"Thank you, thank you so much."
The woman lowered her hooded head in humility as the small crowd that had formed around to enjoy the lyre's lovely tune started to leave. This particular set only drove a single person to spare some change; long, slender fingers wrapped like a vise around the small pieces of plastic as they dropped onto her hands from a woman with a weathered face, the horns of a ram and a child on her hip who made sure not to touch her as the money changed hands.
Such a gesture was not lost on her, reminded her that in the dank, dingy streets leading to the slums even a dove couldn't be seen as little more than a common pigeon, a rat with wings that, while perhaps pretty, was likely dity and disease ridden... but the woman had been the first person to give her anything today, and for that she would be grateful. It meant she was closer to being able to eat today.
Not a lot closer, but closer she thought to herself as she checked how much she had been given, maybe she would have more luck if she headed towards the east side today. It had rained early that morning, so everything was cold and humid, dripping still, it'd been a good idea for her to bring a cloak, the dark polyester-like fabric covering her well from the top of her head down to mid thigh where it had a small pom pom trim, which bounced as she headed down the street.
The district was relatively busy today, not crowded yet with a fair amount of foot traffic, just enough for Lovely not to notice right away that two boys were walking a little too close at either side of her.
"Hey lady."
"Where are you going?"
"Wherever it is we can accompany you."
"You're all bundled up, what do ya got in there?"
She did not respond, her lips pressed in a thin line as she quickened her pace, which they matched with ease; the top of their heads reaching her shoulders, they had to be in their teens if they weren't still children, but still managed to exude a vaguely menacing vibe that did not quite match their seemingly curious, friendly demeanor. She knew what was going on, she'd already lived in the slums long enough to know when she was being mugged.
"Got anything on ya?"
"Pitifully little I'm afraid, hardly worth your time..." she said it in the softest voice she could manage, she wasn't lying.
"Let us be the judges of that, don't be difficult."
One boy jumped in front of her, forcing her to stop as the other stepped behind her, pressing something she imagined was a weapon to the small of her back. Now that she actually had a chance to look at one of them, she was certain that they were tweens, this one even still had pimples under his green, gappy bangs. Wide-eyed and desperately turning her head around in search for someone who would help her out, she realized the once moderately crowded street was now practically desolate, what few people she spotted were hastily scattering and avoiding all eye contact with her.
Great, robbed by children, what a way to start her day.
