Age & Date of Birth: 35; August 16th
Gender: Male
Class: Slums
Occupation: Black Market Doctor
Affiliation: Vigilante
Genetic Modifications:
Gene Splicing - King Cobra
-Scaled Skin
-Sensitivity to Heat
-Long Tail, measuring at around five feet long. Mostly prehensile, but not particularly strong or useful for combat without physical magic.
-Enhanced Sense of Taste (Can 'taste scents'); Capable of discerning different 'tastes' people have, making tracking fairly easy. Can taste food and spices through scent as well, although there is no practical application pertaining to his work.
-Retractable Fangs, capable of transmitting neurotoxin.
-Production of Neurotoxins in Venom Glands (Located in the head and hands); Neurotoxin consists of haditoxin, also known as King Cobra venom. The toxins affect the victim's central nervous system, resulting in severe pain, blurred vision, vertigo, drowsiness, and eventually paralysis. If the envenomation is serious, it progresses to cardiovascular collapse, and the victim falls into a coma. Death soon follows due to respiratory failure.
Gene Splicing - Harpy Eagle
-Sparse Patches of Feathers (On head, tail, back, and forearms)
-Powerful Talons (On fingers and toes; Finger talons can transmit neurotoxin); Finger talons are thick, but hollow. Fingers and toes have a powerful grip. Feet have dew claws and can grip as easily as hands.
-Digitigrade legs, allowing for powerful leaps but making walking awkward
-Keen Eyes (Capable of seeing with exceptional detail. Can see approximately twice as far as a normal human with great clarity. Has great difficulty seeing object beneath the surface of water, though. Hand-eye coordination is exceptional, though.
-Body is awkward for actual martial combat, making him take more tactical approaches.
Unique Tech:
Hollowed Carbon Fiber Bones - Stronger than normal bones, but weaker than full carbon fiber bones; Makes Vaina exceptionally light. Only legs and arms are modified.
Aural Implants - Specialized implants in the ears that allow sensing of electrical currents and pulses, heard as a quiet crackling. The implants can also translate data received by Vainamoina's drone spiders, allowing his brain to quickly process it. Maximum range of 5 meters.
Artificial Liver - Allows Vaina to quickly process and neutralize toxins; Antivenin and the like are produced and can be collected with a direct, precise drawing of fluids. Renders him practically immune to many toxins, mostly neurotoxins, especially those derived from snake venom. Unfamiliar toxins can have their effects mitigated, with partial or full immunity being gained after recovery, depending on the strength of the toxin. Minor bacterial and viral infections are quickly neutralized. Stronger infections tend to have their effects mitigated into survivable ranges, with partial or even full immunity remaining after recovery. Antibodies stay within his bloodstream, allowing others to utilize his blood for immunity as well. The blood can be used by anyone, thanks to Vainamoina's O-Negative Blood Type.
Spiders - Small, mechanical spiders kept on Vaina's person. Are equipped with small cameras and microphones, allowing for discreet spying on the fly. Information can be sent to Vaina through specialized electrical pulses, the data of which is collected in his aural implants. Easy to destroy, with no real combat ability. Carries a maximum of five. Maximum range of data transmission is 5 meters.
Fear Factor - A long, solid-black staff with a large hoop at the end. The staff itself is actually a multi-purpose tool, with many panels that can be slid back to reveal cables to upload and download data. The bottom end of the staff is a jack that can be used to disable electronic locks of low-class level or below. Middle-class locks can be disabled as well, but with a much lower success rate. The hoop at the end of the staff is actually a weapon with a modified targeting system. Targets are locked onto using a primitive radar-like system that is exceptionally difficult to jam, but not as accurate as modern targeting technology. Two targets can be locked onto at a time. The inner part of the hoop is a modified tesla coil, capable of delivering mid-range, powerful electrical blasts at targets. Typically, the blasts carry a charge of 5 million volts, enough to stun a human and cause great pain. Various discreet buttons are located on the staff, which are used to activate other devices on Vainamoina's person.
Kinetic Shielding - A small, lightweight metal box hidden in Vainamoina's robes. Can be activated remotely via Fear Factor. Unlike traditional shielding, this is only meant to stop physical projectiles. When activated, it forms a powerful energy shield capable of stopping up to ten bullets before breaking. Must be recharged before another use.
Grenades - Simple grenades hidden in Vainamoina's robes. Include frag grenades, flashbang grenades, and smoke grenades. Typically Vaina will keep four of each on his person at maximum.
Aerosol Claw - A small device made to fit on Vainamoina's left index finger. Neurotoxin pumped into this device can be released as an aerosol, poisoning all who inhale it. Much less potent than direct injection, functioning more as a knock-out gas than an actual killing tool.
Security Dampener - A small metal box hidden in Vainamoina's robes. Can be activated remotely via Fear Factor. Renders cameras, listening devices, and scanners inoperable for two minutes. Has a very short battery life. Maximum range of 5 meters.
Appearance: Vaina is rather tall, standing at 6'2". This is mitigated in practice by his habit of hunching over, often to present the appearance of someone weak and feeble. His musculature should be well-defined, given his genetic modifications, but he actually looks a bit thin and weak. He is hairless with a green-yellow, scaled skin. Black chevron-like markings adorn his back, and his neck and front are a very pale shade of yellow. He has a long, powerful snake-like talk. Black and grey feathers adorn his head, forearms, upper back, and most of his tail. Long, curved talons are present in place of nails. His face has no real 'nose', although it protrudes a bit in a facsimile of a snake's snout, with two slits for nostrils. His eyes are reddish-brown and typically have a piercing, accusatory look. If one were to look inside his mouth, they would find the normally pink flesh inside is instead black, including his exceptionally long tongue. His NUIP jack is located at the base of his skull, covered by feathers.
Typically, most of Vaina is not seen. He wraps his body in many layers of tan, protective cloth. Over it he wears tattered, light grey robes with long, loose sleeves. Many bits of fabric, some adorned with useless bits of metal and baubles, are wrapped all over his chest, body, and neck. This leads to a bulky, many-layered look. His head is typically hidden at all times, obscured by a grey, floppy, pointed hat with a ridiculously large brim with a circumference larger than his body. All in all, this gives him an archaic, wizard-like look that leads many people to question his sanity and legitimacy as a doctor.
Personality: At his core, Vaina is a kind, understanding man. He knows full well the suffering the lower castes have endured, and he will do what he can to ease it. On the surface, however, he is a bitter man with little patience. Typically speaking with a raspy hiss, he is quick to dismiss those who irk him and even quicker to insult. He comes across as rather unpleasant overall. He has a habit of not sharing his thoughts, leading him to come to wild conclusions that make sense to him, but not to others. Typically he will act without speaking, performing what he sees as necessary actions. Technology and magic are a part of life to him, but are also crutches for those who cannot think. To him, the simplest answer is usually the correct one, and he considers his greatest strength to be common sense. He is a mysterious mind, but in the end he will always do what benefits the masses. He can be unforgiving, cruel, and even hateful... but he always means well. He takes all things in stride, never panicking or worrying, instead thinking intently about his next move and the positives and negatives that will come from it. In dangerous situations this makes him come across as arrogant... but he's simply thoughtful.
Background: Varok Stern was born into a small, Upper-Class family. He ws always given the best in life, and was never left wanting. When he asked for something, he was given it. He went to a prestigious medical academy, learning all he could about the human body and technology's effects on it. His goal was simple - to live forever. Why shouldn't he? He was a higher breed than most. Surely his great mind could be of use to the world for all of eternity. He was a sheltered, stupid boy at heart.
Varok lived in a strange position. It was a sort of 'high rise' far above most of the city, with the slums far, far below. Honestly, he never gave what was beneath his feet much thought. He was taught not to. However, things changed when unauthorized Slum-Class citizens found their way there. Nobody knew how they got so high up. How they evaded security. It was desperation. They were a very sick family. The Slums and Lower Class didn't have a cure, so they assumed the Upper Class did. This was a mistake. They were forcibly removed from the area, or at least an attempt was made. A child in the family tried to fight back, and was shot like a diseased mutt, his body cast back down to the slums where he belonged. Varok... didn't know what to think. He had never seen this kind of brutality. The visitors were called 'animals' and 'monsters'. In time, all were cast down to the slums. Varok tried to interfere. A capital offense, he was shot in the gut and tossed down below as well.
He did not die. He was broken and bleeding, but an old man had kept him alive. Some kind of slum doctor. Varok looked around at the squalor these people lived in. Why weren't they given the same quality of life? Why were they killed? Why call them monsters? His life was a lie.
It took a while to recover and become used to his new life. However, his medical knowledge made him a valuable assistant to the doctor. Helping people was nice. But... it was only a patch on a much larger wound. Something had to be done. Some kind of... political upheaval. So he scavenged and saved what little money he could. Soon, he had enough.
He walked into the office of a shady surgeon. A man who could change your genetic structure. Make your form more... desireable. Varok didn't want that. When asked what he needed done, he only replied 'Make me a monster.'
Varok never left the office. Vainamoina, however, did. A form fitting the... thing he was before he knew of what lived beneath his feet. A sort of atonement. But... better than that, it was a form that could strike terror into the hearts of those haughty, arrogant men who lived above. He continued his work, but his new form frightened the children, the people he wished to help most. From that day on, he kept his entire self concealed. A bundle of rags with a large hat and a strange voice. Clawed hands that worked tirelessly to fix what was broken. A heart that yearned not only for redemption, but for revenge.
He joined the underground resistance. His mody became more modified over time, allowing for more utility both in the clinic and in the field. He taught himself how to work with machines and electricity. He became a miracle worker, both medically and with the revolution. He was just getting started.[/ul]
