(might as well register this, it adds culture to the city lol)
Name of Business: Canaan, named so for the “promised land” in Biblical texts
Purpose of Business: A free basic health care clinic aimed at those living in the slums, but offered to any who need or desire it. As stated, treatment is free, even if a patient is unable to pay for anything at all. Vigilantes, Scavengers, normal Civilians, and even police and government workers can find help here. While the doctors cannot perform elaborate surgeries, most wounds and ailments can be alleviated.
Location: Southeastern end of the Slums District area, away from most major traffic
Layout Description: A two-story building, rickety and worn from years of use and poor upkeep. It does have running water and sparse electricity for the lighting, but is usually dim in areas of the clinic where it’s not as needed. The entirety of the building is built with cheap tin and metal. It often leaks during the rains and creaks with every footstep. For now, it’s stable enough.
The first floor is one huge room sectioned off by large curtains for each “check up room.” The number of separations vary depending on demand, but each have their own tables and chairs. The very back of the first floor leads to a bathroom, an area for sanitation, and storage space for equipment and medicines. There are only two windows on this floor, and both can be found on either side of the entrance. They’re boarded up to prevent entry and break ins.
A set of stairs leads to the second story, where there are windows with curtains to allow natural light inside. The second floor consists of one giant open room, with beds for patients. Those that must be bedridden are kept on this floor for rest and observation. In the back of the second floor contains an area sectioned off for special cases. In the event there’s a messy procedure that needs to be performed, a patient will be taken there. It has a surgical table and much more space to move around in than the check up rooms on the first level.
Other: Though the clinic takes in Vigilantes and Scavengers, they do not harbor them. Criminals looking for sanctuary cannot find it here. The clinic doesn't make it known that these types are welcome, hence most illegal clients tend to be walk-ins with no other options. Due to the nature of not turning anyone away, what would normally be banned elsewhere will slip through on occasion at Canaan. Police cooperation for criminals on the run is a must to avoid incidents and the misconception of open alliances with the underground. The small team of doctors that work in the clinic all go under an alias for protection, partially for this reason. The running theme for these fake names is usually based on famous walled cities of antiquity (hence “Nineveh” for Levenin). Though not required, doctors are encouraged to wear a special cloak/hood to conceal their faces, as well as to protect their clothing from spills. Since the clinic does not charge for services, it is entirely run on donations. Whatever is leftover after covering costs is split among the workers.
