Atticus was born into the middle class and became quick friends with another boy, Kyne. They remained friends all through schooling and were eventually separated at least slightly when Attie tested and scored for High Class, with Kyne moving to Lower.

Atticus came to Novus with his mother when he was 12 years old, as displaced runaways from mafia and underworld turmoil in a primarily French speaking city far away. Novus was the best bet for them - not too far away that travel was risky but... far enough that they'd be safe. Neither he nor his mother spoke much English, but Atticus was young and managed to catch on. His mother had much more difficulty, but with her son's help managed to catch on and secure a proper citizenship in the Middle class.
During school, he became quick friends with Kyne, who he remained close with even after the two became separated by class, with Kyne moving to Lower and Attie moving to Upper.

Though he speaks both languages fluently, he has retained a not strong but definitely there accent that clearly identifies him as someone from another city. This can be both a good thing and a bad thing, as it only makes him stand out. [[Note, for readers reference this is a French Canadian accent ]]
