Some people might say a desk does not make for a comfortable bed. Though true in many cases, a slum dog might find a desk as comforting as a queen-sized mattress. Dante leaned forward in his office chair, his head nestled in his arms, propped up on his cold metal desk. His elbow rested on his keyboard, adding about ten thousand spaces and counting to his latest report.
In the darkness of his eye lids, Dante remained suspended in a fragile slumber. He could still feel every sway of his body as he started to drift deeper into sleep, still feel his brain slosh like water as he moved his head around in his arms. But when he tilted his head to the side, the world suddenly collapsed beneath him. His desk vanished. He became weightless and rocked down into the darkness. His heart leaped and his body jolted. Dante smacked his hands against his desk and violently snapped up in his seat. His heart pounded as he looked around, seeing his desk, his keyboard, his computer. With a sigh, he calmed down from that spook. He had no idea where the term “falling to sleep” had come from, but he was pretty sure that wasn’t it.
But it wasn’t just the shock of actually falling asleep that had woken Dante up. There was a commotion in the office. People were all talking at once, more so than usual. There was murmuring coming from the cubicles nearby. Dante heard something about a “private eye” and a “hotshot.” Those were the only words he could catch, and they didn’t make much sense.
He rolled back in his seat and looked beyond his cubicle wall. On the other side of the office, in the briefing room, there was a rather large gathering of officers. Dante hadn’t seen anyone use that room before, but now there were entire teams in there, along with someone that really caught his attention.
Even from far away, Dante’s narrow, focused eyes could see a woman in the briefing room, a woman with orange hair and a stronger build than most men on the force. Her clean but rugged face, along with her clear lack of a uniform made her stand out from the other officers. Dante simply watched her move around the briefing room, wondering who she was and why she was here.

There hadn’t been many reasons to step foot into Lower Class in quite some time. Of course, Kendra did occasionally go there when undercover to gather information – but as of late all she could really think about had been the issues with Samuel and the security threats surrounding recent thefts in Middle Class. Most of her days had been spent handling her cover jobs, but to suddenly get a notice from HQ about an ongoing investigation that needed a hand… It felt suspicious. And she snatched the assignment up without a second thought.
The gossip was obvious once she stepped foot into the building, eyes turned towards her small stature and the serious air around her. It wasn’t anything she wasn’t used to, and she ignored the mutters while moving back towards the meeting room to discuss the issues that had arisen. Once the door clicked shut, she began to speak.
“As I’m sure you’ve all been briefed on the matter to some extent, you understand the delicacy of this situation and how little time we have to prepare.” She said in a solid voice while reaching into her coat and pulling out a small metal sphere. Once set on the table, a blue holographic map spread across the table with three red marks. “At least one team will be set up at each location once they’ve been selected. I’ll leave to your discretion who attends each. My position will be here–” She pointed at a mark on the far right of the map. Once more she reached into her coat and pulled out a small information stick to set next to the sphere.
“Brief yourself on the information more in depth with this so you understand things more thoroughly. I’ll be moving around your office for the next hour or two so as to assess the condition of your officers, as well as those in training. While the chances of confrontation is high, it’s also an excellent learning opportunity for any juniors that might be interested in more in-depth work and what it involves. Talk amongst yourselves for who might be up to the task while reviewing the data.”
Her eyes moved between those gathered, surprised none of them had spoken out. What all they had been told, she wasn’t sure. Though finding out was just a phone call away. She nodded to them before stepping back from them, only turning once she was at the door and exiting to do her rounds just as she had intended. While she would have loved to let out a sigh and relax a bit, it wasn’t the time. Even more so as her piercing gaze scanned over and made eye contact with those that seemed to be watching her.
“Hello there, everyone. My name is Kendra Saunders, and we’ll be working together for a short amount of time. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I’ll answer to the best of my ability.” She gave a smile, waving to let them know to get back to work if they so chose. Her nose itched at the whole situation. It reminded her too much of the weapons raid she had stumbled upon as a kid. Well, hopefully no children would be caught up in the problems this time.

“Whoa,” said Dante, his eyes fixated on the woman’s blue hologram. He couldn’t hear anything she was saying, but the way she carried herself looked impressive. Dante simply watched her, imagining what she was explaining to the other officers. The map was of a city block, so maybe she was talking about a mission person’s last location, or maybe couple of drug dens.
After staring for a long time, Dante looked to one of his neighbors, asking, “Hey, d’you know who she i—”
The words barely left his mouth before the woman stepped out of the briefing room, smiled to everyone in the office, and introduced herself. Dante watched her, listening closely. She made it sound like not everyone knew who she was or why she was here. When Dante looked around, people gave a mix of responses to the woman. Most turned their heads away and returned to their work, and a few of them made angry or disgusted expressions when Miss Saunders wasn’t looking. Others faced her, but they didn’t speak up. The silence gripped Dante, but it seemed like he wasn’t the only ignorant person here. He took a shot and raised his hand, asking, “Excuse me, ma’am? Umm… What exactly are we working on together?”
Eyes suddenly fell on Dante when he spoke. He looked around to see the others watching him. Dante’s cheeks turned red, and he worried that he had missed a memo. Gulping, he continued, “I-I uhh… I just want to be clear that it’s one thing and not—like—another, you know? Does that make sense?”

Well, Kendra hadn't exactly been expecting a warm welcome from the station. Having a new person suddenly come in and take over for an operation rarely sat well with most people. Typically it involved egos being bruised, which she could fully understand. But it wasn't the best time for people to let the chain of command become an issue.
Honestly speaking, she didn't think anyone would speak up or take the time to actually acknowledge her. Which was fine, of course. Working alone came with the job - but there was one boy that seemed curious enough to speak up and question things. Good. That was always good. A small closed lip smiled spread across her face as she moved over towards him, each step full of confidence and unaffected by the stares.
"It makes perfect sense, don't worry." She said with a small laugh, hopefully making the boy feel more comfortable. Even though he was clearly taller than her, the difference in experience and age between then could be noticed at a glance. "There's been a tip involving a dangerous smuggling ring I've been tracking for the past few weeks. Unfortunately, I'm in need of a bit more man power than just myself, so that's where you guys come in. The short of the situation is that it's up to us to stop the illegal activities and get everything back to business as usual. We think they're using children to smuggle illegal magic and weapons mods that could knock out power for multiple blocks of the city, as well as destroy buildings. So it's a bit of a time crunch."
Her eyes cast over the area, looking towards anyone that might have been listening or suspicious. Even within the precinct, the possibility of a leak couldn't be ignored. Her eyes snapped back to him, offering a smile once more.
"Were you hoping to go into the field with us?"

The woman’s smile and her small size—notable even while Dante remained seated—did manage to put him at ease. His lips rose into the faintest smile, only to drop and slowly open as the woman spoke. This was… big. This was huge. This wasn’t just a manhunt or a drug bust. This was a raid.
Dante looked down for a moment, taking everything in. He had seen some incredible things during his first few months on the force, and he had come close to death once already. A bit operation like this… it was on a whole other level. Maybe Dante was overthinking it. Maybe it wasn’t going to be this big shootout. Maybe it would be something smaller.
But did that matter?
They’re using kids? he asked in his mind, stunned by the thought of it. What sort of monster uses kids for crime? Dante slowly curled his hand, his arm tensing up as he clenched his fist. He didn’t look angry, still just confused. But very quickly, his face turned hard, determined. Rising from his seat, Dante stood tall in front of the woman. Officer Damon wasn't here to stop him, to keep him from putting himself in danger, and no one spoke against him.
“I would,” he finally answered, his voice level and unusually confident. “I’m Junior Officer Dante Vasari. I may be young, but I scored a 92 in Marksmanship during my Test. Please, let me help.”

It wasn’t difficult to notice him relaxing to an extent from her smile. Though her information was far from anything comforting – and watching his expression change reminded her of how she had been back during her younger years. He couldn’t have been older than 16 or 17 from how his cheeks looked more filled out than a fully grown man. Even if he was an adult by the standards of Novus, he was still practically a kid.
“A 92? Not bad for someone so young. Let’s see if we can get it up to a 96, shall we?” She grinned up at Dante and offer her hand to him. “I introduced myself before, but that was a bit less personal. Kendra Saunders, internal affairs and private investigation. It’s nice to formally meet you, Junior Officer Vasari. I’ll take you into my team for the day, if it suits you. You’ve got determination. I like that. It’s a good mark for officers starting out.”
A smile spread across her face, touching her eyes. If the kid was going, he’d be safest by her side. Not that she meant to discount the precincts officers skills, of course, but she knew the patterns for their target enough to keep him safe. And potentially teach him a few tricks. The last thing anyone needed was having the poor thing caught up in a mess he couldn’t get out of.
“We can go over plans with the rest of our team shortly. Just make sure you’re stocked and ready. And feel free to follow me while I see if anyone else wants to join.” Another grin and a nod, letting Dante know she was dismissing herself to observe others. If anyone wanted to take on the assignment and earn a bit of credit, she couldn’t blame them. A raid didn’t come along everyday, after all.

Kendra's smile comforted Dante, and her praise filled him with pride. He wasn't sure if his score was all that impressive for an officer, but she seemed to like it.
"Thank you, ma'am," he said with a salute and a smile he couldn't hold back. He had no idea who she really was, but her title made her sound so skilled and superior. To even guess how many leagues above him she was seemed impossible. Even the older officers nearby seemed to look at her with envy in their eyes. The way she spoke, the way she stood, and even the way she walked as she moved around the office—it all made her seem untouchable. Dante stayed close to Kendra as she went around the office, gathering up any officers brave enough to join the raid.
Before long, Kendra had enough volunteers to make her three teams. The LCPD was far from the best place to get SWAT officers, and even less so get good equipment. Three vans rolled out from the station, each carrying teams of five officers equipped with Kevlar vests, shotguns, pistols, and about four riot shields. The station Dante worked out was undermanned and undersupplied. None of these officers even had bio shields, and there were only a small assortment of proper siege equipment.
In the back of the van, Dante inspected his pistol, his vision cloudy through his helmet's visor. His eyes glanced around, spotting Kendra, then the other three officers in their team. Their eyes were all on the floor, and a few of them clenched their fists to fight back shakes. A pair of them stole glances at Kendra, their eyes firm, looking as if they were judging Kendra. But why? Dante looked to her, and all he could feel was hopeful. He wore far more armor than he had ever before in his life, but it didn't make him feel as safe as he did when he looked to this woman.

"Of course. Keeping positive and constantly improving is one of the key things an officer needs in the field." The salute was very much appreciated, and Kendra gave him a solid nod to acknowledge him. After that, she walked around the office and observed various police members, the tension clear on some of their faces. Any sort of envy missed her gaze, just as many tried to avoid eye contact while she looked over. It was understandable, really. An unknown coming in and suddenly taking control. It could mean so many things, and rarely anything good.
Once everyone gathered and had been outfitted, they moved into the vans. The cramped space held more guns than most vehicles of a similar caliber, but that didn't mean much if they couldn't be wielded properly. While they moved, Kendra took the time to stand and adjust her own clothing, pulling the vest tight around her middle and cocking her gun while testing the sight. They were clearly nervous, save for Dante from what she could tell. He trusted her. Good. Things would go much more smoothly that way.
"When we move in, get to cover. It's very likely that we'll be fired on almost instantly. Watch your three for potential grenades and pipe bombs coming our way." She adjusted a knife at her side and crouched down once the van came to a rolling stop. Her gun was held high as she nodded to the group before kicking the door open and swiftly moving towards the right. Almost instantly the other teams began to move as well, the first ring of gunfire echoed through the air.
The crate she hid behind splintered while gunfire peppered the wood, her eyes scanning the area to make sure her team had made it to cover and followed her example. They needed to push forward and get inside before anyone got hurt.
