Isaac’s hand stung as his knuckles collided with bone. He winced at the pain, wondering if he’d broken anything. There was a reason fighting wasn’t a regular thing with him.
A sharp pain struck Isaac’s right calf, and the world swept in front of him before the concrete tore into his knee. The man’s kick had hit home, but Isaac tumbled and rolled forward, putting some distance between him and the thug before he bounced to his feet. His fighting was crude, deceptive, and brutal, but his acrobatics were smooth and elegant. In the middle of his roll, he had scooped up a handful of pebbles and dirt, which he squeezed tight in his fist, hopefully keeping them hidden from his opponent.
Isaac hopped around on the balls of his feet, his fists raised, his back to the kid, his eyes on the thug. He tried to look like he was okay by hopping, but he didn’t put much weight on his right leg, which still stung around the back of his knee.
Moving left and right, he tried to psyche out the thug, to put him on edge for where Isaac would attack from next. It wasn’t the greatest plan, though, as Isaac only had one choice. He lunged forward onto his left, uninjured leg, and he swung out his right fist from about two meters away. As he swung, he opened his hand and let loose a spray of concrete pebbles. The stones sailed for the man, all sporadic in their aim, but all Isaac needed was a distraction. He ran to the left, darting for a crate near the man. Isaac jumped onto the crate and kicked off, now flying for the thug, aiming a sweeping kick at the man’s upper body.

The momentum from Tai lunging forward and lashing out with his foot ended up with him turning on his heel and tensing in preparation of another blow, only to watch the other man recover swiftly from the blow to his knee, smoothly turning his fall into a roll that led him to be closer to the kid than Tai would have liked. The kid also looked far too ready to run than Tai would have liked and another snarl bubbled up out of his throat as the realization that if the kid ran, there was a good chance that he wouldn't eat this week sank in.
The other man bounced on the balls of his feet, as though he were either absolutely eager for a fight or that he was injured enough that he was having trouble putting weight on the leg Tai had connected with. Tai really hoped it was the second one. Tai tensed himself as the other man bounced back and forth, obviously trying to psyche Tai out. Tai merely tensed further, readying himself for whichever way the other man lunged.
He was not expecting the pebbles that the other man threw at his face, and had no idea where the other man had gotten them from. But they served their purpose, distracting Tai from the movements of the other man, leaving Tai unprepared when the other man somehow managed to kick him in the chest. Tai fell to the ground, the air knocked out of him and desperately scrabbled for one of the rusty pipes laying on the ground, swinging it wildly and praying it connected. As he did, he scrambled back to his feet as quickly as he could. Being on the ground was bad, he nearly lost an eye the last time he got knocked down.

Isaac landed from his kick as best he could, and he watched the thug tumble, grab a pipe, and swing wildly. Every swing hit nothing but air as Isaac remained just out of range, even taking a step back to make sure none of those blind swings hit him. The thug could at least take solace in knowing he could climb to his feet without any trouble. And now, he had a weapon.
Isaac glanced down at the ground. All of the pipes were by the thug’s feet. If Isaac was going to grab one of his own, he would have to get in range, make himself vulnerable to an attack. For now, he just backed away and circled around the man, placing himself between the thug and the kid. His eyes remained forward, but he shouted back to the boy, “Did the guy rattle your head or were you just born stupid? Get out of here!”
The kid’s voice cracked as he called back, “B-but I can’t. I still need to wait for my contact. I’ll get in trouble if I don’t—”
“Your contact isn’t coming. If he hears this fight, he’s gonna turn tail and leave. That’s how this works. You’ll be in more trouble if you don’t get the hell out of here right fucking now.” A whimper of protest came from the boy, but Isaac shot it back down with a snarl. “Do I have to throw your ass home myself? Go!”
Finally, Isaac heard the tapping of shoes on pavement as the boy started to move. The steps weren’t that quick, though, and there was an odd rhythm to them. Isaac didn’t look back, but he could tell from the pattern that the boy was limping. Somehow, his leg was injured. Whether that limp had come from the kid’s heist or the thug’s shakedown, Isaac couldn’t tell, but he gritted his teeth nonetheless.

Tai came back to his feet, whirled to face the other man, and immediately swore because his mark was getting away due to the other man's interference. Fuck. As much as Tai would have loved to continue this fight, he could not let the kid get away. But the other man stood between him and the escaping kid. At least the kid was limping, meaning that with luck, Tai would be able to get him before he got too far. Of course, he'd been having a ton of bad luck lately, so it was unlikely that things would be that easy.
If he had any Magix on him, this whole thing would have been a lot easier. But he'd had to choose between food and Magix lately, and as much fun as setting other people on fire was, eating was better.
Gritting his teeth, Tai quickly weighed his options. He could stay here, continue this fight, possibly losing and getting the crap beat out of him and not get paid. Or he could try to end this fight and try to keep the kid from escaping, again with the possibility of losing and not getting paid, but hopefully a smaller chance. So really, it wasn't much of a choice.
Swearing under his breath, Tai darted past the other man, swinging the pipe out low as he did so in the hopes of connecting with the knees again to keep the other man from interfering further. Whether or not he connected didn't really matter as Tai tackled the kid and bodily slammed him against the ground, hitting him once in the ribs with the hand holding the pipe for good measure, ignoring the twinge of conscience as the kid gave an anguished whimper. “Stay here or it'll be worse for ya,” he growled before scrambling off the kid to face the other man again, pipe held at the ready.

If Isaac had actually bothered to look back at the kid, the thug probably would have hit him. But when the pipe swung out, Isaac jumped back, avoiding the blow. He didn't, however, land on his good foot. Isaac naturally landed with his weight on both feet, causing his sore calf to ache with pain. He groaned and winced, but the pain wasn't crippling.
The thug sprinted for the kid and tackled him to the ground. Isaac could have stopped him, could have given chase and at least tried to cut the man off, but instead he made use of his little break. He grabbed one of the pipes now that he was free to do so, and only then did he charge after the man.
Isaac closed in and brought the pipe behind his right shoulder. With a firm swing and a hard grunt, he aimed to strike the thug's back.

Tai hadn't seen the other man pick up a pipe and therefore was not expecting to be hit by it. The strike forced all the air out of Tai's lungs once more, sending him staggering to the ground again. He rolled off the kid and planted the end of his pipe in the ground, using it as a lever to push himself back up, bringing the pipe up to bear as soon as he was close to upright.
Once he got away from this, his back was going to be a mass of bruising. If he walked away from this. At least the kid was staying put, curled up on himself, sobbing quietly. Part of Tai honestly felt bad about that, he'd been in the kid's shoes and knew just how much it sucked. But he pushed that part down; he cared about having enough money to eat far more than he cared about the kid. Besides, it was part of this life. You get the crap beat out of you and try not to have it happen again, if the kid couldn't cope with that, then maybe he wasn't cut out for this kind of life.
Tai waited for the other man to make a move, trying to catch his breath as he did.

Isaac stood in front of the kid when the thug tumbled away. He watched the man recover and regain his breath, but that was all he did. He didn't make another move toward the man or attempt to hit him while he was recovering. All he did was wait by the kid, hoping the little idiot would stop crying and start running.
But… now that Isaac thought of it, what would happen next? What if the kid did manage to get away? Would Isaac follow him back home to make sure he got there okay? Probably not. The kid looked like he was from the Middle or Upper class, yet somehow he had gotten involved in theft. Isaac couldn't risk taking him home. And if by some miracle the kid got home safely, would he stop doing what he was doing? Would he be allowed to? Or would he end up down here again on a day when Isaac wasn't around to save him?
It would be better to just kill this man now, cave his head in with the pipe and keep the kid safe.
Isaac clenched down tighter on his pipe, crunching the chips of rust until they floated down around his hand. His chest rose and fell with deep breaths, and his face tensed up.
After a moment, he relaxed his hand and asked the man, "You done yet?"

“Depends, you done bein' an arse and gonna piss off?” Tai lowered the pipe slightly, waiting to see what the other man's response was going to be. Maybe, just maybe, the other man would finally realise that there was no good reason for him to have gotten himself involved in this and leave. It wasn't like his involvement was going to change all that much anyways. The kid had already been beaten and was still curled up on the damp pavement in a ball, crying. All Tai really needed was the object the kid stole, whatever it was, and he'd be fine with leaving the kid alone. Long as he got paid he couldn't give two shits about what happened to the kid in the end.
But the other man may not necessarily let him walk away.
“Or do ya wanna continue this?” Tai snapped the pole back up and shifted his weight, trying to give the impression that he could keep this fight and didn't want to just get paid and go home.

“Frankly, no.” Isaac wasn’t afraid of the thug, not with the way the fight had been going. Although, he had to admit that his leg still hurt, and it was only getting worse. He tried not to make it obvious that he was putting all of his weight on his good leg, but there was little he could do. At least his baggy pants hid the twitch in his leg.
Isaac put his pipe down, letting it clatter against the ground, but he was confident that he could pick it back up and guard if the man tried to rush him. Even as he raised his hands and showed his empty palms to the man, Isaac remained calm and confident, saying, “I’ll bet you have your own reasons for doing what you’re doing, but I don’t want to hear ‘em. All I want to know is what it’ll take for you to leave this kid alone.” As much as Isaac would rather just beat this guy into submission, he knew the kid would suffer more. Maybe there was nothing Isaac could have done or ever could do to change that fact, but maybe a deal would be his best shot.
Isaac then pointed down to the pipe and said, “Give me an answer I like, and I won’t have to pick that back up.”

Tai watched the other man let his pipe fall and tried to keep the surprise off his face. And the relief- this fight was not going well and Tai wasn't blinded enough by pride to even begin to pretend otherwise. Despite his feelings, he did not let go of his pipe, but simply lowered it again, prepared to continue the fight if he had to.
“Simple. All I need is what the kid stole,” he paused, then almost as an afterthought added. “Don't give a rat's arse what happens to him after that. Take him home or slit his throat; don't make no difference to me.” Tai knew that he probably shouldn't be quite that rude, but he was tired and all he wanted to do was go home. Besides, for all he knew the other man had some purpose for the kid. Whatever. As long as he got paid he wouldn't care.
“That a good enough answer for ya?”
