Laraine put her hand to her mouth in horror as the officer spilled his coffee. Oh no oh no oh no she hadn’t wanted anything like that to happen oh damn this was a bad idea -
Well, maybe it was, but that made it even more important that she try to help now.
“I’m so sorry! Really and truly! I didn’t mean to cause so much distress!”
She swallowed nervously and clasped her hands together, trying to ready herself to speak clearly as the policemen talked. It was hard to not just burst into saying -
…what, exactly? She wanted to help, but…was there really anything she hadn’t already told Dante that might be useful?
There must be something, something she’d seen…
She thought back. Her memory sharpened, as she was in almost the same place again. She remembered.
Careful to lower her voice several tones below its normal chipper volume, she spoke quickly.
“About an hour from the current time, on the night of the crime, is when I believe I saw a maximum of two silhouettes leave the building. However I realized that I only saw even those incredibly briefly - it was as if they simply vanished. Obviously that’s not possible, so they must have had an even higher level of technology beyond simply breaking into the building.”
She suddenly felt incredibly inconsequential. But she remembered that now: it had happened, she just hadn’t thought anything of it at the time.
“I can go and not distract you anymore.” She said in a rush. “I just…remembered and wanted to help."

"They vanished?" asked Dante, astonished by the story. He looked over to see Laraine, his eyes big and awestruck like a child hearing a bedtime story. "What could do that? Some sort of cloaking device?"
"Eyes forward, Vasari." Damon gently grabbed the top of Dante's white head and turned him back to the greenhouse. He then returned his eyes to Laraine. "Now look, we appreciate your help, and we'll keep this in mind, but you need to go. Now." After making sure that Dante was focusing, Officer Damon leaned further out his window and lowered his voice as he continued, "You seem like a nice kid—like him—but from now on, don't talk to an officer when he's on duty like this, okay? Call the department and they'll send us your message."
Dante then suddenly reached over and patted Damon's shoulder as he said, "Sir. Look."
Out by the greenhouse, caught in a ray of faux moonlight, were two black silhouettes. One was clearly male with its broad shoulders, while the other was more slender, its gender hard to discern. The two figures were holding black boxes in their hands, and they moved away from the greenhouse with haste.
Before Damon could even react, Dante took action, scrambling out of the car before sprinting down the alley. He pumped his arms, his gun still at his waist, and he charged after the figures with impressive speed, shouting, "Hey! Freeze! LCPD!"
"Vasari!" called Damon. "Vasari, get back here. Don't go off on your own." Those words faded into silence, drowned out by the beating of Dante's feet against the concrete. He ran around the side of the greenhouse and chased the fleeing figures down another alley. Maybe, if he was fast enough, he could catch these two before they vanished.
Though Dante was one of the more fleet-footed officers on the force, he could just barely keep up with the figures. They seemed to almost fly down the twisting alleyways, their bodies almost blurs of motion. Dante kept his eyes on them the entire time. Even if they disappeared, maybe he could lunge for them and catch them at the last second. In his blind focus, however, he failed to see the line of trash bags at his feet. They stretched across the entire alley, and Dante tripped over them, falling forward with a yelp. Though he rolled at the last second and bounced back to his feet, he lost valuable time. The figures made a hard turn, and Dante kept racing after them, desperate to keep up.

Laraine nodded obediently and turned to go, face still burning and throat slightly choked from how embarrassed she felt. She hoped the other two couldn’t see as well as she could - it was plain on her face.
But she still stopped and looked when Dante spoke to his superior and sucked in a gasp - the thieves! Or extremely suspicious figures, at the very least. What were they carrying? Even she couldn't quite tell, which made her nervous.
The woman hastily scrambled out of the way as the white-haired got out of the car, pursuing them and shouting. She clenched her fists and bit her lip, uncertain of what she should do. Interfering had hardly been right so far…
Still she took off as well, worried about the young officer. If she got in trouble, so be it, but she couldn’t just leave him on his own against people who might well be willing to kill him.

"Crap," said Dante, grimacing as he watched the figures get even further away. He was going to lose them. Once more, he shouted, "Stop! This is the police. Stop right now!" They had to have heard that, right? It was hard to project his voice while running, and he didn't have a big booming shout, but they would have heard it. No way they didn't.
But they kept running, about to make yet another turn. Dante was so far away—at least half a block. If they turned now, he might lose them.
Grimacing, Dante pulled out his pistol, held it out in front of him, and fired. The shot echoed off the walls, and the bullet tore through the air before skipping off the concrete—missing a runner's foot by less than an inch. The runner flinched and let out a feminine cry, but it kept on running alongside its partner, turning down the next alley.
"No, no, no," muttered Dante, lowering his gun and pumping his arms again as he raced for the corner.
Just as he had expected, when he turned down the alley, he couldn't see anyone in sight. The sky was cloudy, and what little of the moonlight that shined down hit nothing but the intersection at which Dante stood. He couldn't see where the runners had gone. There were so many branching alleyways, and there were no signs of movement. All he could even hear was the faint, lingering echo from his gunshot. Not a single footstep could be heard.
Dante grabbed the side of his head and shut his eyes, frustrated and looking like he might cry. "Dammit," he whined, gritting his teeth. He threw his arms down and started running again, trying desperately to find the runners. But when he took a single step, a sudden pain surged from his neck and down to the base of his spine. The flat of someone's hand struck him hard and sent him crumbling to the ground, his gun flying out of his hand and skipping across the ground.

Laraine’s breath became sharp in her throat, and she forced herself to calm a bit. She’d be no use to Dante if she couldn’t keep ahold of herself.
She heard his gunshot and nearly faltered, tripping, her green eyes darting around nervously. Who - or more importantly, in what direction had he shot at?
She bit her lip and tasted blood but kept going, even if her energy waned the shot of adrenaline the noise gave her kept her feet tapping against the concrete.
She arrived just as a figure even her eyes couldn’t make out many details of struck the poor boy and she screamed.
“OFFICER! OFFICER WE NEED HELP!” Laraine screamed with every ounce of power she had, not even caring if the assaulter turned on her next. It was the only hope she and the boy had of making it out of here alive as she took a defensive pose. She might not be a fighter, but damned if she wouldn’t go down without at least giving this menace a few bruises to think about.

The figure's body snapped, head turning to face Laraine, shoulders rising defensively. Now that it wasn't running so fast, and with Laraine so close, it was easy to see that the thief was clad in a hooded robe. The robe was thick, making it hard to determine the person's gender, and the hood was so deep that the person's face was cloaked in shadow. The alley's own shadows didn't make things any easier, but the figure's posture was at least readable.
A faint grunt escaped the figure, and it reached one hand up to touch the back of its hooded neck. Its shoulders then rose and fell deeply, its legs bending a little lower. Its head flicked back to the many connecting alleyways, always looking back to Laraine. Slowly, the figure stepped backwards, putting some distance between itself and Laraine. Its head kept looking around, drifting left and right, but it kept focusing back on Laraine.
Then, the figure seemed to sigh, its entire body slacking, its breath loud enough to hear. A moment later, it darted forward, aiming a punch at Laraine's jaw. The fast, snappy motion caused fruit to fly out from beneath the thief's robe, where they smacked and squished against the ground.

Laraine breathed heavily, acutely aware of the danger she was in and terrified. Her eyes never left the hooded figure but even so, she was still surprised by their sudden movement and while she managed to skid backwards, was still somewhat hit by the punch and felt blood in her mouth, uncertain if anything was broken. Her hand flew to her jaw, but she told herself that all she had to do was stay conscious and keep the thief here until the other officer came.
He had to come. Didn’t he?
Her troubled thought were pushed to the side in favor of a frantic kick at the cloaked figure’s knee. Damn, she couldn’t scream anymore…then again, it was probably better to save what breath she had left.
If only she could see a damn thing about her attacker! But they were well disguised enough to cheat even her feline eyes of anything useful she might see.
How had it all gone so wrong?
