[[ as of outbreak stage 01 ]]
There seemed to be a chill in the air - not a real one, not of cold or ice or anything like that, but instead one of uneasiness and tension. It had been like that ever since he'd started hearing rumors, since he'd spoken to a few of those who'd been attacked but showed no signs of it (well, all except for one girl who'd managed to trip out of fear and hit her head, but that was secondary to the attack she had described). What was more, he wasn't sure if he was seeing it now - the fleeting shadows, passing noises; it could have been all in his head, the lingering fear of what everyone else described. But. But it could be real and he was on edge.
So on edge, in fact, that he'd been surprised by a call from Zephyr almost enough to drop the glass of water he'd just poured himself, though thankfully he pulled himself together at the last moment. Deep breath. Maybe he'd sounded spooked or maybe it was just what the other man had heard of the stories, though, because when Attie had mentioned heading out soon to check on a few patients in the less reputable areas of the slums, an offer to go with him had been given.
He hadn't thought for a moment to turn it down - a rather nervous, "please," had been his response, in fact, and how he was sitting around at home waiting for Zephyr, checking over that he had the supplies he needed. He really, really didn't need to be this nervous, he shouldn't have been - but maybe having Zephyr along would chase some of that away. He wasn't going to let the rumors and strange happenings stop him from going out to see patients that had a harder time getting around, that was for sure, but the added company would definitely be a comfort.

Things had been really unsettling lately. Ever since the news of those attacks started spreading, people had become kind of... paranoid. Less strolls at night for a lot of individuals, that was for sure -- but it hadn't stopped Zephyr, and he was so far fine. Don't get him wrong, though, he was absolutely concerned about the attacks. As long as he could help it, he'd make sure Eva was safe somehow.
And Eva wasn't the only one on his mind, either. The call to Attie had been a little more impulsive than normal, but maybe he was right to call. The other man sounded off, yet spoke of going out. Visits. Of course, the good doctor couldn't abandon his less fortunate patients. What really solidified his concern was the nervous please Attie had replied with when Zephyr offered to accompany him.
He wasted no time finding his way to Attie's clinic in the Slums.
Walking right up to the door as he finally got there, Zephyr lightly knocked on the door. "Attie? S'me," he called, briefly considering that the door might have been unlocked, really, but he felt like just letting himself in would be kind of rude. He wasn't raised in a barn, he had manners. >:V

Time passed slowly as Attie found something to keep himself busy until Zephyr showed up. It was likely the tension, added to the way all the sounds sort of made him jump a little. He didn't know how much was real of what he had been told from patients, from people who showed up swearing that they must have some sort of injury but were, for all intents and purposes, completely healthy. Was it... was it real? Were people imagining things?
Hard to say, when even he thought he may be seeing and hearing things himself. But... it had to be his imagination. It had to.
Finally there was a knock and voice at the door, and it was an overly tired face that answered - a bit wary for half a second but that was quick to disappear. A relieved smile melted onto his face when he saw Zephyr - not just through a call but actually there and ready to come along with him while he visited a patient. It was a big weight off his shoulders now that he was there, actually - Attie really hadn't wanted to go anywhere alone thanks to everything he'd seen and heard, and somehow... somehow the thought of asking for someone to come along with him was a bit much.
"Nice to see you," he said in a breathy sort of way, as if the worry and tension had started to slide away into a sigh. After a moment he moved back and opened the door the rest of the way, stepping to the side to grab a bag of the supplies he needed before slinging it over his shoulder. He paused mid way through doing this, looking back at Zephyr. "I'm ready to go if you are but - did you want to step in for a moment or anything?"
It was only polite to ask, after all. And - - and maybe he was intimidated by the thought of the dark side streets, even with Zephyr there with him.

There wasn't much time before Attie answered the door, appearing incredibly tired and -- what was that flash of something when he'd first opened the door? Tucking his worry into the back of his mind, Zephyr flashed him a reassuring smile. He was here now, he could protect him and those pretty seafoam eyes. After all, the hero Z never failed when it mattered most.
"Nice to see you, too," he replied, leaning a bit on the door frame. Attie immediately stepped aside to grab some supplies, but Zephyr remained in place, waiting and not walking in after him. Instead, he shot a brief glance around the inside, before returning his eyes onto the doctor. Things were safe enough looking, of course, what did he expect? Nothing about those attacks mentioned them occurring inside, anyway.
Shaking his head, he stood upright. "Nah, only thing I need right now is you, Doc," Zephyr offered with a wink, stepping back from the door frame and pocketing his hands. A sense of normalcy was probably welcome, right? And if you thought the vigilante was going to miss an opportunity to flirt with the young doctor you were so very, very wrong. But, fine, he'd tone it down. A little. :V "That is to say, how can I be your amazing bodyguard if you're not in attendance?"

Just being in Zephyr's presence, no only not being alone but the way the man just seemed to be so at ease and comfortable, helped Attie relax a bit immediately. A bit of a flustered laugh left him at the flirty remark, though, and as Zephyr stepped away from the door, Attie followed him out onto the porch.
"Well, it wouldn't do to bodyguard no one," he remarked in a soft and nervous sort of way, hand fidgeting for a moment at the strap of his bag. Continuing softly as he locked the door behind himself, he added, "Thank you, though. I've heard more rumors lately than I'd like to have and no one really seems to know what's going on, so...."
Attie paused, turning around as he trailed off and after a breath wiped the worry away from his voice, half forced smile falling onto his lips. He wasn't usually this nervous, he wasn't usually nervous at all unless he left the slums or went somewhere really sketchy, so this was just... odd in and of itself for him to be on edge. He didn't like it. Not letting himself be a bother, though, he tried to grip onto cheeriness. "Anyway! Just one visit, even though I said visits earlier, and it's not too too far away."
No, just one little patient who needed some checking up on and there was absolutely no way shadows - however potentially real and intimidating they were- were going to stop him. With that said he stepped down off the porch to lead the way, glad that Zephyr was near by.

Making Attie laugh was always worth it, he had discovered. The flustered laugh that escaped the doctor made Zephyr's own grin a bit wider. Sometimes he worried that maybe he did go too far, but he'd yet to be reprimanded by the other man, so his habits continued uninhibited. For now, though, he simple gave a nod and a soft "right?" in response to being a bodyguard to no one being kind of pointless.
Still, mismatched eyes were stuck on Attie, and it was easy to notice the nervous air that surrounded him. That was just no good. Clearly, Zephyr needed to try harder at soothing the man's nerves. "Same here; it's better to stick together," he offered softly as Attie's words trailed off. Keeping his gaze focused on him, he watched as the doctor tried to bottle up any negative feelings and replace them with more cheerful ones.
"Just one? Well, that's disappointing, that means you won't keep me around as long," he teased, following Attie off the porch and allowing him to lead. Zephyr decided it just wouldn't do to let him think of anything but simpler things. No rumored attacks from the shadow were going to be plaguing this cute doctor's mind. "Now I have to get creative with my excuse to be around you longer!" The words were said with a bit of a laugh but -- well, the intent behind them wasn't necessarily false.

The cheeriness and smiles were easier to hold onto knowing that he wasn't out on his own, and that he had a certain pink haired protector with him. Shadows be damned, bits of movement he wasn't sure he was seeing out of the corner of his eyes forcibly ignored, he cast his attention onto Zephyr and to leading the way. He would... everything was going to be okay, whatever was going on was going to have to pass. There were patients who relied on him and people who needed his help and he couldn't let anything stop him.
Falling into familiar steps with Zephyr close behind, Attie turned his head to look at the other man as he spoke. The remark that there weren't enough legitimate reasons to stick around was given, with an addition of getting creative about excuses. Attie laughed at this, turning his eyes towards the road with a perfectly innocent smile.
"I could find you a few things to do if you wanted to stay longer," was all that he said - his tone didn't give away, of course, what those things were but it was just flirting and fun so he enjoyed letting it stay ambiguous like that. A quick sideways glance was given, fingers fidgeting with his bag's strap again before he settled them, but he did keep his attention on where they were going, as much as he could spare to it without noticing the way that the shadows looked wrong.
