"Why thank you ever so much," Lyante giggled from the kitchen. She knew she shouldn', but really, there were other ways of coping with the situation. She wondered if Elgen had some form of claustrophobia, but decided against it; he seemed calm enough. At any rate, the water started boiling and Lyante made a kettle of tea, including an extra cup on the tray as she walked back into the area where Elgen was sulking.
Stopping briefly by the door, she decided to take another drink with her, just in case ELgen wasn't the tea drinking kind. She bit her cheeks when she entered the room, desperately trying not to laugh as he was sulking in a chair. Lyante wasn't one for schadenfreude, but this was the most hilarious thing she had ever seen. Sitting on her bed and sipping tea, she picked up the manga he had knocked out of her hand and started reading, a blush on her face as she followed manga-Elgen on his quest as she tried to find other colleaugues to fill the roles of the other guys in the manga. Squinting, she kinda could make the love interest look like Sven, which made her giggle out loud.
Eventually she sighed and parked herself next to Elgen.
"Look, we might as well try and crack this case, right? Cause now we're just wasting time." Without waiting for his answer, she flipped the screens on and code and sumamries came up, showing all of Lyante's work on the case.
"I'm strategically running all interactive data into an extra NUIP inside my little blob there. If we can pinpoint what makes people freak out, we can think up a cure, right? Come on, let's work together."
She flashed ELgen her most charming smile, hoping he could at least be helpful.

Elgen refused to acknowledge her. He knew all too well what her aim was. She’d been the one to trap him here by begin vague and annoying, so of course Lyante was going to relish in the fact she had full reign to pester him for the next 24 hours. And a sweet 24 hours it’d be— for her, anyway. Something inside of his head suspected this had all been planned. And who at HQ would stop her? Certainly not his colleagues. Maybe the higher ups, but they had better things to do besides pay attention to the whims of one “unique” employee. He supposed that despite her many, many bad points, Lyante was good with her role in the Secret Police... whatever it was. Elgen never bothered to pry into it because he never needed her for anything.
Perhaps now was the time to rectify that. After all, he wasn’t able to do much else. Elgen could be nice for once and if he was lucky, coax his way out of this box. But his stubbornness wouldn’t let him do it. No way. Any sense of professionalism went out the window as soon as that damn woman had opened the door and allowed him to step inside, knowing fully well that there wasn’t an exit.
He pretended to ignore her presence once the tray of tea was placed next to him. The man had to admit the aroma wafting from the cup smelled rather nice. But no. If he drank it, he’d surely be knocked out, or he’d explode or something. Instead, Elgen fiddled around with Edinburgh, polishing out smudges with the sleeve of his gloves.
”Yeah, you’re wasting time. You’re wasting my time,” he answered. Dammit, he wasn’t supposed to be saying anything to her. ”I could’ve been at my office by now, putting together my reports instead of sitting on my ass and watching you read Japanese porn books.”
Elgen’s eye was caught by the display of text she’d summoned, and he became genuinely distracted by what he saw. ”Wait, where’d you get this information?”
He went from sulking in the corner to combing through the data, flipping from page to page in awe. The man was actually impressed, though not without a side of irritated. If Lyante had this much to contribute towards these shadow attacks, then where had it been the whole time? ”I haven’t seen anything like this in the HQ database. I’ve poured through it a few times already trying to find connections… Why the hell isn’t any of this accessible?”

Lyante took the time to pour herself a new cup of tea, meticulously adding sugar and milk and stirring lazily before answering Elgen: "I'm wasting your time," the statement was dripping with sarcasm as she gave Elgen a meaningful look, "I'm not the one sulking and having a private drama filled soap opera moment with mr. Door. Besides, we both know you'd do anything to not be stuck at your desk and filling out or filing reports. As for my literature...you could say they are a - ah - specialized niche, but so what? It's not like I can make the programs run faster by sitting here in the chair."
Lyante wanted to continue, but it seemed Elgen got distracted by the data on the screens. Apparently realizing what was flashing on the screen, his surliness apparently disappeared as he remarks the HQ database did not possess this data. Immediately his surliness returnedas he seemingly accused Lyante of holding back data.
"I told you, I'm analysing this by running the most common interactions through a fake NUIP in my little blob there."
She pointed in the corner and there, in a plexiglass cage was a small translucent goo with a NUIP chip inside, wires running to and from it as it jiggled every time now data was exchanged.
Besides, doesn't anyone read physical notes on their desk anymore? I figured the NUIP system might be comprimised so I tried off line communication. Someone was supposed to come pick this up, or check if I had found anything. You guys only missed the first deadline by 3 days."
She shifted in the chair with a slight accusing air, but soon changed that to a more cooperative one. "So what have you tried? So far I haven't been able to really infect the test blob, but there's some weird stuff going on with the system. Have we caught an infected person yet?"

He didn’t want to dignify any of this with a response. Even if it was Lyante of all people, Elgen knew she was still Secret Police. Sometimes, manipulation of all kinds was necessary to the job, and her little mocking commentary was just a part of that. He wouldn’t fall for the same techniques he’d employed on people so many time in the past— people, by the way, that were lesser men than he.
But she was right about one thing: even this whole situation was preferable to the mounds of paper work awaiting him back at his desk.
For now, it was best to focus on the data as Elgen pulled out his recorder and began typing up an email. HQ probably wouldn’t like to hear he’d be out of the action the rest of the day, but that was their fault for making him be Lyante’s keeper.
”Not even an email? Really?” he scoffed. ”I’ll give you that we're being super careful with everything because of the attacks, but there’s multiple other avenues. Our servers are untouchable. A few attachments should’ve been simple. Hell, even a phone call through an untraceable number or something.”
One of these days, the man swore he was going to blow a gasket, and Lyante would be on the receiving end. Not like it was too late for that, considering 23 hours remained on the countdown.
”And if by tried, you mean me, then I haven’t done any experiments on anything or anyone. That’s not my gig. I’ve been interviewing people for days now, trying to get firsthand accounts. They’re not reliable by any means, but there still might be a connection between them. Usually, there’s recurring testimony for something this widespread. And I’d consider all of them to be 'infected'. But no, since you’ve been hiding out in your cave, we haven’t kept anyone in headquarters or whatever for testing.
”What’re you even infecting the NUIP with anyway? As far as we know, everything’s been physical, unless you have some other theory I’m sure you’ll tell me about. Messing around with viruses is a little legally iffy, even for you.”

Lyante liked the tonal shift in Elgen, from defiant to at least a bit cooperative. She shook her head at his comments:
"I don't know what is infecting everyone, so no, no emails. And I'm not gonna infect it myself, I got the little blob there connected to the net, signed him up for about every forum on it and I'm making it visit very questionable sites in order to get it infected, giving us some kind of clue as to the origin of the virus...if it is one. I must admit this is the only explanation I could think of."
She yawned, running through new sections of data as she stretched herself out and leaned back, putting her feet on the edge of the desk. "I've been playing the waiting game to find an infection without even knowing that is what is causing all this madness. It is the most logic conclusion, but you never know..."
Lyante went through another section silently as she seemed to hesitate and suddenly turned towards Elgen. "So, Elgen, s-ince we're trapped here for a while still...I gotta ask, did they really not see the message or d-did they just not want to talk to me?"
Her pose and facial expression gave a nonchalant impression, but her eyes seemed a bit worried, like she already knew the answer.
