There weren't many occasions Kendra turned down a fight. They came with the job - jobs - and she kept herself in peak condition for a reason. Between the Secret Police, private investigator, and personal bodyguard duty, there wasn't much time for herself. But the moment a case found its way onto her desk that involved getting her hands dirty... Well, she looked forward to getting out of the office.
Her work sometimes called for less than legal actions, but connections with the Secret Police could easily clear her name. Not that she liked to play dirty to that extent. Cleaning up the trash had always been a worthwhile goal, even more so when accomplished by her own hands. And hearing about a small up and coming crime family moving massive amounts of assets - money and lives alike - there hadn't really been a reason to not act. Sure, she could have just sat on the sidelines and bet with the other pigs that enjoyed watching people beat the shit out of each other in the hopes of getting ahead in life, but that wasn't really her style.
Getting in the ring and knocking heads worked much better. Especially if someone happened to approach her with a 'deal'.
The match had barely started before she knocked her opponent down. He had been tall, skinny, not much muscle on his poor bones. No doubt looking to get ahead and feed himself - maybe his family. She blocked his punch, side-stepped, and slammed her calf into his ribs. She thought he would go down, but a backhand caught her off guard and landed in the middle of her face. The blow made Kendra stumble back, shaking her head out before dashing forward and kicking his legs out from under him - fist driving down into his stomach before he even had time to recover. A quick blow, hard and fast, enough for him to stay down after a 10 count.
Kendra straighten herself up, the back of her hand wiping away flecks of blood that had dripped from her nose. Was it broken? Unlikely, it had only been one good hit. Not that it mattered much, that could be fixed easily with her prize money. The bandages wrapped around her hands and wrists felt loose, and she took the chance to adjust the wrapping while stepping out of the ring and settling onto a bench to wait for her next match.
It felt good. The rush of adrenaline after throwing the first punch, the sting of bruises forming. No doubt keeping her goal in mind might prove a bit difficult, depending on how things went. Well, she'd just have to wait and see what happened. No doubt the ending would be exciting.

Now this, this was a way to earn some money that Ellie didn't hate for once. As soon as she'd heard about the little fighting tournament being whispered about in some of her lower circles she knew she'd be signing up for it. The people running it were likely grade A scumbags but Ellie had taken money from worse people. She'd just make sure to put them on the 'to fuck up' list for later.
It had been so long since she'd been in an actual fight, the idea of it had her almost giddy. Had she really had a good fistfight with someone since her two years in the police force? There'd been fights, yeah, but as the scars littering her body could attest, knives or guns were often involved.
Her first fight wasn't much of a real fight though, unfortunately. It was an elimination style tournament so there was bound to be some burn outs in the early rounds. Her opponent was a thick man who'd rolled his eyes at the sight of her; that look quickly changed when she removed her jacket to reveal her scar riddled arms, knuckles freshly wrapped. She smirked, giving a wink, both for show and to activate her eye mod.
It was clear that he was used to relying on his size in a fight and likely had never been in anything more serious than a bar brawl. She ducked a blow aimed for her face, sidestepping so she could land a solid punch to his ribs. He doubled over slightly and she used the moment to slam her fist hard against his temple. He was so dazed that it was easy to grab his shoulder and, spinning around him, shove him to the ground. She set her boot against the back of his head while the ref gave the ten count.
Outside the ring, she watched them move her name to the next portion. There was some time to kill before her next round. Time for the fighters to get their breath and for the betters to adjust their wagers after having seen what some of the fighters had. She shut off her mod, not wanting to waste its battery outside of the ring.

From what Kendra could tell, the big dogs hadn’t made themselves known yet. No doubt they would wait until the finals rolled around. Well, even if she didn’t make it to the finals it only gave more time to look around and see what she could find. No reason to stop the fun and cut the winner away from a prize.
A yawn left her while she leaned back against the wall, letting her eyes adjust to the lighting. Ever since she had gotten her gene mods, things had become so much more clear. She could smell the heavy magic users, see the strain of muscles from people that had finished fighting, hear the cracking of bones from across the room. It was like the entire world had been muffled and dull before – like she had finally actually awakened to the world. Analyzing opponents had become such an easier task.
Two men moved over towards her, a brow raised in their direction. She didn’t even give them enough time to move closer before she pushed herself out of the dark corner and moved towards the waiting area, her bandaged hands adjusting the hem of her coat before settling down on a bench in a well lit area. The bag around her body shifted while she dug into it and pulled out an unopened bottle of water. She had intended to keep quiet and listen to anything she could, though someone caught her attention.
“I didn’t expect to see someone my size here.” She called towards the other short fighter, holding out the bottle of water in her direction. A grin had spread across her face, the scars on her brow pulling tight. “Nice to know there are more of us.”

Ellie was examining her surroundings when someone decided to talk to her. She raised a brow at the woman that approached her and, okay, it was kinda nice not having to really look up at someone for once. Her eye went to the scarring beneath the woman's eye; so maybe she wasn't the only person in Novus who didn't find scars to be the worst thing in the world. Interesting.
She accepted the bottle with minimum suspicion; the chick would have to be fall over stupid to drug another fighter out in the open and Ellie didn't get the vibe from her. Still, she gave the water a sniff before taking a drink. "We seem to be in short supply, or at least that's the joke I usually hear." She quipped, giving a small smile. Fighting put her in a good mood. She gestured to the lightly sullied bandages on Red's knuckles. "You just finish up your first fight? Hope it was more interesting than mine."

Not having to look up for once really helped with neck pain. If Kendra didn’t know better, she might have thought her neck would snap with how often she had to look up to Samuel ( or Uriel, for that matter ). Lack of height had its advantages, but that certainly wasn’t one. Or tall shelves. She hated tall shelves.
A slight grin spread across her face once the drink was accepted, and she brought out another for herself. She couldn’t blame her at all of sniffing the water, what with how some people treated lower class fight rings - and people. Suspicion could keep you alive. And with the scars, no doubt keeping on her toes had helped. Strange as it might have been, seeing someone else with facial scars put her heart a bit at ease.
Kendra let out a laugh at the joke, twisted off the top of her bottle and took a sip. “A pretty low blow, I must say.” A brow raised as she looked down at her hands, the dried blood staining the originally white bandages. “A lot less interesting than I would have liked, but he did get me one good time. Glad my nose isn’t broken. That always hurts like a bitch to get fixed. How’d your fight go? Looking forward to the next round, I’d imagine.”
It was nice to just have a casual chat, even in such a place. It helped ease the tension off. And Samuel couldn’t say this wasn’t social – even if the place had been for an assignment – she didn’t actually have to talk to anyone for the entire time.

"Oh god, the nose is the worst. Right up there with splinting your own fingers. Or getting shot." She reached up to rub at the bridge of her nose, feeling the slightest bump from having been reset so many times. She shrugged at the question about her own fight. "Bar brawler so, you know. Few hits and he was down. Hoping for more of a challenge with the next one."
It was a nice surprise to actually be able to talk with someone in a relatively normal way. It seemed these days all her conversations were about threatening someone or bullshitting her way to a bigger payout. Plus Red wasn't too bad to look at so that was a nice bonus. Might have to extend an offer to help bandage some wounds if she made it closer to the end of the tournament.
She took another drink and cast a look about. The screen that showed the match ups finally displayed who her next opponent would be. Another guy, it looked like. "So, you in this to win, or just wanting to hit some assholes? Just curious if I might get the chance to go a few rounds with you myself."

"Oh, ouch. Yeah, getting shot is the worst. Stabbed too, those damn jagged cuts sting to high hell." She rubbed the palm of her hand, a laugh forming as she thought back to how Samuel had stabbed her through the palm. Even being drunk hadn't helped much with that. "Well, here's hoping you get a good challenge. These always feel more worthwhile."
As their conversation moved, Kendra found herself wondering more about the woman next to her. What kind of story did she have? Work? Hobbies? It wasn't often for her to discover a person that made natural conversation without feeling the need to present herself in the flawless professionalism she exhibited around most everyone. Except Samuel, because fuck him. Maybe it had to do with the setting, but either way she didn't mind. No reason to over think things like usual.
"Bit of both, really. Been having a bit off difficultly letting my frustration out because of an associate being an absolute ass. And I always play to win. Prize money isn't bad, the fights are descent, and surprisingly good company is never a negative thing." She laughed and cast a glance over toward her companion. "From the look of you, I'm guessing you're in it to win it, yeah?"
The bottle found its way to her lips while she looked over towards the match board. Were they in different brackets? With how many people around - it only made sense. Another grin formed on her face, an idea forming. Motivation for herself, entertainment, and more information for the job. And here she had thought about throwing a match to not draw attention to herself.
"Make sure to make it to the end. I'll take you up on those few rounds. Winner can even buy the other drinks with the prize money, how does that sound?"

"You should try having a knife go through your cheek. Talk about stinging." She tapped the scar coming from her mouth and shivered a bit at the memory of it. She still remembered the pain of it; plus it was how she met Lev again. And that was its own kind of horribly, crippling pain.
"Oh, trust me, I know all about having an 'associate' being a royal pain in the ass." Ellie laughed a bit and nodded at the question about winning. "A girl's gotta pay some bills, and my roommate is a bit of a deadbeat. So when I heard the chance to knock some heads and get paid..." she shrugged and took another drink.
She gave Red another once-over, considering. Well. She could certainly think of much worse ways to spend the evening than enjoying a few drinks with a pretty face after a good fight. So she grinned and nodded again, "Yeah, sure. It's a date. But don't think I'll go easy on you just 'cause we've gotten chummy. You end up in the ring with me and I can promise to give you a real fight."

"I was wondering about that one. You pull it off well." Kendra grinned and swiped a thumb over the corner of her mouth. It wasn't often she got to hear scar stories, much less exchange them with someone that didn't look on with confusion and disgust for why she didn't just get them surgically fixed. It wasn't as if she couldn't afford the process - sentiment just stopped her from getting rid of them. Especially the ones on her face.
"To letting off steam because of idiot associates. May they one day become less difficult. You'll have to tell me about your pain in the ass. Mine has this horrid superiority complex that just makes me want to box his ears constantly. And don't get me started on his demanding nature. It's like dealing with a kid sometimes." Give her an opportunity to bitch about Samuel, and oh boy would she take it. Ah, but she knew the plight of needing money. Maybe not since she moved up in class, but that didn't stop the experience from most of her life.
"I look forward to it." She grinned and glanced to the side, noticing that it seemed to be time for her to prepare for the next match. A small 'tsk' left her as she moved to her feet and stretched her left shoulder out. "Name's Kendra, by the way. And don't worry, I'd never ask for you to go easy. It'd hurt my pride too much." She gave a small laugh. "Good luck in your match, though I doubt you'll need it much. I'll be back around here after mine, so stop by again when you finish if you want. I'm never against the company."
A hand raised as she began to walk towards her ring, a grin on her face even if it couldn't be seen. And now she had a new goal for the day. That always helped motivation.

Ellie couldn't help but beam, just a little, at the compliment. It was so rare to find someone that didn't find her scars either disgusting or intimidating. Which, really, was part of why she had them, but still. They helped make up for how hard it could be to intimidate someone when you had to crane your neck to just look them in the face.
"To that." She tapped her water bottle to hers before taking another drink. A snort escaped her at Red's bitching, the feeling of camaraderie growing at the sound of her annoyance. "God, it's like you're his babysitter, right? Mine's like that, only I'm fairly certain he'd die if I wasn't there to look out for him. He has no survival instinct whatsoever."
Ellie smiled, "I'm Ellie, nice to meet you, Kendra." She followed Red's line of sight to see that it was almost time for the next matches. Fun. Getting to punch people and flirt with an interesting girl; this day was just getting better and better. "Try not to disappoint me, Red. I'll see you in a bit."
