A clinic was nothing like a restaurant, and yet the staff at Canaan referred to their daily work in such terms. A “lunch rush” typically happened early in the day, when the sun was at its peak and children were more likely to hurt themselves when playing outside. Heat illness was common. Then there was the “dinner rush” and the fun with that was the late night happenings that tended to bring in their clientele: beleaguered criminals, Vigilantes, gunshot victims, stabbings, Magix overdoses, the rare pregnant woman in labor. Messy was what it was. “Closing” was always an adventure as well, what with having to sneak out before any stragglers showed up to hassle them. A 24/7 staff just wasn’t possible, as much as the clinic hated to admit.
Today, lunch rush was finally over as the Canaan lobby sat mostly empty, with only one or two still waiting to be seen. Levenin escorted out his most recent patient- a little girl with stitches across her arm from where she’d fallen about an hour ago, and her frazzled mother. ”Thank you so much!” said the woman.
Lev shook his head. ”It was my pleasure. Just apply the gel over the site for the next few days. It’ll reduce infection risk and help the healing along. The stitches should fall out on their own.”
Giving an extra little wave to the girl, who beamed at him with a mouth full of missing teeth, the two went on their way. Levenin sighed when the door shut. ”These kids are such a handful…”
Lucca appeared behind him, one arm holding a cloth wrapped with tools for his next appointment. ”Gotta admire their resilience, though,” he chuckled. ”I don’t think I could handle half the things they can at my age anymore.”
Levenin closed his eyes with a smile. Lucca sounded like an old man sometimes. Not that he could blame him with the way this job was. With his coworker went the remaining people in the lobby, leaving Lev alone. The first bit of free time he’d had today.
Or at least till the door opened once more. ”Hello! What can I help- oh my.”

It all started out with shock and a deafening ringing in his ears. Things seemed to move in slow motion for the split second it happened. He could see the vigilantes move in front of him, charging at the man that held a steaming gun. He felt his knees go weak and he collapsed to the ground, water from the pouring rain splashing outwards as all sound a speed of time rushed back to him in an instant. The pain hit him all at once and Riku set up on his knees, his hand clasping over his bloodied side. It was then that the shock left him and he fully realized what exactly happened.
One of the vigilantes rushed to him, sliding on the ground to see if he could help but Riku instantly pushed him away with a growl. "They're getting away!"
"Yeah but-" The guy glanced to the fight that was moving down the ally, only a few vigilantes following the guy that had just shot Riku and the rest of his group. Riku couldn't tell if the man was more concerned with his injury or just wanted an excuse to stay out of the fight. Riku grabbed his shirt yanking him close with a glare. "I'll be fine, GO!" With a split moment of hesitation, the guy got up a ran after the other, leaving Riku to fend for himself.
It was now that Riku noticed that the water around him had already became red with his blood. If he wanted to actually survive he needed to hurry up and actually make it to somewhere where he could stop this bleeding. [before I leave-] He turned to a storage unit that held tech that he had been trying to deliver to the vigilantes. There was no way in hell he was just going to leave it open for it to just be stolen. Before getting up, Riku pulled off the clothes that covered his civilian ones and wrapped them over his two swords. It'd be much easier to move around without them, plus he wouldn't attract as much attention.
With the rain pleating down on him, he pulled himself up, almost slipping in the process. He throw his gear in the unit locking it afterwards and then activating the hologram that normally camouflaged the unit. He didn't even care that the rain made it slightly unstable right now, after all he was kinda bleeding out and didn't have time to care.
About 10 minutes and a lot of blood loss later, Riku found himself at a back alley Doctor office that the vigilantes frequently talked about. Seeing the front door with light shining through it was probably one of the biggest reliefs Riku had ever felt and he trudged through puddles of water to reach the front door. Once he reached the door, Riku swung it open. He had to keep hold of the door just so he wouldn't collapse onto the floor. "Hey." He shakingly motioned to the one person he say in the lobby. He was dripping wet and as he took a glance down he could see that there was already a small bit of blood on the floor along with the water. He gave a small weak laugh, finding himself pretty pathetic for losing so much blood from just being shot in the side. He was pretty sure it didn't hit anything to vital but he guessed a gunshot was still bad either way. He narrowed his eyes, raising his head up to look at the other with a weak smile. "You're not c-closed are y-you?"

Levenin froze for a moment before jumping into action like any respectable medical profession would have from the get-go. ”J-J-Just hold on, okay?! Lemme uh…”
He went to touch the poor soul before realizing how drenched in blood he’d be. A towel? Yes, of course! There was a growing mess on the floor and he didn’t want any walk-ins to slip on it. That’d be dreadful. Waving and holding his arms out as if to direct the man to stay like a dog, Lev sprinted to the back for supplies- the aforementioned towel, a small sedative, a roll of bandages (if that would even be enough). Maybe he should’ve actually looked at the wound instead of running off. That might’ve been the smart thing to do.
On his way back out, Lev pushed a figure out of the way. ”S-Sorry, Carcassonne!” he apologized before bending down to grab onto the wounded man’s free arm. He was much heavier than he looked. The ears probably had something to do with it.
”Well, if you want him so bad,” she teased. ”Do you need help moving him?”
”Uhhh…” The boy was smiling, though it was obvious he was fading fast. ”Y-Yeah, let’s take him to room 2 for now. Uhh, if it’s messy, I might need you to help me get him to the surgery room.”
”Okie dokie! I'll get the stool real quick.”
Between the two of them, the rabbit man was light and easy to navigate through the lobby and into a seat behind a curtained off area. Carcassonne lifted his legs with a foot stool before leaving the scene to her compatriot with a silent smile. Levenin held a towel firmly over the wound to staunch the bleeding while he observed just what it was they were dealing with here. A deep hole with angle to it from uneven entry. Likely why it’d been torn so badly. A classic bullet injury if he ever saw one. ”Umm, does it hurt badly? Because I do have some numbing agent here before we start anything.”

If Riku hadn't been so lightheaded he probably would have started laughing over how frantic the man was. There was just something amusing over someone panicking over him...maybe because he'd never experienced anything like it before. He was being herded around and eventually made to sit while the man did some rushing to get things cleaned up and prepared. Riku felt bad for dripping and bleeding everywhere but honestly it wasn't like he could help it much. While the man rushed about he just kept his hand to the wound, trying to help the bleeding slow.
In almost no time at all, the man had recruited another person to help move him. Although Riku wanted to protest being carried around he thought it would be best just to follow directions. He probably would have ended up tripping anyway and caused even more trouble. He was set up pretty quickly once he was behind a area covered by a curtain and the Doctor replaced Riku's hand with a towel to probably clean up and halt the bleeding more.
With the question of how badly it hurt and if he needed any numbing agent, Riku gave a light laugh with his eyes closed. "I'll be fine so just go ahead and start." He opened his eyes to look at the other, giving him laxed smile despite still being in quite a bit of pain. "I mean I've already been shot, can't be much more painful than that."
Pausing for a moment, Riku reached up and started to unsnap his vest to take off. He imagined it wouldn't be too much in the way since it didn't cover his midriff but it was probably too close to the wound and would cause trouble when the doc was patching him up. So, He slipped it off along with the scarf attached to it and let it sit besides him. "Do whatever you got to." He smiled a little bigger, his eyes narrowing. "and sorry in advance for being so soaked.~"

”Umm, if you say so.”
Most opted for the pain numbing agent, if only because they were already suffering but also because a great number of people really didn’t like needles. He couldn’t blame them. As someone who handled them on a daily basis, Levenin wasn’t exactly fond of them either. It was probably best not to tell this new patient of his how many times he’d accidentally pricked himself in and had to hide the fact while performing check ups with jello fingers.
He carefully placed the needle back in the tub of hydrogen peroxide his other tools were currently marinating in on the side table. The rabbit’s smile wasn’t too deceiving as to how he actually felt, but not like Lev could force the sedative on him. Oh well, might as well be quick for his sake then. Strapping on a pair of gloves, Levenin tenderly began cleaning the wound with a cotton swab and a healthy dose of sterilizing agent. ”What’s your name? Uhh, just so I don’t refer to you as… you. I'm Nineveh, by the way.”
From the looks of things, the gunshot itself would be relatively easy to patch up. It was a pretty clean little hole, all things considered.
”So uh, it’ll probably be best to leave the bullet in there, as strange as it sounds. I could give you a long explanation but ummm… If it stays in there, it’ll keep your blood vessels plugged. When a bullet stops moving, it really isn’t a danger anymore. We uh… We don’t have the supplies to deal with the bleeding if I were to take it out so…”
His least favorite part of every single person he had to treat: making small talk to them. ”But I’m told I’m the best stitcher here so maybe that’ll make you feel better? Umm…”

Riku pause at the other asking his name. Give a fake name or his actual name? Honestly it would probably be better to just use his first name since he wasn't in a disguise. Besides it wasn't like there wasn't anyone else with his name, it wasn't that special. "Riku" He mutterer, leaning back on on of his hands to try and stay more still for Nineveh. The wound being cleaned didn't really hurt, just felt weird to have something poking into it.
The other seemed pretty strained to be talking. He said 'uh' and 'um' a lot. It reminded Riku of himself despite him not ever saying them but he linked it to not being good at talking to others. Which...[Shit.] Riku frowned a little. Thinking about it just reminded him that he was also terrible at conversation and this was probably going to turn out to be even more awkward than he has hoped for. Why was he so resilient? why couldn't he have just passed out from blood loss or something? He was sure the other guy was thinking something similar.
"So...I guess metal detectors will be a problem." Riku laughed slightly, more so at his attempt at a joke. Besides if anything he'd just get it removed at a later date if he needed it to be. Have a bullet in him didn't really bother him much, as long as he was still kicking it was fine. "...I trust your judgment though Doc." He looked down at Nineveh as he worked, reaching up to slick his ears back out of the way so they would block any light or drip water over the other. Speaking of which, it was getting pretty cold. He hoped that it was just because he was drenched and not do to having lost a lot of blood.

Levenin gave another sad smile at the mention of his name. It was a relief in a way to have the cooperation. Most everyone that came around the clinic was intimidating as it was, but there was something about this one that made him sweat. Maybe the gunshot wound. After all, very few civilians were ever caught up in bullet fire unless…
Lev chuckled, however. Gang member, criminal, or otherwise, Riku had a sense of humor about the entire situation. Levenin only regretted not having the supplies or skills to do anything other than just cover up the bullet. ”You’re too kind… I guess there’s at least one person here who trusts me well enough,” he said with more quiet laughing. Perhaps it wasn’t the best idea to convey his low self-esteem in front of the patient.
He noticed Riku’s shivering from the rain that still coated his skin. Normally he would’ve offered a blanket, but that wasn’t an option while still suturing. Lev would just have to work his quickest to make sure the rabbit didn’t suffer the cold for too long. Going to thread a needle, he noticed a small puddle growing on the table drip by drip. Another leak.
”We just patched that up last week…” Levenin pouted before returning his attention to the thread. It didn’t matter how good with his hands he was, for putting a tiny string through an even tinier needle eye was always unnecessarily difficult.
”So uh, I don’t mean to pry or anything. You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to,” said Lev, trying to make more small talk while distracting Riku from how long it was taking. ”But uhh… How did this happen? I mean this wound… I mean, it’s obviously a gunshot but… how?”
There it went. Levenin went back to Riku’s injured side. ”This might feel sorta weird at first but…” In went the tip without another word, starting at the edge to begin weaving this gap back together. ”Anyway… I only ask because it’s a safety thing. If there’s a gang war or something going on around here, I wanna know. Just in case. Not only for me but for anyone else who comes in.”

It actually wasn't that odd that Nineveh asked the source or reason for his injury. That was actually standard protocol if he was remembering it correctly. Either way, Riku didn't feel like he needed to keep anything quiet, it wasn't like he had to go into detail or anything. He wasn't sure if it was the pain that was making his judgement grow thin or him really not feeling threatened. "I don't mind chatting about it." He flinched once at the needle re-entering the skin. Nineveh was right about it feeling weird.
"Besides, Doctor-patient confidentiality right? It's not like you can make a report on me." Riku gave a small chuckle starting to learn back a bit but getting hit with some of the trickling water Nineveh mentioned earlier and retreated back to where he had been. He made a mental note to try and make a reusable donation anonymously later on since they were a free clinic. He could spare a little in between paying his dad's medical bills. "My Dad was a doctor so I know a bit about how things work...Unless a clinic in the slums don't follow the rules." He made another chuckle, mostly joking about his last statement.
"Anyway..." Riku looked down as the other worked. Despite that he was watching a needle being plucked into him, it didn't really phase him to watch. "I was making a delivery to some....customers. We however got jumped because word got out and they were trying to steal the goods for themselves." Even in his current weak state he knew better to at least not mention that he developed tech and weapons. Selling those illegally would end him in jail without even so much as a trail probably. "So I got shot in the commotion...My customers chased after the guys that jumped them and I left for here after making sure to conceal the goods."
Riku sighed, feeling rather tired once he remembered everything that happened again and it was only things that had happened in the past hour too. He had a rough start to the day as well. [heh, must just not be my lucky day.] Riku chuckled slightly, glancing up from the man's work to the man himself. "Ya know...it must be the blood loose or something...I never talk this much, I'm normally such an awkward dork.~"

”I, uh, yeah… But you also don’t have to say anything if you don’t feel comfortable…”
Not that he assumed Riku was a Vigilante or anything right off the bat. It was just the way he was roughed up a bit, besides the whole gunshot issue, made things a bit suspicious. It was actually safer for him not to reveal that detail if it were true, seeing as how it would save the clinic the problem of seeming like it complied with criminals. Somehow Levenin knew law enforcement would be here within the week inquiring about a shoot out. Of course, no one would be ratted out.
”Oh no no no!” he squealed, stopping himself short of waving his hands about with the needle still strung into the skin. Now that would’ve been messy. ”I guess you can call it confidentiality, but we don’t mess with that kind of thing. What other people do is really none of our business. We don’t think anyone should be denied based on affiliation so…”
The stitching was thankfully clean and about halfway done by this point. Levenin continued to wipe at the few trickles of blood that insisted on trying to ruin his handiwork. Not that anyone else would care but it was such a clean bit of work. He was proud of himself for once. ”Customers?”
Wait, had he said that in a funny way? ”Uhh, I mean… Yeah, there are some pretty shady people here in the slums. It’s totally believable what happened to you. Wouldn't be the first time I've heard of something similar. Every now and then, those types show up here and stake out the place while getting care.”
Lev sighed as he thought about it. ”We don’t have much to take as is, but they always seem to find something… But I guess that’s what makes them good at their jobs.” He shook his head before taking his attention away from the threading to give Riku a beaming smile. He didn’t need to dump his own woes on a patient. ”You’re fine. Chatting means you’re feeling better now, right? Unless you’re actually feeling lightheaded?”

Riku frowned listening to the other. He could understand stealing from a clinic that charged money when you didn't have any to pay but stealing from a free one? The thought of it made his stomach turn a bit. He was pretty close to asking about it but the other beamed a smile at him and he suddenly thought that maybe it would be better not to further the topic. He narrowed his eyes, smiling back a bit. "Oh I'm definitely lightheaded.~" He laughed lightly. "But I'm okay, nothing I can't handle. I'm feeling a lot better than when I came in."
Needless to say he was definitely still in pain. I mean he was shot and it probably takes a few days at least for that to heal enough so it's not to hurt. He could still feel the weird feeling of the string being pulled through his skin and the prick of the needle going through his skin. Honestly he was probably a little thankful for the lightheadedness. It was probably blocking out a majority of the pain.
"I am curious about something..." Riku tilted his head, looking at the man. "You look kinda young...What made you decided to be a Doctor in the slums?" Pausing, his ears perked up a little, noticing that that question might be a little personal. "You don't have to answer that." He smiled nervously. He was genuinely curious though. It was rare for doctors to look so young since you had to study for years to get your degree so he wondered if the guy might be a child prodigy or something.
