Timeline: In the high class district, as a medical student, the first meeting with Ellie, age 18 in the year 2859 Another year, another fancy party he didn’t belong to. Levenin sighed as he sat at his table alone, still waiting for the main meals to be delivered for the night as he rolled a piece of hors d'oeuvres around with his fork. Honestly, he was thankful no one else here seemed interested in having a conversation with him. At the same time, it made him feel even more awkward than usual to yet again be the reigning wallflower. Wasn’t the whole reason for dragging himself here to make connections in the industry? He should’ve never even bothered. It was obvious he was a stranger to these social functions, no matter how hard he tried to fit in. Levenin could’ve been at home right now instead of in this stuffy white suit of his.
Levenin’s self pity party was interrupted as the crowd began to part. A rather tall woman walking to the center motioned towards a figure entering from across the ball room, though he was unable to see much of anything over the horde. ”Our esteemed guests,” she declared, her voice loud and clear through the assistance of a microphone. ”We finally present to you our guest of honor, Chairman Johnathan Kreuger.”
Lev stood on his chair, ignoring how silly he must’ve looked at the moment as the crowd began to clap. So there he was, the medical industry big shot in the flesh, just as perfect and elegant as expected for the head of the Novus Medical Association. Levenin knew very little about Kreuger besides the fact he was respected and probably exceedingly rich. Crouching back down as people began to filter back to their seats, he immediately forgot about his concerns as the aroma of dinner wafted into the room. Finally.
The young man kept his gaze down, staring at his slightly used silverware in order to avoid contact. Oh God, he was surrounded on all sides now. Idle chatter from the fellow guests drowned out much else in his head. Levenin began to feel a panic rising as he aggressively tried to avoid looking up, even after dinner was placed for all to indulge in. Why did I come here? Why did I come here? Why did I come here?
His mantra of madness echoed over and over until something else caught his attention. ”Excuse me?”
Levenin jerked his head up at the sound of someone addressing him. ”Huh?"
”Are you alright? You don't look well,” asked a man seated next to him, none other than Johnathan Kreuger himself, with a concerned expression drawn on his face.
O-Oh my…
”Oh, umm… Yeah, I’m f-fine. Just hungry.”
Levenin giggled uncomfortably, though it was enough for Kreuger to smile and offer a hand before laughing himself. Just what was this guy doing over here instead of at the VIP table? The eyes of the other people here bore into him as they watched in silent jealousy and passive aggressively chomped down on their meals. Oh great.
”Then I suggest you eat up! But first, might I ask your name?”
”Uhh, Lev. I mean, Levenin Refure.”

She hated events like these.
It was the first time she'd been hired to work a party like this, but she'd been to too many back when she'd lived with her parents. She could practically hear her mother 'get your hair out of your eyes, Daddy paid good money for those' and it made her practically sick. But no, she was here to do a job and she would do it.
Her primary client was a doctor, some greasy looking dude with an obvious magic addiction and poorly maintained ear mods. Whatever, she just filed that information away for potential sale, though she doubted it was worth it. The guy was upper class but barely. He'd hired her because he couldn't afford one of the higher class body guard companies, and even then he'd only gotten her after she offered a discount. Work was slow and there was the chance to overhear something worth more than her usual fees.
The party seemed to be centered around one dude, a Krueger. She vaguely remembered hearing his name from her parents; apparently her mother had been on his waiting list for two years to have him install some mod she was wanting. He was the leading expert on non animal cosmetic mods it seemed. Ellie briefly entertained the idea of slipping him her card; someone that esteemed must have need of a bodyguard. But then she saw the two men shadowing him wore the logo of Safvus, a private company that was rumored to employ secret police for their clients. No way he'd hire a girl from the lower class.
Still, she kept her eyes on him as she followed her client between tables. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes when he made his way over to what looked like a spineless wimp in the beginnings of a breakdown. Her client noticed too and hurried over too. "Is something wrong, young man?" he asked, setting his hand on the scrawny dweeb's shoulder. "You look quite ill. Oh, Dr. Krueger, how lovely to see you again."
God, she hated events like these.

Levenin sat stiff as a board as he was accosted by a second man, the identity of which he had no clue. All he knew was that he was being touched without consent and he was incredibly uncomfortable with this entire situation. A few minutes of back and forth conversation later, Kreuger relinquished his attention to entertain his other fans at the table. Lev finally exhaled, having been holding in his breath the whole time (and yet somehow talking through it). And with Kreuger went the other man, who followed him like a lovesick dog as the rounds were made.
Lev slouched in his seat despite the bad manners it showed as he spooned a few dinner items onto his plate. He wasn’t even hungry anymore. Far too many butterflies in his stomach for that. When was it considered too early to leave a social function like this? Surely no one would even notice him leaving, considering how much he blended in already. There were benefits to being a blip on the radar and a timely escape was one of them. But first he might as well try to choke down some of this feast. It was complimentary and there was nothing to eat back at home. As usual.
Just as he sat back up straight to reluctantly stuff down his meal, a crackling sound from inside his head made him pause before his vision blacked out suddenly. When he awoke an unknown time later, Levenin was no longer in his seat but now being dragged across the pristine white floor in a hurry. The once bustling crowd laid strewn around him, silent and unmoving.
Oh… Oh God, are they…?
Lev began to struggle against whatever force was dragging him from behind, screaming in panic. This only earned him a swift kick to the back before a hand clasped itself roughly over his mouth. ”Shut up, kid!” was his only reply.
His eyes flitted across the room in an attempt to see his captor, but to no avail. It wasn’t just him, however, as he saw others being carried and dragged along by hooded figures in the distance- one of them including Kreuger just a few feet away. Vigilantes...? But how did they get in?!
In his mind, Levenin knew what it was. The sudden knockout and electric crackling meant it had to be an EMP weapon of some sort to induce temporary unconsciousness. Chances are nobody was dead, only passed out until their neural chips went back online. But at the moment, that possibility was the furthest thing from his head as he was slowly taken somewhere in the back and out of sight. Rogues were here and why, he couldn't fathom. It was just some dumb party, wasn't it? What’re they going to do? Are we being held hostage? An execution? But why?!
”What’re you doing carrying them around? Bind them and take them into the storage room!” came a stern, hurried voice, followed by Lev being thrown to the floor and his arms being wrested behind him as they were tied down.
Now there was little he could do but wait.

Ellie had seen the PDA that launched the EMP a split second before everything shut down. She'd been fast enough to shove her client down but nothing else, resulting in her waking up half on top of him. There was the distinct buzzing in her ears that always followed by 'bluescreening' as it was referred to down in the lower rungs. Her arms had been bound tightly behind her.
Why would the secret police be here? This was a high class event, not a vigilante meet up or a black market bazaar.
She was pulled to her feet and not all that gently. She recognized the mask of the man that was dragging her. With a sick sort of horror she realized that she'd sold information to him; he knew who she was. Even in the lower class, she was still the daughter of a high class family. If they killed her, it'd still make a statement.
She was thrown into a small storage room, the door pulled shut before she could ram into it. "Fuck!" she kicked at the door. "You fuckers let me out of here! I'm not one of them! I will kill you! LET ME GO!"

Only a handful of people made it into the storage room in the end, all tied up and some of the more hysterical ones also gagged to prevent making any further noise. Levenin was smart enough to cease his screaming after the initial hand slap over his mouth, though now he was just as helpless as everyone else here. Normally he’d be trembling and sobbing uncontrollably, but his emotions had since come full circle since this whole affair had begun.
A drying trail of tears on his face was the only thing that’d signaled he’d ever broken composure. Lev sat watching a woman kicking wildly at the door. He could hear some yelling from the other side, probably one of the Vigilantes telling her to shut up. Why they hadn’t silenced her yet was a mystery. All he knew was that he was starving. ”Hey uh… You shouldn’t do that. You’ll just make them angry,” said Levenin, puzzled that he even had to tell this to a hostage. As angry as she was, it might’ve been wiser to not say anything.
In between the thumping of his heart in his throat and the hollow ringing of the doors being kicked, Levenin finally noticed something strange. ”Umm… Where’s Dr. Kreuger?”
A few of the other captives perked up and glanced around at his question, but none could place him. He knew the man had been taken too, he'd seen it firsthand. Apparently he was special enough to not be stashed in here. If the head of the NMA wasn’t enough collateral, then why did the rest of them need to be involved with this?
A feeling of pure dread dawned on Lev as the doors were thrust open. Another hooded figure greeted them, shooting a nasty look at the kicking woman before taking her by the hair. ”No, not that one. Red says we might get in trouble with her. Make her a last resort,” warned another accompanying him. Grabbing a different girl sitting nearby after a scoff, out they went without a word. A minute later and the cry of a gun sounded down the hall. Levenin’s calm drained from his body and mind in seconds as he realized they were bargaining chips, and the sobbing began anew.
”I don’t wanna die, please. I don’t wanna die.”

Ellie instinctively jerked at the grab to her hair, trying to pull away from the man. She was about to try to attack him when the other one spoke. Trouble, huh? She wasn't sure if that was due to her connections in the black market or with the Vigilante she'd seen earlier, the one she'd sold intel to. Ohh, she was going to find him and make him eat his own mods once she was out of here.
She was shoved to the ground next to the other hostages. Giving her shoulders a roll to try and shake out the stiffness that was already settling in. "Probably dead, or about to be." She answered the one kid's question about the doctor. She didn't flinch when she heard the gun shot that surely killed the other girl that they'd taken in her place; she'd seen enough bodies since dropping down to the lower class to be numb to the death of strangers.
"Don't be a baby." She didn't bother to look at him, casting a look about. The ones guarding them seemed weak, but these days who could tell what mods people had. "You keep blubbering and they'll kill you sooner just to shut you up."

Levenin recognized the badge on the woman’s chest- a security pass. She wasn’t in uniform, but maybe was someone’s private bodyguard instead. Either way, clearly the most qualified person here for busting them out.
”Hey, you’re part of the security team, aren’t you? Do something!” he urged, still sniffling through his fear.
What the Vigilantes were bargaining for didn’t matter, only that it meant they were all going to be shot one by one until the inevitable rescue. But how long would that take? Kreuger would be first priority over the rest of them. This fact did little to set his mind at ease.
”What happens if they kill Dr. Kreuger? Will they come after us next? Or if the secret police shows up and get to him first, will the Vigilantes hold us hostage elsewhere? We can’t stay in here! We’re going to be out of luck either way!”
There he went again, blubbering on like he did when he became overwhelmed with nerves. Most would have forgiven Lev, considering the situation, but this woman was having none of it. Neither were the others around him as he heard the quiet whimpering begin to echo throughout the room. ”We… We have to take matters into our own hands, don’t we…?”

Ellie shot the kid a look when he started blubbering again, only this time he was right next to her. Great. "Listen, kid, I'm not your babysitter. Now back up before I--" she paused when he suggested taking things into their own hands. Actually...
"Okay, kid, you wanna live? You listen to me and maybe I can make that happen. You got that?" She kept her voice low, looking between the two vigilantes still guarding them. Even with full use of her arms she probably couldn't take them both at once: she was still fairly new to the whole fighting thing. But if she was careful maybe they could make it work. Worth a shot anyway.
"Get the fuck away from me, you idiot. Go over there and cry if you're going to." She said loudly, giving the crying dolt a push with her foot. "Be someone else's problem."

Levenin blinked a few times before her words registered in his head. He’d only been spouting off whatever came to mind. Formulating a plan wasn’t a serious thing at all. What could one bodyguard and a bunch of high class types ever hope to do against a fully prepared terrorist group?
”B-But we don’t know their numbers or what weapons they have! We dunno where we are in the building and what they’re-“
His protests were cut short as a well-placed foot to his back knocked him to the floor. ”What’d you do that for?!” Rolling around to become upright, he scowled at the woman. As if his spine wasn't already sore from the first time it'd been hit. ”What’s your problem?! Aren’t you supposed to be getting us out of this mess?!”
The doors swung open, a Vigilante peering at them through the darkness with an expression of absolute annoyance. Strangely, from what little Lev could see, his buddy had left the man the only one there to oversee the commotion. Did the guard change out?
”What the hell is going on in here?” Seeing Levenin first, he grabbed the boy by the collar of his suit before shoving him into the pile of people along the back wall. ”Do you want to be next? Get back into place and shut up.”

Oh god, this kid was an idiot. Did he completely lack any ability to read between the lines? Good lord, she just wanted to shake him. Luckily, even with him apparently not getting it, the plan still seemed to work somehow. There went a guard over to the idiot which meant...
Acting fast, she jumped to her feet and rammed her shoulder into the vigilante's back. He fell forward, caught off guard, and she dealt a few hard kicks to his ribs before kicking his face hard enough to shatter some of his teeth. Panting, she went over and started kicking the stupid idiot, albeit much less hard. "YOU FUCKING IDIOT! WHEN I TELL YOU TO DO SOMETHING SO WE DON'T DIE YOU DO IT!" she barked. "Now get off your useless ass and help me get these ropes off! Does anyone in here have a knife? They took my gun."
