Work "Thank you for your purchase, please come again."
Rachael smiled politely at the couple as she wraps up their books, slipping two bookmarks into the thin bag before neatly taping it shut and hand it to them. It's not the first time they've come to the store, but it's the first time she'd given them the bookmarks. They probably didn't notice. From what she'd seen of the other books they occasionally brought into the store, they're more prone to dog-earing the pages anyways. It's an almost painful sight, considering how expensive and rare paper books are nowadays. But once they've transferred the credits to her, it's not her problem anymore. Unfortunately she couldn't apply that same policy to the couple themselves. They're Vigilantes, after all.
Well, suspected Vigilantes at least. Not something she could exactly guess from their book selection--usually cheesy romances and stereotypical adventures novels ( she supposed these types of books should consider themselves lucky. If they hadn't somehow survived the tests of time as paper merchandise, she doubted they would be worth anything at all ), but their recent online activity and the bits of audio picked up during the searches had been...concerning, to say the least. Their name had appeared on the list of those needing further investigation, and Rachael had claimed them upon recognizing their names. But it was silly to spend time tailing them herself when there was no confirmed evidence yet. So she'd given them bookmarks.
As she tended to the customers after them, the soft crinkle of paper and plastic feeds into her ear, accompanied by the muffled voices of the two who had just left. They're already talking about their plans for the night, soft laughter and music from the surroundings all coming back to Rachael from the small rectangular slip they carry with them. They sounded happy. She'd hope that the charges against them were false, but she'd long since learned how little good that did for anyone. Hope didn't change a criminal's actions, and it didn't help when the almost always inevitable arrest came. But for now, she helped her other customers, listening to the suspected couple's conversation while offering them the same kind smiles.
It was only two hours or so later when the sweet nothings she'd been listening to for the better part of an hour subsided, replaced by hushed whispers of a different sort. Rachael excused herself from the store for a moment, slipping into the back room and running a check on their NUIPs. No signal. Not entirely suspicious, if you were just doing a random search. But she knew these too better, didn't she? Clearly they'd never thought to check for any other devices that might need disabling. As they began speaking of raids and potential bombings, Rachael wondered idly how long they'd been doing this for. Anyone with experience would know better than to be so careless. So then they must be relatively new...Ah. She frowned. She really hoped they hadn't gotten these ideas from the adventure books she sold them. Cheesy as the genre could be, she really had no desire for it to be banned or censored even further. Well, perhaps she could leave those details out of her report. For now, she flagged the two in her notes as dangerous, setting aside part of her schedule for the night to proceed with their arrest. She'd have to close the shop down a tad early, but it wasn't a very busy day anyways.
Now that she had her evidence, Rachael turned down the volume on her feed slightly. It wouldn't do to mute them entirely, but now she could focus more on the customers that she did still have. She moved around the store, offering advice and price estimates to those who asked, and cleanly packaging the purchases that others made. Occasionally, she would slip a bookmark inside.
Decided to do a little drabble about Rach's bookstore/Secret Police work /o/ still trying to figure out how exactly i want to write her here, so hopefully that helped me a bit :'v
