It wasn't too hard to act like he was enjoying himself and relaxing, but that was only because it wasn't really an act. The only extra effort on his part in that matter was actually allowing himself to relax, telling himself it was all part of the plan to let the often cold and detached tendencies slip away for a little while. Ren was definitely doing a good job of helping with that, and even though logically he could tell himself that the man's words were just being used to relax him, get him talking - they still had an effect because of the way he said them.
Matiko's sleeves were pulled off, Ren's hands resting on his arms, so warm - he, he definitely wanted things to keep going but didn't quite know what to answer and didn't want to stall awkwardly. At the very least, it wasn't like it was going to take any pretending to let Ren know what he wanted; all it was going to take was the constant internal reminder that no, this was fine, letting himself relax was fine.
"Mmm I am, yes. I shouldn't, but..." he mulled quietly to stall for time. Ren... really was something to look at, Mat had to admit. The soft glow reached not just the markings on his face but into his eyes, bright violet fragments picking up all of the light. Matiko reached up, hand brushing back a few strands of hair from Ren's face, and finished, "Nice to have someone want to listen, just to help."
Never mind that he still had to think of what he was going to say, but he didn't think he'd overplayed the hesitance just yet. Had he? He couldn't have, but he was more worried about coming off as over eager. Either way, his hand moved to curl around behind Ren's neck, to pull him slightly towards himself in a fairly obvious 'kiss me more'. If he could clear his head enough, he could maybe come up with some false information to give. Right now, though, it seemed like that was difficult. Ren was so warm under his hands, so close to him, and he hadn't thought it would feel this nice and they hadn't even really... done much.

His words and actions were definitely having an effect. Taren kept a patient smile on his face with half-lidded eyes, gently running his hands up and down the other man's arms. For what anyone could read from him, he definitely gave off every visual cue of someone genuinely interested in helping Mat unwind. That was only part of the truth, though, because he absolutely just wanted the part where the Upper Class revealed any convenient information.
This was why, when the next words left Mat's lips, trailing off into uncertainty and resuming - still - without anything noteworthy, his portrayed patience started to wear a little thin. He masked it rather quickly by closing his eyes, bringing a hand up to catch the other man's hand to trail kisses along his fingers.
"As long as you're here, you have my undivided attention, Mat," he offered quietly, slowly opening his eyes just slightly again to find golds. Taren's other hand moved to toy with the zipper of Mat's red coat, not just yet opening it. "You can tell me anything, don't be shy. Even if you're just frustrated about something your friends may have done." Carefully, he lowered the other's hand, moving to unzip the next layer of clothing ... only to find another shirt underneath that.Really? Another layer? It took everything in Taren not to just laugh in exasperation. He focused on getting it off of the other man instead, still all smiles and bedroom eyes. "If I can't make you feel completely relaxed, then I'm not doing my job properly, and that's just unacceptable."

Despite the attempt, it looked like Ren had other intentions. He intercepted Matiko's hand, instead bringing it to his lips before he said he would give Mat his undivided attention. Pushing for something, it looked like - which honestly meant that the stalling was to come to an end. Well. Okay. He had this. He had this.
"I'm not going to get in the way of you doing your job," he offered, allowing his coat to be pulled off. Ren seemed intent on getting it all off of him now, though, and the fewer layers of clothing difference made little difference in feeling the heat coming off of the other man's body. Matiko was more than eager enough to comply; he knew he should give a real answer now, though, and with Ren's insistence of letting him vent whatever he was frustrated about. Well. Maybe he could tell some... half truths. Those were easy, especially for someone unoriginal like he was. "I... look for people. People who don't want to be found. Lots to worry about; what they could do if I don't find them, who they could hurt..."
There was a soft hum of a sigh riding on his breath, possibly sounding troubled though the trouble was more that this was difficult to deal with; his own hands wanted to move onto Ren's body again, he wanted to remove his clothes too, he didn't even know what he was doing specifically, but he wanted and that was enough to drive him to move. Maybe lowering his defenses enough to relax had been a bad idea, maybe he shouldn't have done it because it was definitely harder than usual to come up with things to say but it really did seem like Ren was digging a bit now, and wasn't that what he had come here for? It was, but Matiko was... Matiko; he had to see all of what was to be seen here, to get all the information he could and do the job completely.

Aha. There was a glimmer of hope. If he wouldn't get in the way of Taren doing his job, that meant he was finally going to say something, right? Carefully discarding the coat onto the floor (it was another skill entirely to drop something in a way that wouldn't damage the more delicate, expensive materials he'd come across), he sat a bit more upright and gave a more "cheerful" smile. Yes, say something.
When he finally got words out, it was plenty of information, honestly. Taren put on his best look of concern after the words left Mat's lips. "That does sound incredibly stressful. You haven't gotten hurt too badly in your endeavors, have you?" he asked, immediately lowering himself against the other man again, one hand finding pale blue hair and the other moving down to the edge of Mat's shirt. It was an innocent question -- but knowing of severe injuries meant knowledge of someone's potential Achilles heel.
Taren didn't stop there, though. Mat had thrown him a bone ( or two? <; ) so he wanted to reward his guest. Leaning down, he brushed his lips across the other man's jaw, stopping when he ended up with lips just barely touching the other's. Not a kiss, just enough room to speak -- or not speak. "If anything, I know at least I feel a little safer, knowing someone like you is in a position like that." More sprinkles on top, really, to sell himself as harmless. Appearances were very important.

Ren didn't take long after discarding Mat's red coat to bring back the proximity, leaning down close again and asking if he'd ever been hurt. It... well, if he was digging for information it seemed a lot less innocent than it could have been. Something to wonder about, though not something he would tell the truth about even if he didn't suspect ulterior motives. Matiko felt a little lucky that this wasn't the hardest thing to respond to, though, even if Ren himself still held his attention quite firmly.
"....no," he answered after only a moment. A lie, but not a hard one to do considering the faults he liked to cover up. Of course he had been injured, it was dangerous work and while he was certainly skilled, he hadn't always been; there had been mistakes, miscalculations... none of it showed thanks to the access high quality medical care for said mistakes, but he still bore the lessons learned from them. But on that he added, "I'm the one that others need to be worrying about."
Which might have sounded stupid, if you weren't Matiko, but he wasn't really once to be anything but arrogant unless he had to be. He was very aware of how quickly his thoughts left him, though, once Ren had closed some of the gap. Lips on skin again, but he paused before a kiss - a kiss that Mat would have been unwilling to admit that he really actually wanted now. Instead, more words - he felt obligated to answer them.
"Must be doing my job right, then," he breathed in reply, knowing that stalling for time was what was going to get his job done and trying to ignore the growing want for Ren to actually keep going, to find out just how much he was going to enjoy this. Just acknowledging the thought flustered him, even if it was only enough to try and push it away.

I'm the one that others need to be worrying about. Oh good god, Taren had to keep himself on track so he wouldn't start snickering. Those were the type of words everyone in the Slums expected out of higher class citizens -- or, more specifically, what people like him came to expect from figures of authority. He saved the words in the back of his mind for later, right along with the "no" bad injuries, because this guest was clearly worth something. All the more reason to turn him into a regular ~*
The other reply was right against his lips, though, tickling and drawing a soft chuckle from Taren. "I'd think so, Mat," he murmured, before briefly considering the time. How long did the Magix have before it wore off? Ten minutes total, right? If he wanted to avoid another stick too quickly, he should really step up his game. And that meant a little less talking overall. Information could be gathered in slow unsuspicious bursts.
"Bad guys definitely need to be scared of you... You're clearly very strong. Especially if those arms are any indication -- arms I wouldn't mind around me," he breathed, very much trying to play up the whole escort angle again. Briefly flicking his gaze toward golds, he wasted no time as he closed the fraction of a distance with a heated kiss -- one hand gripping tight in Mat's hair as the other slid under his shirt, warmed fingers right against the other man's stomach. It was the sort of kiss that even made him a little dizzy and drunk on the moment, but it had never been too hard to regain his composure in the past. No harm there.

For a moment he was completely distracted, moving into the kiss and pulling Ren nearer - it definitely wasn't the words doing it, though. He'd almost not really heard them after lips met, more focused on that, more focused on the way Ren's touch was unbelievably warm. It was such a good feeling, overwhelmingly so; he was unused to it and already he was greedy for it. Despite that, he was still too unsure of how exactly to have things move forwards, how to say what he wanted - - that in itself was frustrating, but it wasn't exactly taking away from all of the good.
He knew, though - he had to keep some sort of focus on what he was doing. Maybe Ren would bring up something more, maybe he'd need to be prompted, but he at least had an idea that it seemed like the man was digging for something. It wasn't very obvious- if he hadn't been looking for it, sent in to bait it, he definitely would have been too inept to notice but he had been told what to look for in this instance.
It was sort of embarrassing how much he felt himself giving in to the feeling of warmth, of someone else so close - he hadn't thought he would, that it would have been difficult and awkward but maybe it was just that Mat wasn't the only one good at his job, that somehow he actually was kind of relaxed beneath the flustered hesitation to his thoughts about actions. Words were even more awkward to think about but he tossed the idea of that aside for now, not sure if he really could make an answer from what Ren had said. He'd.... he'd work with whatever else he was given, he supposed; it was far too difficult for him to try and get very far with just talking when his thoughts, despite his better wishes, were being drawn elsewhere.

Even though he was playing up his role, Taren had to admit that the feeling of arms around him was typically a really comforting feeling. Actually, Mat was kind of refreshing as far as customers went. Most sleazy businessmen who came in would have already been pushing for the hard stuff, and he'd be operating from a much lower angle. But then there was this little flower, completely unaware of how this all worked, and he wasn't even greedy. It was a nice way to wind down for the evening, that was for sure.
Breaking for air, he immediately moved to speak near Mat's ear, breath shaking from the kiss. "Have I convinced you to want me more than a single evening yet?" he questioned, dragging his fingers down the other's stomach and letting them rest at the edge of his pants. It was imperative, really, that he convinced Mat that returning was a good idea -- particularly now that he'd gotten an idea of the type of work Mat did.
"Finding" people that don't want to be found. Who they could hurt. That could mean a few things. One, less likely, was that Mat was also a Vigilante. But he was Upper Class, and no, Taren had met others outside of the business -- Mat didn't seem like one. Two, based on the authority, his probable class, the way he spoke -- he was some sort of law enforcement. The dangerous kind. The kind Taren had resigned himself to thinking were a bit too extreme to be "real."
... Nah, he was overthinking things. The other man probably just had other sorts of juicy secrets. He chewed on his lower lip before moving to give Mat another kiss. "I hope I have," he sighed wistfully, fingers gliding along the pants' waistband. "I don't think I could get tired of your lips." Maybe he was playing it up a bitch much. Did he slip? Was that too obviously "staged"? ... And what was that noise he'd heard at the edge of his hearing, outside of his room?

Luckily for Ren, though Matiko could recognize questions as 'digging', he wasn't nearly experienced enough to recognize where the line between honest flirting and badly written erotic dialogue was - sometimes it was a blurred line, true, but he was far out to left field when it came to discerning where it lie. He was a bit more concerned with the placement of the other man's hand, more than warm, right at the edge of his pants - face flushed, his words said one thing but the tone of his voice, the way speech rode on his breath - it gave away that he wasn't nearly as cold as he was trying to let off.
"I'm.... considering," was all he answered for now, was all he could manage at the moment. It was really all he had, but considering the lips that were on his again, he didn't have time for his thoughts to put together a few more sentences. It was only when Ren leaned back to speak again that Matiko's attention was shifted away.
A noise - - what was that noise?
Mat pulled away, turning his attention towards the door to the room just as someone shouted. He wasn't an expert on the noises one might hear in a place like this, and although he suspected some people liked to make things dangerous, he somehow thought that it was the kind of scream that could only mean one thing: trouble. Palm brought up to Ren's chest, he pushed the other man back a bit - not completely away from him, but with some space in between. Just as he did so, the smell of smoke reached his nose, more shouting.
Not good. He was unarmed- there were some Magix in his coat pockets if he needed but without knowing what the trouble was, it was hard to say what would help. Voice almost seeming detached and distant compared to the way he'd spoken even a moment earlier, he stated, "That's not good."

It didn't seem, to Taren at least, that Mat was holding onto the cool personality too well anymore. His voice and breathing had given it away, the fact that the ice was being melted slowly but surely. That's all the ammo he needed, honestly, because it meant every little thing he said or did was finding the right chinks in the other man's armor.
But it would all have to wait. The sound he'd heard and filtered out wasn't a one-off, and it turned out that his guest had not tuned it out as well. It was then that it reached him, the scream of a voice that was familiar to him. Alarm immediately registered in his eyes, wiping off any sort of control he seemed to have moments prior. Because of this, the hand at his chest found no resistance, but potentially could have felt how hard his heart was beating.
No, in fact, after another second, the smell of smoke made him completely get up on his feet, but he felt stunned and out of his element. "No, it's not," he found himself answering, quietly and calmly, not verbally giving away how nervous he was. What was he supposed to do ??? This wasn't -- something he was --
Another scream, another voice he recognized, and a hand flew to his mouth in concern. He wasn't scared this was happening. No, it was churning to something else. He knew the police would only let this place and anyone in it burn before seeing to it. This wasn't right, there had never been even close calls with fires starting, everyone was much more aware than this. Now that they were in trouble, how were they supposed to get out of it?
But then he remembered. He turned to Mat, eyes only giving away conflicted emotions. Upper Class assholes generally would be more focused on themselves, right? But -- Mat may have been from the Upper Class, but he was some sort of authority. Danger wasn't going to make him bolt, was it? He could help -- but Taren did not ask for help. He did not need help. ... And yet, despite this, the words were out of his mouth as the smoke in the room seemed to increase, "What should we do -- ?"
