Rick grinned as Tai accepted the offer of food. Chalk one up to his skills at telling what kind of person someone is from a distance. Well, that and the fact that he knew full well that plenty of lower class citizens weren't the best fed of folk. "Great! Shall we?" He gestured dramatically in the direction of the transit station, like some old-timey butler or one of the glamorous women who showed off appliances on game shows, and then turned to cross back over the street. The closest route to them thankfully also ran fairly close to the taco place. It was one of those places that was earthy and cluttered in an intentional, artsy kind of way, warm colored terracotta tiles, decorations in rich blues, oranges, and golds, and real wood furnishings. Also, with how late in the afternoon it was, the place was likely to be quiet after the lunch rush, but Rick sent a quick message from his watch as he and Tai walked, letting them know he was coming and would need one of the back rooms. The host greeted him as they walked in, giving Tai a bit of a funny look, but the two of them are brought to one of the back rooms and sat without any questioning. Had a middle class person come in with someone so obviously lower class, they might have faced more complications, but Rick's got enough money that most people leave him alone. "The chicken's my favorite, but their guac, oh my god, it is to die for. Okay, maybe not to die for but like, I would probably, I dunno, take a bullet for it? Get punched really hard in the face? Whatever, you get the point. Guacamole. Delicious." There's more business talk to be had, probably, but Rick would be content to just eat; even being second in command at Archangel was a stressful existence, and just having some time to sit and not have to be working on anything was a blessing. Most days, Rick didn't have time to eat lunch at all, much less leave the office, and if he did make an exception, he was likely still on the clock, meeting with some contact or another. Technically, Tai should've been no different, but he didn't seem to mind when Rick was just himself, bad jokes and theatrical tendencies included. That, or he did mind and was interested enough in the money to put it aside. Whatever.

Tai jammed his hands in his pockets as he and Richard walked down the streets into the restaurant that Richard had chosen, trying not to tense up. While he didn't think that this was some very elaborate set-up, he still couldn't help but feel uneasy. This was very much not the sort of place he was used to or supposed to be in and he knew he was getting funny looks, the very obviously Lower Class guy walking around.
The restaurant was nice, Tai guessed, judging from its location and the decoration, although Tai honestly had no idea. The colors were soothing though, compared with the dull greys of the Lower Class and Slums areas he was used to. He couldn't help but want to nick a few pieces of silverware or something. Maybe something made real wood, that'd be bound to get a good price. If he hadn't been there with Richard, he probably would have.
As it was, he tried to focus on what Richard was saying, although it sounded like he was simply rambling about the food here. Something called 'guac?' Should he ask? Would that make Richard realise that Tai had no idea what he was doing? Fuck it, judging from all the bad jokes Richard kept making, Tai figured he could write it off as a bad joke on his part if things looked too bad.
“What's 'guac?'”

Rick gave the menu a cursory once over, not really reading it; he already knew what he wanted, anyway. He's pulled out of his slightly spacey state of mind when Tai asks him what guac is. "Are you... are you messing with me? Or do you genuinely not know what guacamole is? It's just mashed up avocados with like, spices? And onions? And like, tomatoes and stuff? No?" It seemed utterly ridiculous that Tai just straight up didn't know what an avocado was, but maybe, since he'd grown up in the slums...? "Tai. Do you know what an avocado is?" Maybe he could get someone from the kitchen to bring out an avocado to them? Rick knew that some places did tableside food, and if Tai honestly was unfamiliar with avocados as a concept, it was worth any extra expense. Any thoughts of the impending assassination of his boss flew out of his head; suddenly, the most important thing to him was educating this lower class thug in the wonders of vegetables. Or was it a fruit? Legume? Rick wasn't sure, but that didn't matter.

Tai listened to Richard attempt to explain whatever the hell 'guac' was with growing suspicion. There was no way there was a food like that. And what the hell was an avocado? It sounded either fake or utterly disgusting or both, to be perfectly honest. Not that Tai was going to say that and risk alienating Richard. Especially not in someplace as fancy as this; any argument or even general sign of disagreement in Richard, and Tai knew there'd be police on him faster than he could blink. Better to tread carefully.
Tai shrugged to hide his embarrassment at not knowing something Richard obviously thought was commonplace. And to keep his mind off the fact that he'd still not told Richard the fact that he wasn't actually an assassin. That fact kept writhing around his head, along with he idea that if he told Richard, Richard would instantly leave. For some reason, Tai didn't want that; Richard was funny and had gorgeous eyes and was giving Tai food. And was going to pay Tai to kill a man.
He could do this. Probably.

Tai was keeping quiet, shrugging instead of commenting, and Rick tried not to laugh; it was endearing, really, the way that he was trying to save face. Normally, he would've filed this kind of faux pas away for use as later blackmail. Anyone could be an enemy, anyone could be a target, no matter how close to Rick they had seemed or how good of people. The fact that he was here, plotting to kill his boss, former mentor, former best friend, was proof of that. There were a few problems with that in this situation; Tai wasn't important enough to have people interested in destroying him, at least not in the way Rick specialized in, not to mention that 'does not know what an avocado is' is not a particularly interesting flaw. He grinned at Tai, flagging down a passing waiter. "Scuse me, could we get, well, basically guacamole, but not assembled? Like, full size avocados, knife, fork, tomatoes, whatever." He turned from the waiter and back to the man sat across from him. "So. While we wait for them to stop being confused by that, how 'bout I run you through what I need done, we see what we can do, yeah?" Rick folded his arms, leaned forward across the table. With the close proximity and the dim, warm light in the room, Rick wondered if they looked like they were on a date. He found he didn't mind giving off that impression to the waitstaff, and then found himself concerned with his lack of worry about the misconception. Pushing the thought down, he continued. "My boss, Dan Harvard, is, uh," ,he paused to glance down at the table and laugh to himself, "he's a piece of shit. Really. Not just saying that to make myself and, by extension, you feel better. He's also in my way. None of this really matters as far as you're concerned; what should matter is that I'm the guy with the money, the plan, and the guns to execute that plan. All you need to do is follow instructions- go to the right places at the right times, shoot the right bullets at the right times, and then run like hell- and you're home free, and quite a bit richer. I've got- oh, good, you're back!" He cut himself off as the waiter returned, looking slightly confused, but holding a plate with several avocados, a knife, a ceramic bowl with tasteful paint around the rim, a fork, and two smaller glass bowls, one holding chopped tomatoes, the other with chopped onions. "Let's have some fun, yeah? I'll finish getting you the plans after lunch."

Tai watched Rick flag down the waiter and order avocados, whatever those even were, along with a bowl and tomatoes? What was going on? Whatever, it's not like it was important in the long run. What was important was that Rick was about to start actually talking business.
Tai listened to Rick tell him the basics of the job, the sense of worry that had been riding around his stomach resolving into something akin to cool purpose. He could do this. Richard had a plan, so Tai didn't need to worry about coming up with one himself. It was either a very elaborate setup or it wasn't, and Tai highly doubted that there'd be a setup this elaborate to catch someone as unimportant as the simple thug that he was. Tai calmed down and relaxed, his feelings of worry and confusion finally beginning to dissipate. At least until the waiter came back.
The waiter came back with a plate of rocks? And a bowl of what was obviously chopped onions and another that was probably chopped tomatoes. So were the rocks what Richard called avocados?
Tai couldn't help the hand that came out and grabbed one of the rocks, brings it closer to his face to examine it. It was dark green, pear shaped, and kinda squishy. Other than that Tai had no idea. “Is this an avocado?”

Rick had to bite back a smile as Tai picked up one of the avocados, holding it close to his face and squinting at it suspiciously. "No, it's actually a top secret grenade prototype." He chuckled to himself as he picked up another one, cutting into the soft flesh with one of the knives. He held it out to Tai once it was open, letting him see the paler green flesh inside. "See? Avocado. The fruit- or is it a vegetable? Legume? What the hell are they, anyway? Well, the point is, they're the food of the gods." He set the knife down halfway between himself and Tai, so that the other man could use it for some investigation of his own if he wanted, and started scooping out half of the one he held in his hands. He didn't want to make Tai uncomfortable; the man seemed pretty clearly uncomfortable with his lack of avocado expertise, and besides, Rick had the very important process of guacamole making to undertake.

For a minute, Tai thought Richard was serious about the grenade prototype thing. Until Richard took one and cut it open, revealing a lighter green flesh on the inside. So it was some sort of fruit or something. Not that it actually mattered, but that was at least one thing solved. Tai shrugged again and put the avocado back on the plate.
Tai watched as Richard put the knife down between the two of them, trying to gauge his intentions. No one from the Slums would ever willingly leave a weapon where someone they barely knew could easily grab it. But then again, they were hardly in the Slums right now, and it wasn't like Richard would have the same reactions that he would. And Richard was very busily mashing the avocado he'd scooped out with the fork the waiter provided, so it didn't look like he'd noticed the flicker of surprise that had crossed Tai's face when he'd placed the knife on the table.
But the presence of the knife changed things, gave Tai a way out that he really hoped he wouldn't have to take. He picked it up and twirled it in his hands, trying to appear casual. The waiter was nowhere near them, so now was as good a time as any to tell Richard.
“I'm not a hitman,” he said. There, short and simple. Then on a whim, the same sort that had led him to this restaurant in the first place, “but I can be.”

Rick tried to not stare as Tai twirled the knife between his fingers; he really, really needed to focus right now, and a reminder of how dangerous this man should have been getting him back on track, not making him want to derail even more. Tai's next words got his mind back together instantly- he'd almost wandered too far into thinking of this as some bizarre kind of first date, rather than a very dangerous, very illegal business arrangement. With a man who wasn't actually a hitman. Great. Careful not to let himself look thrown off by this admission, Rick folded his hands on the table and gave Tai his most winning interviewer smile. "Well, as long as the job gets done, you could be a gardener or matchmaker as far as I care." He regarded the table thoughtfully for a moment, then looked up again. "That might actually be better, now that I think about it. Easier to pass blame onto someone else."

Tai immediately felt some of the tension in his shoulders leak out when Richard simply smiled at him as Tai told him the truth. He very nearly fumbled the knife in his hands, only barely keeping it from slipping out of his grasp as an odd sense of relief sank in. Richard wasn't angry at him for concealing this very important fact. Or at least, wasn't showing it outwardly.
Instead, Richard took Tai's admission well. Almost too well, if Tai was going to be completely honest with himself. But it was intriguing, rather than disconcerting, how easily Richard was able come up with a positive spin on things. And not just pointless positivity, but an actual good point. Tai was all in favour of not being caught and did not mind the idea of pinning the blame on someone else.
“Well, Richard, how do we wanna do this?”
With one final spin to the knife, Tai flipped it into the air and caught it by the blade as it fell, placing it back down on the table between him and Richard.
