The gun was most likely jammed, which would’ve been lucky had it been used against him, but all it could amount to now was a bluff. Levenin knew these Vigilantes wouldn’t care, though. In fact, they were laughing at him while he stood there hoping beyond hope that this thing wouldn’t magically unload into his skull.
”Where the hell has this one been hiding?” said one of them, cocking his own weapon but with no sense of urgency.
”He’s more bold than anyone else at this party, I’ll give him that,” commented another as he cautiously circled Lev, sticking his own gun at him tauntingly. ”We’ll be generous and give you a choice, then. Either you kill yourself or I’ll do it.”
They snickered amongst themselves more until Red finally took a closer look at their toy. At first he seemed disinterested and willing to let his crew do whatever they wished, until his eyes widened in realization. This kid was definitely one of the hostages taken to the back room earlier, wasn’t it?
”He escaped from upstairs! Someone check in with—”
Levenin dropped his gun when attention was taken off of him and he almost couldn’t bring himself to see the commotion behind him. With so many gun shots ringing out, there was no way she was alive. This plan had been doomed from the beginning. Her scream of pain was what finally gave him enough strength of will to turn around. She had been injured but was shooting back. And winning.
He fell to the floor as a bullet scraped past his cheek, close enough to take a few strands of hair along with it. They had a chance to make it out alive. But he couldn’t shoot another person. If he picked up another gun, there was little chance it’d be plugged this time. Time wasn't willing to give him a moment to decide on his moralities as he saw a body rising in the back of the room, one that didn’t belong to a partygoer or police officer. It was the acceptance that Levenin had to at least try, even if it ended up failing horribly, that pushed him to snatch a fallen gun off the floor and fire a handful of shots blindly. The bodyguard was certainly this Vigilante’s target but a surprise bullet in his hand quickly put a stop to that. The world felt numb. He hadn’t killed anyone, but…
”Hurry up and finish this… Please…”
