might have been making the Prince nervous.
Withdrawing his hand just in case and also because cake. Sweets. Good sweets that he normally didn't indulge in, Zeke instead decided to try and ensure he felt more relaxed while also keeping an eye on things himself. Just... just in case it wasn't nothing.
Opening the delicate paper that had been wrapped around the cake, he gave the Prince a smile and commented, "She must be skilled if that is true," and then after a moment, "Which means that I cannot really blame you for sneaking out to get sweets."
Hopefully the softer words would help, because it wouldn't do for Polydeuces to be uncomfortable, especially if Zeke were to be keeping him safe.

It didn't take long after he prompted Zeke to try the cake that the knight's hand slipped away, and Polydeuces clenched his teeth as he almost moved his hand after Zeke's. An uneasy rhythm settled in his chest and he pulled his hand back, curling his fingers into a fist and holding it against his heart. It's not fair. For someone like him, he knew, he was taught ever since he was little. Someday, he was going to have a princess wed to him, much like what happened with his own parents. Someday, he would have a wife as his queen and he would certainly love her.
Yes, well, not how they wanted. Why not another prince? Why not a knight? Why not --
Ah, Zeke had said something, snapping Polydeuces' away from his brooding thoughts. Blue eyes fell on the other once again, taking in the smile and soft words, and he clenched his fist tighter at his chest, cheeks flushing a bit more as he sort of lowered his head. A smile wasn't on his lips again until he forced himself to look down and find interest in the tart sitting on his lap.
"Yes, you see, it's the perfect addition to... freedom," the last word was almost fumbled, and he quickly took to unwrapping his treat. But, gods dammit, his stomach was in knots now. He glanced up -- not at Zeke, but forward -- and mentally reprimanded himself. Stop this behavior at once, Polydeuces. Get a grip. You are the future king, and you can handle any challenge presented to you.
...
But still. A small smile touched his face, though he couldn't look at Zeke -- no, he knew, his expression would probably read a little too sad, and he couldn't have that noticed. It was unbecoming of a prince. "We'll have to sneak away together to have it again -- I promise to inform you next time." Polydeuces finally took one of the small forks Kyrie had given them to bring a bite of the tart to his mouth, forcing himself to enjoy it. It did work, to an extent -- it was one of his favorites, after all.

Now that Zeke was somewhat looking for it, he couldn't shake the feeling that someone were watching them. Pale eyes caught no sign of movement but still; it was in the air, in the gaps between birdsong and words. Something, somehow was not quite right. Swallowing it down though not tuning out the surrounding area, Zeke allowed the soft smile to remain on his face, answering the prince. It was likely lucky for him that he was paying attention to their surroundings - he did not take notice the touch of sadness to the Prince's expression in favor of having his attention elsewhere.
"I would appreciate that, knowing that you wished to escape to a moment of freedom and sweets. It might save me the trouble in searching for you and I... also, enjoy this."
To punctuate this, he finally took a bite of his cake - and immediately it showed on his face just how good he thought it was. Zeke had been expecting, of course, for it to be delicious but this was potentially one of the best desserts he'd ever had. Though he considered himself an appreciator of sweets, they were... definitely treats few and far between for the knight. He had meant to speak afterwards but the first mouthful of cake was so good that it stole his words for a moment.
Now he was distracted, if only for a second. Where had that place been his whole life again?
Drawing his attention back, though, he cleared his throat and the unprofessional, un-knightly expression from his face. "There is no need to hurry back nor to put off other outings like this again if you wish. You are safe here, so long as you are with me- you have my word."
And so he meant to keep it - especially because that meant that the Prince could afford more freedoms like this.

It was most certainly a relief that Zeke wasn't quite able to pick up on his gloomy feelings, and he continued to eat his tart without another word. At least it was hard to remain in a foul mood with Lady Kyrie's sweets involved. He finally spared a glance over at his knight as the blond spoke, and an easier smile sparked across Polydeuces' lips as he took in the look on the other man's face. What a nice expression -- too bad the prince couldn't exactly surprise him with cakes in the future. He'd definitely have to return with him, though.
The expression disappeared soon enough, probably considered to be "unprofessional" or "un-knightly" or something silly like that. "I believe it," he replied softly, turning back to his tart. "I'm sure you would rescue me should I be put in harm's way." A light laugh escaped him before he took another bite of his tart. Ah, almost done with it. Such a shame.
Despite being unaware of the feeling someone was watching them -- no, rather, because he was used to being watched, it wasn't exactly a significant thought to acknowledge -- he did glance around briefly. It was merely to distract himself further, really. Granted it was a lot of the same as usual, people discussing building plans or children running around playing tag. The city was so peaceful, why would he ever expect anything else?

There was something to the way their conversation had gotten that seemed almost quiet and bittersweet; Zeke wasn't sure what to make of it, really - he had only just noticed it but had returned his attention to the way that something in the area felt off. Perhaps it was the reminder of his duties taking away the prior informality of their interactions; the Prince must have been so tired for formalities and duties, surely that was the problem.
Still - despite that, despite whatever appearances could be put out, he knew it was important to listen to instinct telling him that there was something to watch for, someone watching them, something amiss. A glance around the area was met with nothing at first and he made to take a bite of his cake before responding when there was suddenly something, a noise.
A threat.
Zeke was up and off the bench quickly, turning to face a dagger-wielding man coming at the two of them from behind. His motions, quick and precise, brought an elbow to the chest of the attacker which shoved him back. The man staggered before Zeke used his free hand to twist the dagger out of the attacker's grip, and by the time the man had fallen he had drawn his sword and aimed it directly down to point at the man's chest. Clearly a warning, not an attack.
"Stay where you are," he said simply, though the message should have already been clear. For a moment he glanced over his shoulder to Polydeuces. "I apologize; I should not have been careless enough to let him get this close, it will not happen again."
Pale eyes turned back down towards the man, though, he wondered -did he know who he had been attacking? From the panicked look on his face, Zeke certainly didn't think so - likely this had been impulse sort of thing, but he still didn't back off. It sounded as if someone had called for the guard, which would simplify things. For now then he'd just hold the attacker in place. It didn't seem difficult now that the man seemed shaken by the realization of what he had just done.
And then another realization dawned: Oh. His cake.....
