"Please," said Caith, her voice calm but unapologetic, "tell me what happened." Her emerald eyes were much like her voice, firm but sympathetic, trying to ease the man in front of her while also coaxing the answers she wanted.
The man had a sad, lost expression on his face, a hint of fear mixed with his tired frustration. He raised his hands just to drop them back down on his hospital bed, shaking his head back and forth as he stared at the ceiling. "I don't… I don't even know. I told the doctors everything. I was just walking along the beach, and the next thing I know, I'm lying in an alley with three cuts on my gut. I don't know how long I'd been there. There was just… so much blood."
Caith let him drift off a little, trying not to rush him. But once he fell silent again, she asked, "Was there anyone with you at the time? Any friends or family?"
"No. I was alone. I mean, there were people around, but nobody I knew. The beach was practically deserted." He finally managed to look at Caith. His face was pale from blood loss. The doctors estimate he had been in the alley for ten minutes before he had regained consciousness.
"Do you remember seeing your attacker?"
"No. I know people have been seeing monsters and shadows, but… I swear I was just walking on the beach, and then I was in the alley."
"I see. And have you used any Magix recently? Any at all?"
"No. Never touch the stuff. I drink every now and then, though. About a six pack every other weekend."
"Have you had any procedures on your NUIP? Any surgeries, tests, maintenance, diagnostics? At any age?"
The man's eyes started to droop, and his face looked pained. A faint groan escaped his lips, and a sigh left Caith's. "Nevermind," she said. "I'll come back tomorrow." She then wheeled herself out of the man's room, told the nurse she was done with her questioning, and rolled out of the hospital. She sat off to the side of the building, leaving her van in the parking lot as she simply sat and thought things over, examining her pad of notes. This had been the nineteenth victim she'd questioned, and she was no closer to solving this mystery.

Thing were getting out of hand. Not that he hadn't experienced his fair share of tense situations, but those typically didn't involve the city going into a mass panic over the bumps in the night. He hadn't even gotten a chance to have much traffic to his bar because people were too scared to move around still. Annoying, to say the least.
That might have been part of the reason he shut Eternity down for the night. Part of the reason he had wandered around trying to find something interesting to watch from a distance. Part of the reason he ended up a tree near a hospital to see if anyone happened to be admitted. What he didn't expect was for someone to actually come outside and wait on the side of the building. Even more so one that was wheelchair bound.
He hadn't seen someone in a chair for quite some time. If she got attacked, could she defend herself? She seemed to have nerves of steel with everything going on. Parker had no problems slitting the throat of anything that dared to attack him, but could she even move fast enough to avoid something fatal? Well, it seemed he found his temporary entertainment.
"Quite a dangerous time to be out alone. Wouldn't you say, Blondie?" Parker called from his perch up a tree. He looked down at the blonde, examining her while keeping himself hidden. Leaves scattered as he adjusted on the branch and dropped down, the sound of him landing soft and barely noticeable. His hands moved into his coat pockets. The hood was up, and his eyes were covered with a dark visor. A grin spread across his face, shoulders rolled forward and a general air of malice surrounding him. Though he didn't mean any sort of harm, he was just in one of those moods. Testing her. Nothing serious.
"Shouldn't you be scared of the things going bump in the night?"

Caith's eyes narrowed, and she flicked her eyes to the side, barely turning her head to look over her shoulder and up to the nearby tree. A figure slid down from the tree, his landing quieter than the faint rustling of the leaves he'd disturbed. As he approached, Caith tried to read him, keeping calm and composed expression the entire time.
Sadly, the dark visor and the shadow of the man's hood made it difficult to study his face. All she could see was his wicked grin that seemed to stand out from the darkness. Caith had to immediately yell "stop" in her mind to keep her cables from extending and stiffening into batons. The thought had crossed her mind—of threatening the man with a baton or perhaps even a grappling hook spear—but she kept it at bay, instead letting the man approach her.
When the man was next to her chair, Caith looked forward, always keeping the man in the corner of her eye. She then spoke as if ignoring the man's threatening aura, "Perhaps not. Perhaps being alone is the safest choice." It was one of her many theories, one that seemed to hold the most water, though it lacked hard evidence.
She then looked up at the man, observing him, waiting to see if he would try anything. Or, maybe with some luck, she would get to see someone hallucinate in person… or perhaps she would spend the rest of her night beaten and bloody on the side of the road—best case scenarios, really.
