Every word the man said made Dante’s head spin. It wasn’t even all that confusing, just vague and too philosophical for his already stressed brain. Dante looked down at the ground, his mouth open, his brow tense, trying to make sense of the robed man’s words.
“But you…” he muttered, looking back up into those hard, burgundy eyes. “You only answered some of my questions.” That, according to the other officers, was also a clear sign of a liar. If this man was honestly trying to help, he should have said his intentions clearly. “How is this going to help anybody? And if it is some kind of cure, why did you have to trade it like that? Why not give it to a doctor?”
Dante was getting a worse and worse feeling about this. The man stepped closer, and Dante backed up, his body tense. He bent his knees and hunched his back again, allowing the man to tower over him more and more.
The man’s words kept passing right through Dante’s head, leaving his mind swirled and dizzy. And when he made his demand, Dante’s heart pumped hard, and he said with a look of regret, “… I can’t.”
Sirens wailed and lights flashed through the alley. Dante snapped his eyes to the right, staring out into the street as cop cars raced by, one after another. Then, their tiles screeched across the pavement, and they drove backwards, returning to the alley. Dante’s eyes spread wide in the bright headlights of three cruisers. This wasn’t good.
“Don’t kill them!” he shouted to the robed man, pleading for him to run away. His eyes then snapped to the man’s stick. That was his weapon. That’s what took down the guns. Dante flew on instinct. He lunged for the man’s staff, trying to grab it and take it from him, to keep him from hurting anyone.

The boy was frustratingly naive. Like a real doctor cared about the slums. No, only illegal back-room doctors such as him even bothered to help the people of the slums, considering many were criminals out of necessity. And what of the scavengers? Those who chose not to be a part of the twisted, controlling system?
"You... are naive. You wonder why some choose to work outside of the system, when the same system is responsible for their suffering."
Was that fear he saw in the boy's eyes? Desperation? Whatever it was, the boy seemed conflicted... until the sirens began to wail. Vaina understood why the boy grabbed his staff. He understood that he probably valued the lives of his comrades. Some might even be good people. But he was not about to be killed or taken prisoner by those monsters. He was far too valuable to the people. Yet... he couldn't escape while the boy held on. His body was too light to make his normal leaps with so much extra weight hanging on. Only one option was left to him, for now.
"This won't kill you."
With that, he bared the talons on his free hand, quickly kneeling and aiming to pierce the boy's neck with them. His body could produce venom. Neurotoxins, to be specific. His fangs and talons could administer the venom, and it could be fatal. But a small amount, just enough to paralyze him, shouldn't be lethal. He just had to get this boy off quickly... by any means necessary.
He would rather not have to kill.

Why wasn’t the man letting go? Dante managed to get both hands on the staff, but the man didn’t give it up. All Dante wanted was to make the man run away, to make him give up the staff and live without having to hurt anyone. But all Dante managed to do was push the man to do something drastic.
Dante gasped when he saw the man’s fingers thrust out for his throat. He jerked back, tugging on the staff, trying to get away. But the man didn’t give an inch, and Dante had no choice. He let go of the staff and raised her arms to try and shield his throat. The man’s sharp talons cut Dante’s jacket and scratched his skin. Dante fell backwards to avoid getting skewered, and he smacked down against the concrete with a grunt.
And right away, he felt his body spark with pain.
“Nngh! Aaaagh!” Dante writhed on the ground, his arm burning and jolting, pain surging out from the cut as the venom rushed into his bloodstream. There probably weren’t many people who could overcome venom, anyway, but Dante’s weak immune system didn’t even put up a fight. He simply gasped and cried as he felt his entire body seize up and shiver. His eyes went blurry, his head swirled, his breathing turned short and ragged, and his body jolted again and again as Dante whimpered, “I-Isaac… Help me… Help me.”
Officers ran over him, giving chase to the robed man. Four went by, and the last two knelt down around Dante. He couldn’t hear what they were saying. The sirens overwhelmed his ears, and soon those noises went muffled as he drifted into darkness, his body shutting down. Tears rolled down his face as he whispered his brother’s name once more, and he blacked out.

...A cleaner blow might have just knocked the boy out immediately. He didn't intend to cause him such pain. Vainamoina felt a pang of regret as soon as the boy began screaming. Still... the police were coming. He couldn't get away with an extra person on board. And... the staff was too important of a piece of technology to lose. If he had the time, he would perhaps take the boy along with him and treat the venom. His body could produce the antivenom in moments. It was truly a shame. As the officers came running, Vaina held out his staff threateningly before saying just one thing.
"...King Cobra. Give him the antivenom."
Not that it would placate them. Still, it gave him peace of mind ot know he did what he could to help. This could have all been avoided if the police minded their own business. He uttered one more thing, a sort of closure. Not loud enough for the police to hear... and he doubted the boy could hear with his screaming and crying. Still, it had to be said.
"...I'm sorry."
With that, Vaina immediately leaped into the wall of the nearest building, springing off of it and onto the rooftops. Rather than run, he fled making long jumps, like some kind of mutant frog. Despite how big and bulky he looked with the robes, he was deceptively fast and light. He kept a lookout behind him, deftly avoiding the gunshots and whatever else they would throw at him. He just had to lose the tail and make it back to the slums without being followed. By now, his slippery bald friend had escaped, he was sure. Lives had been saved. He would give him the faulty ports for free, payment for his troubles. After all, he wasn't out for money or other selfish reasons. He only wanted to help.
It was regrettable that he came to blows with the young officer. He seemed like a good person.
