The year is 2864 on Earth.
A planet once filled with life, ravaged by war– left scarred and broken by those who came before. Advancements in technology had made short work of the planet: turning lush forests and vast oceans into wastelands of sand and ash, poisoning the atmosphere, and limiting the ability to produce food and drinking water. The atmosphere had been ripped apart, radiation spilling into the rivers and oceans, life nearly snuffed out. Tired of the wars, tired of the toxicity that poisoned their lives, a few survivors gathered together to create a peaceful utopia free of the destruction their fellows had wrought. They left their predecessors to their death in the heated wastelands; punishment for what they had done to the Earth.
Over centuries, their first city, Novus, expanded outwards. Centers of population once again rose across the planet, connected by black-out tram systems to protect the citizens within from the now lethal light of the planet's star. Domes encompass each city to protect them from the light as well, artificial weather created daily by the government. Cities are divided into sections, strictly enforced with scans of neural implants to maintain the population and class in each area– for their protection.
A ranking system categorizes all classes within Novus, a code stored in the neural implants of every citizen of the world. All citizens of Novus are given a neutral rank until they reach the age of 16, at which point they must test and see where their lives may truly begin. Depending on the results, a child may be sent towards the high reaches of a city, or down into the slums where they must fight for even scraps of food.
Population ended up as a delicate balance to maintain, birth rates controlled. A set number of people could only populate each area of a city, to maintain resources and life.
Everything is for their protection. Order maintained for survival.
Or at least, that's what they're told.
Will you fight to maintain order? To keep the cities and citizens safe from themselves, forever shielded from the outside world and the violence within it.
Will you claw your way towards freedom? Tear down the oppression and spread your wings towards the sunlight, bringing all others - willing or no - with you.
Do you choose to accept the city around you? To take the world at face value and enjoy everything it has to offer.
Or do you choose to abandon the fight completely, living as a Scavenger in the streets of Novus. Free of surveillance, but at the cost of comfort and the life of a criminal.
This is re:DUX. And the future is in your hands.
