Sometimes she really did wonder how he actually charmed people. His personality was like the underside of a boat that sat in the harbor for too long. She hated how calm and controlled he always seemed to be. Bullshit, is what it was. But complaining wouldn't do much to help the situation. "I'm sure you could find a fair amount of people interested in your tattoos. Though, yes I've noticed you seem to enjoy dark colors a tad bit. Blue and black in particular."
Once again, they were moving. Kendra fought off a sigh and moved into the room with Samuel, taking her position next to him while he looked around at the crowd. At the rate he was going, the entire time would be spent walking around.
"Intimate, huh? Must admit, I'm curious what type of dancing you'd do." The chances of him finding a partner were high, considering how much of a silver tongue he had. And, as usual, she would be sitting on the sidelines watching him spin about. Ah, well at least they'd part ways soon enough. She really wanted to do something fun for a change.

Odd that she'd say that, considering she'd been charmed when he hadn't even been trying. And he believed what she was feeling there was called jealousy. Just because she had no control over her life it didn't mean she had any reason to insult him for knowing what he was doing. "Most people are once they see them. But as you said, it makes it a bit hard to approach me at first depending on where I am." And well, at least they knew she wasn't colorblind.
Did she have any reason to be surprised? She wouldn't be here if this wasn't a trip for business. He walked smoothly across the room to check the door that people were coming from, smiling slightly when he saw that it was a smaller ballroom. Mirrors lined its edges, and there were some pairs dancing inside. Yes, this lounge was perfect. Not too many people, but there would be a decent enough amount of traffic from those coming in and leaving the smaller dance room. And it had a much more private feel to it overall, which he enjoyed. "I'm not sure why you would be, you've seen it before. Although I suppose it would be a bit different with a partner that actually knows what they're doing." She'd been far from an expert when they'd danced, after all.

Being charmed and disillusioning herself were two very different things. But no, jealousy was far from her thoughts when Samuel was concerned. If anything the lack of reactions simply bothered because he was harder to judge. Though she certainly knew how to piss him off. It was a gift, really. "How many do you have anyway?" It only made sense people would be interested in seeing more of them. With the fact he had them on his face and hands, it only made sense there would be more. He didn't much fit the whole 'scientist' stereotype with his physical appearance.
On the contrary, she would have been there even if not on business. Just not with him. Much as he enjoyed insulting her, she did have enough determination to actually start stepping outside of her comfort zone and exploring the world more. Ah, but his smile was all the indication she needed to know they had found a place to rest for some time.
"It's been years, Samuel. Style changes." She crossed her arms and leaned onto the wall, shooting him a slight look of annoyance. "And so does ability. Contrary to what you might believe, even I can grow. I can dance."

Were they, really? Well, that was her issue to figure out. And ah, he figured there was some envy there. She wished she was as hard to read, he was sure. But yes, congratulations to her for figuring out how to be irritating. He'd already given her one awards ceremony for it, but he didn't think she was so eager to have another. "Hard to say. I wouldn't call any of them individual tattoos exactly. You're awfully curious tonight though." Well, what did it matter what 'stereotypes' were? So long as you were capable, appearance and personality didn't matter much in this society.
And yes, he'd meant 'here' as in 'here as his bodyguard'. While he didn't think her so much a recluse as to not attend the city wide celebration at all, he simply doubted she would do it with any company. And really, how was she tired already? Weren't Secret Police members supposed to have more endurance than that? Oh dear, was she irritated? He raised a skeptical look at her comment about growing. Odd thing to say when she hadn't much. "Not satisfied with how you performed last time we danced, then? How often do you even have a partner to practice with? Mind you I'm not counting your instructors, since I'm assuming you pay them." And really, she was awfully full of questions about him tonight. Funny considering how much distaste she suddenly seemed to hold for him.

If he wanted to believe her clinging to him because he existed in her line of vision was the same as being charmed, let him. Not much she could do to change his mind, nor would he bend and think otherwise. And if that had been a reward, she wondered what a 'punishment' would be like. Ha, she might just try to fuck with him for their stupid bullshit trades and see exactly how far things could go.
"I guess a better question is how much of your skin is actually left." Though, had he never noticed she was curious by nature? If anything, it was one of her most outstanding traits. Next to being plagued with seriousness. "Does my supposed curiosity bother you?" Not that she much cared if it did or not. If he responded, she would as well. That was typically how a conversation went.
Did he honestly think she was actually tired? If so, he hadn't been paying much attention. But she hadn't expected him. No doubt he would turn this little bit into a narcissistic direction. "No, actually. I wasn't satisfied." She rarely was when failing. "And quite a few more than you might expect. Instructors are useful, but it's not quite the same as an actual partner." She shrugged. "Really though, payment doesn't make things count? I'll have to keep that in mind for future reference, Samuel."

Oh, so now she was acknowledging that? But it was a type of being charmed, either way. Depended on your definition of the word, he supposed. And that had been sarcasm. But really, there had to be a limit to her masochism. He didn't intend to heal her up again if she was intentionally seeking out injuries. "Hm..." Samuel pondered at her question. He knew the answer, but..."Generally, I like to keep them a surprise. So I'm afraid you'll have to use your imagination." Well, he had when she'd be inquiring about him pointless before. "It doesn't bother me, but you're hardly masking your displeasure with me. So I find it interesting you still wish to know about me." Perhaps the infatuation still wasn't quite over yet.
That must be a hard life for her to live. If Kendra was only satisfied when not failing, she must have been terribly unfulfilled most of the time. He shrugged somewhat. "Dancing with a paid teacher is somewhat different from finding a partner at a dance. A partner isn't going to stop and fix your mistakes, and it's not likely they know the moves perfectly either. I imagine you don't talk too intimately with your dance teachers either, which really does defy the entire purpose of a formal dance."

"A surprise. Interesting. Be awkward if they weren't well received." She wondered briefly why he didn't just give her an answer. It didn't really matter in the end, and it wasn't as if she would actually be seeing them any time soon - if ever. "Well, I'm glad the displeasure is at least noticeable enough that I don't need to fake pleasantries. But no. Imagine if you see a wreck or a murder and you can't look away because you want to know what's going on. It's similar to that." The infatuation was certainly not there any longer. Even more so if she thought her masochism went far enough to way him to beat her like before. Though she had no plans to allow him such an advantage again.
On the contrary, Kendra succeeded more often than she failed. For as big as Samuel would talk, he didn't know much about her actual life outside of their strained interactions. It made things easier to deal with his cocksure attitude. "I don't really think intimate exchanges are really needed for a formal dance. Just because you've got a partner doesn't mean you're trying to woo them instantly. Though, that's clearly a difference between the two of us."

"I can't say that's happened. Generally anyone who's alright with the face tattoos doesn't mind them anywhere else." And she had no need to know if she wasn't going to be intimate with him, was the answer. But given that, she was certainly correct that she most likely wouldn't ever know about them. "Oh is that what you were doing? I hadn't realized your acting skills were so awful." Perhaps she wasn't sure what pleasantries were? But as he'd said before he wasn't much fond of lying, so he cared little if she was being particularly rude to him. "And Kendra, if you're so desperate for that, I think you'd find it more so in a mirror than in me." And well, he didn't succeed the way he had because he let advantages be given to him. He was quite capable at making them himself.
Perhaps he didn't know, but he felt he was taking fairly educated guesses. 'Success' wasn't a set definition, but...well. Perhaps career-wise she had succeeded, but as far as her overall purpose in life went, he didn't think she was doing very well. "It doesn't have to be about seducing a person, you know. Intimacy comes in many forms. But I see little point in a close dance with someone unless decent conversation can be had. It's not as if I won't dance with people who I don't feel connected to, but..." He shrugged. "I wouldn't say any of those have been 'good' dances."

"Well, that gives a decent enough idea about the type of tattoos." Just because someone didn't mind the face tattoos didn't mean they would like the ones on his body. Who knew where all of them were. Maybe he had more on his head for all she knew. Though she didn't want to find out. "You wound me, Samuel. I like to think I'm quite skilled… When needed, at least." Honestly, her sarcasm seemed to coast over his head. Perhaps it was because of how they had interacted for the last month or so, or maybe because she had kept most of the snippy comments to herself.
A laugh left her at the mirror comment, her head turned towards him while she looked him over once. "I don't think you quite understood what I meant with that statement. I'm going to guess you were thinking of a tragedy. Quite rude, if so. You just complimented me from my perspective. Ah, but no. Those two things are fascinating. The moment everything snaps and just shatters away." Her hands rose, fingers uncurling quickly in a 'poof' motion. "You can't look away while the pieces fall." Her arms moved back down to cross over her chest. "Simple as that. It's fun to watch things burn."
Once more, her eyes moved to the crowd dancing while he spoke. Didn't much matter what he thought on her life. "So I'm guessing we couldn't have a 'good' dance then?" It was the first thought that popped into her head while she adjusted her stance. She did wonder what type he would consider a good dance. For someone that took so many to bed, he seemed quite the picky type.

"Shame you won't be able to confirm your theory." Well, it made sense for him to keep a general type of aesthetic for his tattoos. It'd be rather awkward if your body clashed with itself, after all. So if you liked the aesthetic of those on his face, there was a decent enough chance you'd like the ones on the rest of him as well. And if she had no interest in finding out, why ask in the first place? And there was some mistake here. He recognized her sarcasm well enough, but it was more entertaining to ignore it or take her words at face value. It generally set people a bit off kilter.
He watched with some bemusement as she went off into her little rant. Melodramatic tonight, wasn't she? Even bringing in some hand gestures to illustrate it all. When she finished, he merely shrugged his shoulders, looking back to the dance floor. "I think you've overextended the metaphor a bit too much, Kendra." No need to push it that far, now was there? An eyebrow raised at her question, though he didn't look back at her. "I suppose that would be up to you, Kendra. But why would you care, hm?" And really, was it so terrible for him to have the standard of enjoying the company of the people he wooed? He'd always thought that was the bare minimum requirement.
