Sometimes Ellie really, really hated her life.
She liked to think that for all her killing, thefts, and violence, she was a decent enough person. She regularly donated to a clinic, for only a small level of personal gain; she even took in strays from time to time. Her work as a Vigilante was ultimately to help the city and make things better in the long run, that was something she wholeheartedly believed about herself.
But then sometimes her bank account dipped too low and she had to take jobs from some skeezy people.
Her client tonight was a kingpin wannabe sort who fixed himself with the title of 'Bone Daddy'. Barf. And she had been worried when she'd picked her vigilante moniker. He was an up and comer in the trade of the newest drug to sweep through Novus, Bone Dust, hence his stupid ass name. She didn't know much about the drug other than that it came from ground up bones of some black market spliced creature and that it was stupidly addictive. A few girls at the club she regularly visited had offered it to her but she found drugs tended to ruin her workout schedule for the following days.
There was a trade going down tonight and Mr. Bone needed some protection. As long as Ellie didn't ask questions, which was in her legal contract, and kept her back turned, she wasn't legally accountable for what went down. She was paid to keep her client safe as he met with a friend and she had no reason to suspect that he was up to anything nefarious, of course not. Unless she wasn't an idiot, but people were usually eager to believe someone in the low class was stupid.
Plus tomorrow she could have Lev call in a tip about where the guy was and collect the reward. Easy money and her conscious wouldn't take as much of a hit. Fun times for everyone.
"Area seems to be clear, boss." She called to him after checking out the alley they were supposed to meet his contact to make the trade. He disappeared down the alley with his personal guards, the ones on a more permanent payroll, while leaving her at the entrance. If shit went down, he'd call out and she'd come kick some ass.

So, the law was great and all, and being a cop was pretty cool sometimes, but it had some rules that just made Dante sad. For one thing, he couldn’t wear his headphones while on patrol. Okay, yes, that made sense, and it was kind of stupid of him to ask to do it, but wouldn’t music make things more exciting? Granted, he wouldn’t hear anything more than a gunshot, but if he got in a chase, how cool would chase music be?
And the second rule that bugged him was “no whistling.” Dante wasn’t even sure if that was a real rule, but Officer Damon had told him multiple times to cut it out—possibly because Dante whistled off-key, but hey, give a guy points for trying. Really, though, it was probably to be less obvious as he patrolled the streets.
Tonight, Dante strolled along the sidewalks of the Lower Class, checking alleyways, streets, and nearby parks for any wrongdoers, any ne’er-do… nur-do… nare-doo… that big fancy word for evil people. Though he caught himself humming a song every now and then, Dante did his best to stay inconspicuous. One never knows when they might stumble upon a crime scene, so it was best not to let the bad guys know you’re coming. But if that was true, then why was Dante walking around in his uniform? Wasn’t that going to tip people off?
All of these questions was starting to make his brain hurt.
Dante turned right down a street close to the edge of the district, near the dividing wall to the Slums. As he passed an alleyway, he saw a hooded woman with paint all over her face. Having seen stranger things in this city, Dante smiled to the woman and said, “Evening.” He kept walking, not at all suspicious of the way she stood stock still in the middle of the alley. That wasn’t weird, right?
“You think you can rip me off?! Fuck you, you piece of shit!”
A gunshot rang out, and Dante jumped. He followed the noise back to the alley with the hooded woman. Another gunshot went off, and another. Dante pulled his pistol off his belt and ran for the alley. When he neared the woman, he told her, “Ma’am, get to cover.” He then tried to move past her, still not realizing her part in all of this.

Ellie made a face when the cop passed her. Okay, so he was suuuuper bad at his job. And what was he, like twelve? Still she clenched her fists, feeling the slightest tremble in her muscles in the anticipation of a fight. Good thing Lev wasn't here; he had a tendency to fuck things up when cops were involved.
There was a yell followed by gunshots behind her and before she could react, the junior police force was back, telling her to take cover. Good god, he was an idiot; she could break him over her knee without even getting winded. So instead of taking cover, she followed behind him. He was the one with a gun, after all. She wasn't stupid.
Her client was on the ground, bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound to the arm. One of his guards was also on the ground though he appeared to be dead. Shame, he hadn't seemed too bad of a dude, for a drug runner. Oh well. The other guard was grappling with some guy she didn't know; her client's contact, she assumed. She shifted to get in front of her client, she was a bodyguard after all, and decided to see what the junior police would do.

When Dante reached the intersecting alleys and came upon the fight, he immediately stopped, pressed his back against the alley wall, and remained hidden. No one except the woman seemed to know he was there, and so he peered around the corner to see what was happening. He saw one dead man, another injured, and two struggling with each other.
It was strange, though: Given where everything was positioned, it seemed as if this was a three-on-one fight. The dead man was dressed similarly to one of the men grappling, and the wounded man seemed to hide behind said man. Was one man all alone here, or did he have other people with him, lurking?
Dante didn't have time to figure it out or even question it for more than a second. The two men eventually fell to the ground, where they twisted themselves up in a mess of limbs, trying to keep the other away from the handgun that was just out of reach.
One man—a plump, greasy-faced man who dressed so differently from the other three—managed to stretch out his fingers and grab the gun. And now, Dante could no longer observe and stay safe. He had to act.
Snapping around the corner, Dante fired his pistol, the bullet striking the greasy man's handgun and popping it out of his hand. The man yelled in surprise and looked down the alley. All eyes fell on Dante as he stood in full view, gun raised, his youthful voice trying to sound commanding as he said, "Freeze! LCPD."

Oh, he was adorable. It was like a puppy learned how to hold a gun.
Learned how to handle one too, if the way he disarmed the guy was any indication. She was actually a little impressed; she could barely aim a gun to save her life. A shot like that would be impossible for her. Maybe the pup wasn't completely helpless. She hoped she didn't have to kill him. He apparently didn't recognize her as Evrika, so that was a small blessing.
Seeing as how he seemed to have things mostly under control, she knelt to check out her client's wound. Through and through, not too bad. She was torn on whether to waste her Novigel on him or not. He wasn't likely to die from it, but if he did, then she wouldn't get the second half of her pay for the night. That's when she noticed the small package on the ground not too far from where the cop was standing. Was that the drugs?
Shit.

Dante kept himself on a pivot as he watched over the wounded man and the two that were still tangled together on the ground. He turned left and right, training his gun on everyone, hoping to keep them in line as he said, "Everyone, put your hands behind your heads and get on the ground… Um, well, more than you are now, that is—on your stomachs."
No one moved at first. The three men all just stared at him, not even flinching when Dante pointed his gun at them. Their faces looked so stunned, though. Maybe they really were intimidated by Dante's shooting. One could only hope.
A figure then rushed for the wounded man, and Dante nearly gasped when he saw the woman kneeling by the man's side. "Wait, what are you…" His voice trailed off as he noticed the bag of drugs on the ground, and he started to put it all together. No doubt he would be kicking himself later for being so stupid, but now wasn't the time. He had to focus.
"Ma'am, put your hands behind your head and get on your—" Footsteps echoed in the alley. Dante turned to see one of the brawling men charge straight for him, closing in fast. Dante gasped and acted purely on instinct, raising his gun and firing. The bullet whizzed past the man's head, and blood sprayed out from his ear. The man cried out and reached up to grab his wound, his eyes closed as he contorted in pain. Dante sidestepped the man and kicked at one of his legs, tripping the man up and sending him crashing to the ground. Blood kept rolling down the man's hands and onto the concrete, and Dante winced in sympathy. If he hadn't been taken by surprise, he would have just grazed the ear, not ripped off a chunk.
Another set of footsteps sounded, and Dante looked to see the greasy-haired man run the other way, fleeing down the alley.
"Hey!" shouted Dante. "Stop!" He fired a shot at the ground, but the man kept running, perhaps not even noticing how close the warning shot had come to his foot.
Dante raised his hand to his head, and anyone paying attention would see he was about to place a call—a call for backup. His eyes were so focused on the fleeing man, however, that he wouldn't notice anyone trying to stop his call.

Ellie was weighing her options; she really couldn't afford to get caught, not while in full Vigilante garb, but she'd rather avoid killing Junior over there for her shitty client. She didn't like killing people for just doing their jobs, not if she could help it. Luckily her client's contact seemed to want to make the choice for her. Not so lucky for him though, given the sight of his ear.
Note to self, get gear to better cover and protect ears. Yikes.
She saw the kid move to make the call for backup, something he honestly should've done before trying to break up a drug trade brawl, really, and acted quick. She jumped up and ran over, slamming into him hard enough to send them both tumbling to the side. The blow luckily knocked the gun out of his hand and sent it skittering across the concrete.
Scrambling to her feet, she moved to put herself between the cop and the gun, fists raised in preparation. "Get out of here. My fee's just been doubled." She called back to her injured client who was struggling to his feet with the help of his other henchman. Then her attention was back on the pup, "Junior, just walk away from this. It's not worth it."

The air flew from Dante's lungs, and the firm slam against the concrete tore into his uniform sleeve and cancelled his call before it could even start. His voice cracked in a weak whisper of a gasp when he saw his gun on the ground. His lungs felt tight, and his head spun, vision twisting in on itself for a single sickening second before it righted itself.
A pair of feet stamped down in his view, a few feet ahead of his gun. Dante looked up, spotting the scarred, rugged woman from before. The sounds of his own gasping breaths made it hard to hear her when she spoke to the two men behind her. But when she spoke directly to him, Dante heard every word, the firmness of her voice, the confidence.
Dante regained his breath and rose to his feet, a hand to the side of his head. His eyes flicked to the fleeing men disappearing down the alley, then his gun, then the woman. He gulped, and he tightened his face as best he tried his best to project his voice, to mirror the woman's confidence. "Ma'am, you are… getting in the way of justice. Stand down, now. I don't want to have to hurt you." Dante bent his knees and raised his hands, palms open and fingers curled slightly.
A frown flashed across his face for a split second before he slid forward. His body suddenly relaxed, becoming like water as he moved with swift fluidity, cartwheeling beside the woman, kicking with the heel of his foot in the middle of his full body swing. His foot aimed to strike the woman in her shoulder or her neck.

The kid was faster than he looked, that was for damn sure. She narrowly missed a foot to the face, jerking back and turning with his motion. Her arm went up to block and absorb the blow, shooting pain through her arm that she quickly ignored. Her other hand grabbed his leg and, using his own momentum, spun and shoved him away from her. She took a few sidesteps to remain between him and the gun.
"Last chance, Junior. This will not end well for you." She warned, shifting her weight between her feet.
If he wouldn't back down, she'd have to make him. He had speed on her and, if he got his hands on that gun, she was pretty sure he'd have a chance. But she had experience and muscle on him, and she had the feeling she was more willing to kill him than he her, if it came down to it. So, rolling her shoulders once, she raised her fists and darted for him. She ducked down a bit when she got closer, aiming her first punch at his ribs.

Dante's heart leaped when the woman grabbed his ankle and shoved him to the ground. Though he managed to catch himself, his feet smacking against the ground and keeping his back from a painful impact, his hands got torn up from the sudden twist across the rough concrete. Dante slid forward and spun around to face the woman. It was only now that he realized just how muscular she was. Her arms looked even bigger than Isaac's. Dante had never seen muscles so big before, let alone fought against them. The only people he'd gone up against had been weak, hungry bullies in the Slums.
A cold dread pulled on Dante's stomach as he stared at this woman.
His eyes flicked down to his gun. If he could get it, maybe he could scare her into surrendering. He gulped and tried to compose himself, saying, "Ma'am, this is your last warning, too. Stand do—"
But the woman rushed him before he could finish. Dante flinched once, then again as the woman's hook smashed into his ribs. Hot pain surged up his body, rippling out from his stomach and all the way to his neck and left leg. Dante bit back a yell, and he fell backwards with the punch, looking like he might go down from just one blow. But when his back hit the ground, he rolled back until he was on his shoulders, his feet rising up, aiming a kick at the woman's jaw.
Whether he hit or not, Dante then swept his legs to the side to get away before scrambling to his feet.
