Rumours have begun spreading throughout Novus of attacks on citizens in the night. Supposed victims from all classes have claimed many different forms for their attackers, but the general consensus is that the aggressors seem to be some kind of shadowy looking beasts. However, these reports are dubious in nature, as none of of the so called victims have been able to show us any proof of their attacks, though all claimed to have suffered wounds. Additionally, those claiming to be victims have also reported that they have heard their supposed assailants after the initial attack, citing that footsteps and other strange noises have been plaguing them regularly. These attacks have yet to receive any coverage from Novus News Network or any government sanctioned news network. Although the credibility of these reports is still unconfirmed, it is still recommended that our readers exercise caution at night if alone.

Hello everyone, and welcome to our newest event 'Outbreak'. For the next two months, Novus will experience a new series of events never before felt that will shake the city down to its very core. We will be giving you updates on the plot through this thread over the course of the event, letting you know how its different elements are progressing and what your characters will have the chance to experience or encounter. 'Novus Underground News' is one new addition for this event. As an unofficial 'off the grid' rumor and news network run by the citizens of Novus, they give a more personal insight into the happenings around the city. People from all walks of life have access to these forums and are welcome to post their own experiences with the different happenings as the news rolls in. While anyone is welcome to post and interact with the members in an anonymous fashion, everyone does have access to this board - meaning it's not a place for secure information and exchange for plans that need discretion (ex. vigilante uprisings, police raids, etc.). For the moment, nothing official has been released by the 'Novus News Network', which is the official source of IC information for characters across the city. This thread is the pure IC version of the 'Novus Underground News' and characters are allowed ( and encouraged! ) to comment on what is happening in their own RPs and encounters to move things along and share their experiences in this event over the next two months.
Important Information ! ──────────── Possible events your character may encounter at this point: Shadowy, indistinct beasts that attack and cause pain, but leave no marks. They only attack at night, forewarned by soft static and beast-like noises. After seeing one of the creatures, whether attacked or not, your character may continue to hear these noises during the night. IMPORTANT NOTES: Associating with those who have been attacked will increase the chances of being attacked yourself. However, Scavengers have mysteriously not had any encounters with these beings, though some have reported non-Scavenger friends acting strangely in their presence, as if they were being hunted. |

Attention citizens!
It has come to our attention that some attacks have been occurring at night around the city. We suspect this to be the work of Vigilantes, but assure you the Common and Secret Police are working to fix the problem. We advise some caution at night, but assure our viewers chances of being attacked are unlikely.
Returning to one of our earlier stories this week, reports of the shadowy attackers have been escalating. The Novus News Network has officially acknowledged the attacks, but gives little details and blames them on Vigilantes. While this seems unlikely, the lack of evidence supporting either side has lead to many theories. As reports start to come in, victims have begun to show up sporting actual wounds from these creatures. Victim accounts have been varied, with some claiming they were attacked by animal like creatures while others cite more humanesque shapes. A small percentage have claimed to not even remember being attacked and only noticing their wounds at a later date. So far recorded wounds have ranged from what appears to be scratch marks to bullet wounds to burn marks. Please note these are our best guesses, as the range of injuries makes it hard to tell what exactly inflicted them.
However, we do strongly urge our readers to stay and travel in groups until this is sorted out. Several victims have claimed that they were attacked inside their own homes, despite having security measures in place. These reports should be taken with a grain of salt, as many came in with what seemed to be an unreliable memory of the experience. But still, we encourage you all to remain safe until our next update.

This event is running in real time, so as of now the attacks have been going on for five days. With the Novus News Network reporting on the incidents, concern would have begun to grip many of the populus of Novus. Blame has officially been cast onto vigilantes, though doubt and confusion continue to be prevalent. More patrols from the Common Police and the Secret Police would be sent out to try and contain the situation before any sort of altercations could escalated further than what has already occurred. Citizens attacked have mentioned their assailants taking on humanoid forms on occasion, as well as having gaps in their memory both before and after being attacked. Wounds have begun to appear on attacked citizens, although some attacks still only leave a sense of pain. These attacks have also happened in citizen's homes, even with security in place. The potential of being attacked while working at night in a secure building is also possible.
Important Information ! ──────────── Characters now have the potential to encounter / receive: Physical wounds ( such as bites, burns, gunshots, etc ). The attacking creatures can take on a humanoid shape in addition to their beastlike one. Some people attacked may experience blanks in memory, even after the initial attack. Attacks have been occurring in seemingly secure locations with no regards to security systems. Attacks continue to only happen at night. As more layers are added onto the plot, feel free to RP whichever stage you want! The outbreak of attacks throughout the city the past week has continued with increasing intensity, with reports coming in of assaults at all hours of the day, regardless of location. Victims have been appearing in increasingly muddled states, citing massive memory blanks.
The source of these attacks are still unknown, but we recommend all readers carry some means of self-defense on them at all times. Although we are unsure why, magic users have been the most largely targeted demographic and so we advise caution in using magic until the attacks have stopped.

Little time has passed since the last report on the current events of Novus. More people have been drawn into the tense situation, with the daytime hours no longer being safe. Attacks seem to be more closely related to magic use, as those who use it are targeted more often. This has included Scavengers who use magic, who were excluded from the attacks previously. However, even without magic use, citizens still have a chance of being targeted and pulled into violence. Citizens would have begun to notice an increase in memory lapses, the span of which could last from a few minutes to potentially hours. The source of these is still connected to the attacks, although victims may experience memory blanks an extended amount of time after encountering a creature.
Important Information ! ──────────── Characters now have the potential to encounter / receive: Attacks during the daytime, as well as night. Memory blanks coming more frequently, and not always associated with a recent attack. All magic users are also now affected ( meaning those with intact NUIPs as well as scavengers ), their encounter rate rising from recent or heavy magic use. In addition to these, the previous physical wounds, humanoid and beast-like attackers, and attacks indoors continue to occur. As with the previous update, feel free to RP whichever stage you want!  URGENT REPORT.
Instances of violence have been on the rise the past week, with many citizens suffering wounds and regular symptoms. These symptoms include: magic backfiring on its users, large gaps in memory, and various motor and sensory problems arising at unforeseeable intervals.
However, we ensure the citizens of Novus that there is no reason to panic, as your government is already working on a solution to these issues. The Secret Police's Research Division has confirmed that these attacks and reports of creatures are in fact caused by a virus contained within the NUIP System. While it is currently unknown how this virus made its way into the network, engineers are working around the clock to correct this issue and return our city to its normalcy.
As many citizens are unable to currently differentiate between hallucinations and actual threats and may act out violently towards others, all citizens are advised to remain indoors until this issue is fixed. No long-term adverse effects have been noted while analyzing the virus, though citizens are encouraged to abstain from magic use for the time being, as well as excessive use of the NUIP systems.
We assure you that this issue will be fixed shortly, and that there is no serious danger to your health so long as you follow the guidelines given above. Updates will be given regularly on the situation.
Well, readers, it seems we finally have our answers for what has been causing these mysterious attacks in the dark.
Confirmation has been given (although given its the NNN, perhaps it should be taken with a grain of salt) that the recent attacks have been caused by a virus spreading in the NUIP system. We can only speculate that while these hallucinations started entirely in the mind, the wounds suffered by individuals must have been caused by citizens of Novus attacking each other while hallucinating.
While we are uncertain if there is anyway to cure the current infection, we encourage everyone to reduce their usage of the NUIP System and its various networks until a solution (official or otherwise) is found. All symptoms seem to increase with heavy usage of the NUIP, especially when involving magic. Those presumed to be infected have also seen magic backfiring on them when attempting to use it, so please exercise caution.
Combined with the hallucinations, memory blanks have become much more widespread. As we cannot say what occurs during these blanks for citizens, we encourage you to remain some place secure or find a trusted friend to keep watch with you in the case that either are infected. Additionally, reports of citizens having major issues with sight and hearing due to the virus have been confirmed. Loss or distortion of vision and sound has become common, so we urge you to refrain from any strenuous activities until this subsides. If you have other means to access the internet or our posts that don't use the NUIP, please make use of those.
Since the confirmation of this phenomenon as a virus, groups of people both inside and outside the government have been working to find a cure. The attacks have been confirmed as a digital virus that has infected the NUIP system of almost everyone in the city of Novus. Monetary transactions, internet use, phone calls, or even information tracking through the NUIP causes spikes in the severity of symptoms along with magic use. Hallucinations continue to plague many citizens of Novus, though it's nearly impossible to tell if what they're seeing is simply a shadow - or a person taking the shape of a monster. Because of this citizens have been urged to remain indoors while the threat of violence continues to grow. While Scavengers are less affected than others, they still suffer from the negatives and hold the potential for hallucinations, loss of motor and sensory control, as well as phantom pain if they have used magic since the outbreak of the virus.

URGENT CITYWIDE ALERT. In order to remove this virus from the NUIP system of the citizens, the Executive Class has made the decision to temporarily shut down the NUIP network and all of its functions. We assure all citizens this is only a temporary measure, and the systems will be up and running again soon. It is strongly suggested that all citizens remain in their home unless it is absolutely necessary to go outside for supplies or safety reasons. The Common Police and Secret Police have strengthened their numbers in the city to ensure your safety during this outage. Again, all citizens are encouraged to remain in their homes until the NUIP network is up and running again.

In an effort to reboot the system and get the virus out, the Executive Class of Novus has opted to turn off the NUIP Network all across Novus. This means that any functions related to NUIP are currently unavailable to your character, including money ( unless it was on a chip at the time of system shutdown ), all identity information, the Secret Police’s audio and location tracker, and many other functions. Magic can still be used. If you have any questions about what does/doesn’t work, feel free to pm the admins or ask publicly in the Q&A section. How long this shutdown of the NUIP systems will last is currently unknown. Members of the Common Police and Secret Police are out in full force patrols to control any possible threats that might arise from the shutdown. While hallucinations have stopped completely, some citizens may still be experiencing the other symptoms of the virus still. At the moment, the streets are mostly quiet with the exception of the police patrols. Security between many of the classes is down, but the Executive Class has higher security than ever. No major disrest has been reported yet.
Important Information ! ──────────── The NUIP Shutdown involves the following: No access to currency, unless previously placed onto a physical chip. Security, cell phones, messaging systems, and anything else needing NUIP control are no longer functioning. Magic is still in effect, however backfires continue to be possible. Memory blanks, dulled senses, and issues with motor and/or speech controls continue to persist - though at a lesser degree. Hallucinations have stopped. |

URGENT CITYWIDE ALERT. The NUIP system is still offline as of now. In its absence, some citizens from the lower classes have society have begun rioting and attempting to take advantage of the temporary shutdown. The Common Police and Secret Police are controlling the situation, but citizens are advised to stay indoors to avoid this violence. Participation in these riots will not be tolerated, and anyone caught will have it placed on their record upon the reactivation of the NUIP Network. Remember, in order to avoid this violence or being mistaken for a rioter, we encourage all citizens to remain in their homes until the NUIP network is functioning again.

With the shutdown of the NUIP system, the citizens have been thrust into a state of anarchy. With the NUIP system still offline, many areas of society are facing major unrest without their usual regulations. As a result of this unease and lowered security, riots have broken out across the city. What started as a few scattered breaking and entering instances has turned into full blown violence in what used to be peaceful areas. Citizens from all classes have begun to scramble for food, material goods, and anything else they could possibly get their hands on. The Police have been equipped with riot gear, but the sheer number of citizens compared to them have dwarfed their efforts to maintain control over the general populus. Secret Police members are taking down any ringleaders they can find, and it is suspected Vigilante groups will be attempting to take advantage of the chaos soon as well. At the moment, it's still unknown when the NUIP system will be back online, and what effects the shutdown will have on the system as a whole. Citizens have been advised to stay indoors to maintain their own safety from the erupting violence around the city.
Important Information ! ──────────── Characters continue to experience random memory blackouts and magic backfire while the system remains down.The report coming in from NNN has been very skewed towards painting the situation being under control, but that's not the case. While the government attempts to maintain some semblance of control and blames the riots on citizens from the slums and lower class, violence persistents among all classes. |
