A loud crack filled the sky, followed by a sizzle that sounded like rain on a tin roof—a rather common sound for most people here. Another crack rang out, and a third. Fireworks shot up and lit the sky, their ashes fluttering down across the small park, their colorful lights flickering across the puddles from the afternoon storm. More fireworks shot out from the top of a broad, red and white circus tent that sat in the center of the park. The rockets sailed up and let loose their sprays of vibrant sparkles, celebrating the show’s struggle against the earlier weather.
“Wow,” said Isaac, his voice dry and his arms crossed over his chest. “Five fireworks? Somebody’s feeling generous.”
A woman laughed behind him. “Is it really that surprising? I mean, come on, look at that crowd.” The woman, dressed in the same black and red leotard as Isaac, pulled back the flap to their changing room, revealing the wooden stands that curved around the single ring arena. The seats were almost packed. A surprising number of people had shown up to see what had almost been a cancelled show. Isaac was honestly impressed, but his cynicism for his ringmaster wasn’t forgotten.
“This is so exciting,” said the woman, whose voice steadily rose higher and higher until she sounded like a teenager. “I wonder if any officials are in the crowd. This could be our chance.” Her enthusiasm was contagious to all but Isaac. The other performers—from the lion tamers to the jugglers to the clowns—all started talking about being recognized. Their troupe had finally gotten a decent advertiser, someone to pull in the fans. With any luck, they’d get noticed by officials or recruiters, and they’d get jobs in a Middle class circus. It might not be tonight, and it might not be this week, but if enough people started talking about the show and its “amazing performers,” then maybe one day they’d get lucky and start living lives of luxury.
Isaac simply shook his head and closed the flap. He stretched his arms and legs while his fellow performers talked and talked. But Isaac’s eyes drifted back to the flap, staring hard as if he could see through it, and he started to wonder if he should maybe break his leg tonight.

Why was she even here again?
The thought passed through Gemma's head again and again as she dodged through throngs of murmuring people, passing by brightly lit food stands and game booths towards the massive tent ahead. She really wasn't a "crowds" type of person. Hell, she wasn't even a people person, if she had to be honest. The girl wouldn't even be here in the first place if it weren't for the tiny hand tugging on hers and essentially dragging her towards the circus tent.
Monty had quite a bit of strength for a six-year-old, she'd give him that.
Most of that could probably be attributed to his unbounded excitement, though. Gemma adjusted her grip on the bag of roasted walnuts, which she'd bought after much pleading from her baby brother. Wouldn't do to lose any after using up some of her hard-earned money, now, would it?
"Will you slow down a bit?" She sighed. "There's still time before the show. Besides, I don't wantcha tripping and falling on your face with how fast you're goin'."

Monty barely registered what his sister said because he was too busy being excited about, well, everything. He'd seen posters advertising a local circus before, but up until now, he'd never gotten the chance to visit. And now that Gemma had finally, finally said yes, he was gonna take the opportunity to gawk at as many amazing things as he could, of which there were plenty.
There were so many people! And so many games and types of food! And there!! Were!! Fireworks!!
He would have been happy with just running around the area around the performance for the entire evening, but then he remembered that there was a whole circus show that they had to see and had thus begun pulling his sister to the giant circus tent. If the posters meant anything, he'd be able to see flying people and magic tricks of all kinds, and none of that could be wasted on his sister's slowness.
"If we don't go fast, we'll miss stuff!" He exclaimed, somehow managing to run even faster and almost making Gemma trip in the process.
They reached the tent in no time. Monty immediately darted inside and scrambled onto the rows of seats to find a good place, plopping down right at the prime vantage point. After making sure that Gemma had properly settled herself next to him, he swung his short legs back and forth and eagerly waited for the show to begin.

The ringmaster was observant, and he was punctual. The very moment that the last seats filled in, the show began. A loud poof and a rush of air silenced the murmuring crowd, and all eyes flew to the center of the ring. Red smoke plumed out across the floor, rolled out to every inch of the ring, and drifted across the legs of front-row guests. Out from the smoke came a man in a bright red costume, lines of smoke streaming down his coattails, spotlights shining down on his shimmering skin and snow white hair.
With a microphone in his hand, the ringmaster called out to the crowd as so many had done before, "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome, welcome to the Supernova Circus. We've got a big house tonight and an even bigger show. You won't want to look away, you won't want to blink. Our exciting, heart-pounding show begins… now!"
Just then, more smoke bombs went off, this time all the way up on the high wooden platform that wrapped around the circus' one giant support column. The column was wide and secretly hollow, and while the smoke still remained on the floor, all of the acrobats climbed inside. From there, they took ziplines up to the top, and once these new smoke bombs exploded, they popped out of a hidden door in the column. The smoke cleared, and there they were, towering over the crowd. To everyone below, it would have seemed as if they had appeared by magic. Children and adults alike applauded their entrance, and the acrobats all smiled and waved. Even Isaac, for all of his cynicism, couldn't help but enjoy the rush of an impending show and a roaring crowd.
"Ladies and Gentlemen," said the ringmaster again. "prepare to be dazzled by our amazing Astral Acrobats. Now, when you see them move, I'm sure many of you will think, 'Surely they must be cheating. They're genetically modified somehow. How is that fair?'" He had put on a child-like voice for this, but his voice grew louder and prouder as he said, "Well keep your jaws on the floor, because these are one hundred percent genuine humans!" The ringmaster then turned around, looked up at the high platform, and shouted, "Now give 'em a show they'll never forget!"
The acrobats—four in total—all stood along the edge of the round platform. They each took a bow, their heads down low, their eyes closed. Then, all at once, they started to lean forward, tipping away from the platform, soon spreading their arms as they all dove off the platform and down to what was surely certain death. The crowd gasped, watching them plummet to the ground. But then, four trapeze suddenly detached from the curved ceiling of the tent. The trapeze swept down toward the acrobats, and in perfect unison they grabbed hold and flew out from the ring, sailing over the crowd.
Isaac flew half a meter over people's heads. A few kids jumped up to touch his feet as he sailed by. He flew in a half circle across his quarter of the crowd before flying back to the ring, where all of the trapeze and their acrobats converged. The acrobats all leaped from their trapeze, looking like they would collide in midair. But they twisted their bodies perfectly, slipping past one another and grabbing the opposite trapeze. Isaac wrapped his legs around the bar, and he flew out toward another quarter of the crowd, holding out his hands for kids to high-five him on his way around.

As soon as the lights dimmed and the show began, Gemma's attention snapped away from watching the crowd around her. She'd never had the chance to go to a circus before, either, so all of this was new to her. And as much as she hated to admit it, the special effects were pretty damn mesmerizing.
With even more puffs of smoke, people appeared mysteriously atop the columns of the circus tent. What were they going to do there? Gemma could only hold her breath and watch.
Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Monty practically vibrating out of his seat with excitement.
Gemma's curiosity quickly turned to horror as the people fucking nosedived off the columns and onto the ground. But just when it looked like they were about to go splat on the circus floor, they caught the rope contraptions that had dropped from the ceiling and swooped away.
"Holy shi--??" Gemma breathed, stopping herself just in time to protect Monty's innocent ears. Seeing people defy death wasn't enough reason to defile her brother's vocabulary with swear words just yet.

It started! The circus started!! Monty's cat eyes darted to the plumes of red smoke sprouting around the arena, eagerly taking in every single detail. He kind of regretted making the two of them rush to the circus tent so quickly now, because if he had a snack of some sort, he'd be chowing down like nothing else right now. Instead, he settled for simply watching the show unfold with his mouth open in amazement.
Monty's jaw dropped even further when he saw the people standing at the top of those pillars, and he gasped with the rest of the crowd as they fell. Then, just in time, they grabbed onto the ropes and swung away from their doom, circling towards the audience. He noticed one of the acrobats swinging towards them with a hand held out, and seizing the chance, Monty thrust up his hand to receive the greatest high five of his six-year-long life.
"GEM!!!" He yelled as soon as the glorious moment had passed, practically bouncing out of his seat. "DID YOU SEE THAT?? DidyouseethatthatwassoccoolohmygoshIcan'tbelievethisrightnow!!"

Like any good show, all of the best acts were sprinkled throughout the night. After their first death-defying act, the acrobats moved to the ground and put on calmer—but still impressive and intriguing—displays of flexibility, balance, and agility. But before too long, they were dismissed, sent back stage to prepare for their final act. The lion tamers came out next, then the clowns.
An hour later, the show reached its finale. The ringmaster called the acrobats out for one last performance, and roaring applause greeted the quartet as they returned to the center platform. Unlike last time, the trapeze released from their mechanisms at the start of the act, and they all swung down over the crowd, then up toward the acrobats. The quartet grabbed their trapezes and flew down to the crowd. But this time, instead of simply swinging around the audience and going in for high fives, the acrobats swung up high until their feet nearly touched the curve of the tent. Then, as they neared the end of their swings, they let go of the bars and did tricks, spinning around before grabbing the bars on their way down and swinging away gracefully.
Isaac made his third swing, and he finished spinning three times in a row before grabbing his trapeze when he heard the audience gasp. Screams followed, and Isaac’s eyes darted around.
On the clear other side of the tent, the other male acrobat hadn’t grabbed his trapeze. He was up in the air, turning around and clawing at the tent to try and hold on, but he fell away, heading down toward the crowd.
Isaac reached for his belt and grabbed a metal tube. The device had only a single button and a metal claw all folded up like a flower on one end. Isaac pointed the tube at the center platform, and he pressed the button, firing the claw that spread open wide as it flew toward the wood. The steel spikes bored into the platform, and the long, thin, but sturdy cable connecting it to Isaac went taut. Isaac swung down low, soaring across the arena while the acrobat flailed his arms and screamed.
Two more grappling hooks sank into the wooden platform. The women came to help, but Isaac reached the man first, snatching him up at the last second. Isaac and the man swept back around, heading for the center of the arena. The three cables tugged against each other as they intersected, but Isaac pressed the button on his grappling hook again, releasing the claw and drawing it back into the tube. He and the acrobat then tumbled across the sand, touching down hard. But they survived, survived to feel the crowd shake the ground with their cheers. Isaac could feel eyes on him, could hear people calling for him, but all of the attention simply made him stare at the sand and grimace.

Alright, so she had to admit the circus was kinda sorta blowing her mind. There was no way that the things these performers were pulling off could be possible without gene mods, she thought, but even so she couldn't help gasping and oohing and ahhing with the rest of the crowd as the show continued on. Even as the performance neared what seemed to be its finale, she wriggled in her seat and watched with undivided attention.
Suddenly the audience's fascinated coos turned to horrified gasps as one of the acrobats missed his trapeze, plummeting down to certain doom. Gemma rose from her seat, her brow furrowed and her mouth open in dismay, but there was nothing she could do about the situation.
Just before the man was about to hit the ground, one of the other acrobats swooped in like a fucking superhero and caught him, sending both tumbling onto the ground unhurt. Gemma couldn't take her eyes off the savior even after he'd gotten up along with his shaken colleague.
That speed. Was that even remotely human?

Monty decided he really liked circuses. Really really really really liked them. This was the kind of stuff he'd always daydreamed of doing, with all those superpower jumps and flips and stuff, and here people were doing it like it was a piece of cake! See, now they were doing triple flips or something, and now someone was making a graceful dive all the way to the ground.
Wait.
Even Monty could tell that wasn't intentional. This guy was actually!! Falling!!! Clapping his small hands to his cheeks, Monty sucked in a noisy gasp of terror. He was about to see someone go splat on the ground like a bug...
All of a sudden, someone flew in from above and caught the guy, preventing both of them from meeting a messy end on the circus floor. As they tumbled onto the ground, the entire circus went dead silent before breaking out into deafening applause and cheering.
Holy cow!! That was amazing!!!! Monty jumped up and down and cheered before whipping over to his sister.
"Did you see that?????? That guy was like a superhero!!"

The two women swung down to the arena floor to join Isaac and the other man—who was currently on his hands and knees, looking like he might vomit. Isaac remained seated beside the man, shooting a glare at the ringmaster when he suddenly said “Fear not, ladies and gentlemen, this was all part of our death-defying show. Every night is a new and amazing feat of speed, agility, and skill. Every night is a brand new thrill.”
The sickly acrobat gulped and looked over at Isaac, saying, “I-is he serious?”
Isaac tried so hard not to pinch the bridge of his nose, and he simply sighed, saying, “Yup. Hope you have health insurance, pal.”
The acrobats then stood together and took a bow as the ringmaster finished his speech, bidding the audience a wonderful night. Everybody cheered once more for the acrobats and the rest of the circus before filing out into the warm summer night.
The moment the show ended, Isaac rushed out of the tent. None of the other performers even saw him leave. He didn’t want to stay and hear thankyous or get any sort of praise, and he definitely didn’t want to hear about some bigger, better circus in the Middle Class. No, he just wanted out of there, and so he grabbed his bag, put his pants and jacket on over his tights, and booked it.
He stayed away from the crowd, too, choosing to make his way past the animal cages and the wagons to make his way home. But he was a little slow in doing so. As he went along, he rubbed his right shoulder. It stung with every movement, as he had come awfully close to dislocating it during that rescue. His whole body was tired, too, so he just walked calmly past the lion cages and toward a more remote spot of the park.
