The lower district marketplace was as lively as always. Merchants standing tall and shouting over crowds announcing their latest deals, traders exchanging goods, and people trying to bargain. It was always an area booming with activity at high noon.
Bijou was there doing some of her own shopping that day. She timidly made her way through the crowded plaza with a basket in hand and browsed through stands. She bought a few items for dinner and some home necessities. With a quick check of her shopping list, it seemed like Bijou was able to buy everything she needed quickly this time. She was getting ready to head home when two children chasing each other bumped into a merchant's table. As the two kids ran off Bijou noticed a metal plate fell off the merchant table and went rolling down the street.
"Oh!" Bijou went after the plate and grabbed it before it rolled away too far. She carefully examined it for damage when she heard an angry older woman's voice over the crowd.
"She's the one! Grab her!" Before Bijou knew it a heavy young man wrenched her by the arm and dragged her back to the merchant table. Bijou yelped from surprised and the pain in her arm from sudden jerked motion. People surrounding the immediate area fell into confused chatter as they watched the scene. The young man was apparently the son of the angry woman who gave Bijou a harsh glare. "Bet you thought you could steal from me with those kids roughhousing, huh? You wench."
"S-Steal...?" Bijou eyes fluttered in confusion then looked at the plate in her hand. She quickly realize the confusion and tried to explain herself. "N-No, I didn't steal anything, m-ma'am. This plate fell from your table and I-I was-"
"Don't play innocent. It's always you pretty girls stealing stuff around here. I'm sick of it!" The woman order her son to bring Bijou closer to her. She snatched the plate from Bijou's hands as she tried to explain herself again without being heard. "You know, I'm going to teach you a lesson. Make an example out of you. Maybe we'll get less thieves around here if they see one of their own missing a hand or two." The woman commanded her son to hold Bijou's arm down then went to fetch a blade as the crowd roared in a mixture of dread and excitement and Bijou desperately tried to explain the misunderstanding again.
