Of course the conversation would never be brought to light, but Rio was thankful the male hadn't brought up anything in regards to her less than reputable state when coming back into the world of consciousness. Of course she had turned away from the male as soon a she could, putting contact away from the blush that formed on her tanned cheeks- unbeknownst to the Lion that Levenin was unable to see it in the dark of night anyways. Rio didn't let her guard down often- and this was no different. Her mistake came from fatigue and that was it, the idea that she fell asleep within reach of a man she barely knew was enough to make her heart twist. Hopefully he didn't inject the redhead with something in her sleep. She'd landed on enough sharp objects for one day.
Rio looked back, time fading the blush she'd carried as she looked over what the male had said to her. It sounded like someone wanted a clean conscience, not that she could argue. It's not like the would-be doctor was about to kill anybody but Rio with his choice of extremely close weaponry. If the duo wanted to off their would be treasure-hunters, Rio would have to take the shot. If they were unskilled, it would be easy- but of course having something easy after all this work was unlikely at best. She played the situation out in her head several times- and against skilled opponents the outcome would always be the same. She would fire once, and if they were prepared- both would duck or maybe she would hit one. The survivor would immediately scramble for cover, and determine their location based on where the weight of her round made the body fall. It's what Rio would do if someone shot Levenin- and it was a dead giveaway if the enemy happened to have another sniper. "....I don't like it."
She mumbled to herself, caught up in the tension that built up before any shot she took. The two would move for now, reassessing their options the closer they got."I- I told you I didn't fall asleep!" Rio blurted out, perhaps a tiny bit louder than she would have liked. The idea of her voice reaching their targets was unlikely at best, but it didn't stop another subtle shade of pink from gracing the tanned lion's cheeks before she shook the thought off in favor of business and more important matters.
And so closer they moved. Inch by inch, foot by foot. The two ahead were moving at a lax pace, likely just as tired as Levenin and Rio were from all the walking it took to get here. Of course, the lion and the doctor followed with a bit more vigor in their step- eager to catch up and make their chase a short one. "Look, I'm...Maybe we get to the top of the next dune and I fire off a warning shot. See where it goes from there. We'll have the advantage in terms of layout and position. If they fire back, or if they have the gear...we take them out." Rio looked back at the male, as if struggling with an internal debate while heterochromatic eyes rested on the lifeless skull that stared back at her. She sighed, a tone of defeat flowing from soft lips as a previously concealed tail darted out and in behind her cloak. It emerged shortly thereafter, a silenced, traditional looking 9mm pistol dangling from it. "This might get personal. Take this...and don't make me regret it." Here's hoping he didn't grab the tail.It wasn't long before they had caught up closer to the prey they pursued. One dune had seemed particularly appealing- and it didn't take Rio long to mount her rifle atop it. The two finally in sight, Rio took a deep breath in preparation for what was about to happen. After a long exhale, Rio closed her organic eye as her cybernetic began glowing a dull blue. It took no time at all to sync her hand and rifle to the crystal clear zoom now before her. She fired off one shot, aiming to impact the sand right before the two men before turning her eye off. Another decision she hoped not to regret.Aaah, no worries, I can wait on msg/rp replies when life / game addictions happen /shot

Despite the nap, Levenin felt fatigue creeping through his feelings of worry. Danger was just ahead and an unforgiving environment surrounded them in every direction, but doing nothing but walking in silence was beginning to wear on him. The aching in his feet was back in full force, to boot. Lev popped in another hydration tablet, choosing to ignore how many of them he had left for time being. Focusing on supplies and food would have to come later, hopefully when they’d secured this mystery package.
When the suggestion came up to go ahead and strike, Levenin had more than a few reservations, as usual. ”A-Are you sure? I mean, I don’t doubt you can do it but…”
He wasn’t a stranger to impulse decisions. He had two reminders of his own ill-fated ones permanently etched into his back. But still, that’s exactly why he had to object. ”What about a back up in case something goes wrong? I guess I could go around, get close enough without them seeing and then move in after you make the shot. That’s risky, though, because I don’t really blend in—”
His rambling came to a halt as soon as the gun came out. Lev stuttered through the rest of his words as he looked at Rio’s offering. The thought occurred to him that she’d been keeping it there the whole time, in case she felt the need to cap him from behind. Mainly, though, it was a good thing his face was hidden beneath the mask or else she would’ve bore witness to his horrified expression. Guns— he didn’t care for them, to put it nicely. Levenin had sour memories of them. The one time he’d held one in his life was during a hostage situation and so it was a tainted thing for him.
But the man took it without complaint, the cold metal chilling him more than the freezing desert. He could only watch Rio set up her shot as he clutched it tightly in his hands. Their targets remained oblivious all the while, only noticing them once the warning rang out. He could only pick up their forms turning around to an explosion of smoke and sand mere feet from them. Lev had to assume his own pistol would be able to shoot that far. Something like this could, right? Whatever model it was?
To his relief, at least initially, the two strangers in the distance found them right away and judging by their stances, they were on the defensive. He took that to mean they didn't have ranged weapons but that was soon traded for something far worse. They didn’t take long in deciding their response to an impending conflict, and Levenin stood helplessly as one of them spun in a circle and kicked up a swirling dust devil of sand.
”It’s Air Magix!” he called out as his eye mod sprang to life. The cover of dust was too thick for him to see their figures too clearly, only just enough to see them turn tail and make a break for it.
There was a whole multitude of thoughts that went through his head but the only one that he could focus on was to not let them get away. Whoever they were, they weren't combat-prepared but that would all lose meaning if they escaped. Levenin bolted forward, Rio’s pistol swinging wildly in his hand as the other went for the first thing he could grab inside of his cape. The cloud was spreading quickly, with another popping up not much further away as soon as he reached the first one. Was it the same user, or were they both utilizing Magix and splitting up? Either way, Lev couldn’t see a thing and was rewarded for his quick thinking with a fit of coughing. He couldn't let this happen. After coming so far, they were slipping away too easily. The thief had half a mind to just point the gun into the cloud and start shooting, because at least that'd get him further than standing around under a hazy night sky.WHEN WILL SEVERE WEATHER STOP RUINING MY LIFE AT WORK LOL but I finally beat a game I put 74 hours into when it was all said and done so there's that

The temptation to aim a tiny bit more up and to the left was overwhelming. Rio was sure offing one of the duo immediately would make their situation easier- but it would practically kill the chances of negotiation. If they were close at all, it would send the other into a blind fury and if they were empty handed that would be two deaths for nothing. Despite killing for a living, Rio hated icing someone not on her 'list'. What little morality she had prevented it, perhaps the tiniest hope that somehow her karma would equal out somewhere along the line. The shot missed, as intended, and the response was unfortunately clear. Rio's eye lit up again, practically sticking out like another star amidst the dark sandy horizon. Levenin charged in like she'd given him a club instead of a pistol, causing an almost blank stare of disbelief as the sandstorm kicked up, soon incapacitating the young man and leaving a thick cloud for the two to escape in."God damnit!"Rio shouldered her rifle, sliding down the bank she'd set up shop on and pulling up her goggles again to join the bandanna around her mouth. She had short ranged heat sensors, which the lion activated as she pushed herself through the torrent of wind to track down the makeshift doctor. A silouette of heat with a hidden head- likely from the bone mask chilled in the night air. That was him most definitely. Rio reached out a hand, clutching the male's shoulder and attempting to drag him out to the side. Of course, with thermal vision Rio couldn't even tell where the sand storm ended, but walking to one safe direction was the best bet they had.It took a bit, but once freedom was theirs Rio let out a gasping exhale, taking in air now that she was free of the tempest brought forth behind them."This isn't going according to plan. If you don't have another idea I'm chasing them until I can cap one in the knee."Rio pulled down the bandanna and pulled up her goggles. The lions face definitely suggested irritation to say the least, eyes narrowed in sharp focus on the male for a moment before they diverted to the haze of wind and sand they had just left. Guns weren't out of the question yet- and the chance of being fired back upon were ever present. They would have to be smart to capture the two alive- and lucky to capture them dead.Rio let out a few more coughs, looking up to the moonlight cascading across the sandy plains around them. She'd lost track of exactly which direction the two had run off to, but she had a general idea based on where she'd been when the sandstorm approached. Taking her rifle again, Rio ejected the clip and popped her round in the chamber out- tossing the rifle at Levenin's feet."If you're not willing to pull the trigger, then carry that and follow along. I'll do the dirty work."Reaching for what little stamina she had left, Rio tightened the straps on her pack and began running towards where she thought the two were going.
Sorry for the late reply. Work took away our days off until the job's done in another 2 weeks or so :s Also I totally thought about asking if you wanted to have Levenin just shoot Rio by accident in the dust cloud 8,D But you've been busy so I figured I'd just pump out a reply while I could--

Levenin had soon realized the horrible mistake of running into a cloud of dust as he had to pull back out, coughing all the while. Even his mask couldn’t stop it from creeping up underneath and right into his lungs. It wasn’t too late to shoot. As long as he continued to stand around, sputtering and wheezing, there was no chance of hitting them. But even a few blind shots had the slightest probability of catching one of the escapees in the leg or something. However, the gun shook in his hands. One could call it preserving ammo, but deep down, Lev knew he didn’t have the guts to fire.
He froze when he felt a grip on his shoulder. At first, Levenin feared their targets had magically come full circle while under cover to exact their revenge, but when it became clear his captor was taking their time, he figured it had to be Rio. Who else would bother saving him?
”I’m sorry, I should have…” It dawned on the man how stupid he’d been to jump in, not knowing if the enemy could’ve simply capped him from a distance. Though her face was obscured, Levenin already knew she was probably furious with him. ”I’m not a good shot. I, uh, can’t really deal with guns…”
Some ally he was. He was certain Rio didn’t want to take a back seat to hear about his fear of firearms, so he chose to trail off his excuses there.
”We can’t rush in. How will we see them? We could get ambushed or—“
The sounds of blossoming desert sand became more and more muffled as they slowly died off in the distance— a sure sign the two targets felt confident enough that they didn’t need any more cover. Levenin could make out about five separate clouds from where he stood, enough of a lead that he and the markswoman would have to run the entire way to catch up. In a way, Lev was glad to be the pack mule instead on this chase. Sure, it was because of his ineptitude, but it saved him from having to shoot. Willing his eye mod to seek out anything in the dust and dark, he kept behind Rio as she led the way. The whole time, he was alert for ambush, though he didn’t think it’d come. Wherever those two figures were, they didn’t want to risk a confrontation. Why risk death or injury when they’d evaded their pursuers?
However, the dirt clouds refused to dissipate no matter how long they ran. A side effect of the magic, he presumed, but annoying in any case. They were missing half of the view just being on this side of the storm. ”I’m going around to the other side,” Lev called out to her. ”I’m gonna scout over there.”
Hoping she wouldn’t need his assistance in the next few minutes, he ran perpendicular into the haze before popping out the other side. For a moment, his breath was taken away by the view— the approaching sun beginning to edge its way over the horizon and a sprawling expanse of long grasses and prairie emerging before him. They were far away from home now, but in the meantime, Lev could enjoy the sights for just a second. At least until said sights were interrupted by movement. Was it human? An animal? It was too far away to tell. It’d make sense for them to flee out of the heat and sand, right? Not wanting to lose track, Levenin fumbled for some way to contact his partner. No flares, no whistles, but the pistol he'd been given. He reluctantly took it into his left hand before firing a single bullet upwards, a silence falling over the plains as the sound echoed.
You’re good. I overwhelmed myself with threads and I’m struggling to keep up. I make bad choices in life.

"Whatever. You didn't shoot me in the liver, you're better as an inconvenience than an inhibitor."Nothing had been going according to plan, and the stress was mounting on the young lioness. She was sure dawn wasn't far away- and with it came the heat that would eradicate what little vigor the duo had left in them. The path ahead was obscured, adding to the difficulty she'd predicted a moment before. Sand kicked up like a wild horse, obscuring the path before them even after the creators had long fled. They would be at a significant disadvantage circling around, but really what other options were left? Rio was regretting her decision to not simply pop one of the suspected raiders in the leg. Of course, out in the savanna that would be a death sentence without proper medical aid. If they were the targets she'd been looking for- it would hardly matter in the end however. After handing her rifle to the male, Rio felt significantly lighter. It certainly didn't give her more energy- but diminishing what little she had at a slower rate was an acceptable middle-ground. She took a moment to crack a tight and sore back, raising her goggles up now that they had (for the most part) avoided the sandstorm before taking off.Rio made her way ahead, forgoing stealth for the sake of speed in order to catch their targets. As she ran, the questions started arising. If they could flee so easily, did they actually have anything of value? Was the package simply very small? The risk of the two not being their targets was certainly there- an idea reinforced by their decision to not start firing back after they ran. The possibility was still there however, and Rio didn't want to get shot for playing the nice-girl.All this running and still nothing. They had a good head start, but she expected something- anything at this point. The sun had broken the horizon and when she'd looked back to re-discern their location Levenin hadn't been there. She saw him drifting off to one side, yelling something about scouting over the hills to her right. Fine, yet the skull-kid peak. She buckled down, continuing forward until the sounds her pseudo-doctor of a partner were drowned out by the howling wind of the savanna. That's when she heard it."Wh-?!"Rio stopped dead in her tracks, immediately ducking and turning to the direction of the shot. Her eye activated, maximizing zoom only to lock onto...Levenin. The lioness was visibly confused, looking over the man rapidly to search for azure dripping from his cloth-covered frame. There was nothing, and by the time she got to focus on arms she'd noticed the gun pointed straight up."...Jesus christ."Rio scoffed, standing back up and eyeing the male from a distance. He'd essentially given away his position just to get a hold of her, though she couldn't think of an alternate method. Rio had simply dismissed the idea that he'd find something, or at least not considered it. Regardless, Levenin had apparently found something of note if he had to signal her in such a way, and so she ran. Each step felt like it was laboring on what energy she had left- but if they could end this here, Rio was sure she could make it the rest of the way back on hopes alone. Every second she was closer, pistol drawn at the ready- exhaustion and temper leaving her perfectly willing to pop whatever laid on the other side of the sand dune.
Sorry for the late reply again oTL Work finally ended and I tried to get my humanity back before I sell my soul again 8I Left the post a little open-ended because I wasn't sure where we were gonna go with it after this. Maybe pop me a pm whenever you're not busy if you wanna chat about it?

Luckily for him, Levenin couldn’t see the disappointment and frustration that was written upon the face of his cohort from this distance. He spun back around, hoping that what he’d seen hadn’t been a trick of the eye. No, there was definitely something there, though he couldn’t see what it was. Regardless, it was a chance, their one lead after being lost in a dust storm. He had to wonder why there only seemed to be one. Splitting up was the likely cause but when being pursued, it always seemed to him that safety was in numbers, but maybe that for those who were defenders instead of escape artists.
And really, at this point, he was beginning to grow desperate for anything. His mouth begged for actual water instead of tablets, which were diminishing in number the longer this chase dragged on. The few strips of jerky from earlier hadn’t overstayed their welcome and that left him with a growing dizziness from stomach aches. Through the heat and exhaustion, Lev urged himself to keep thinking while his mind was still able to do so clearly. Eventually, he knew that’d give out to hunger, to mirages dancing in the heat waves of the savannah. Who was to say he wasn't seeing things now? But it wasn’t like he could just quit and go home. The man was stuck here, with the only way out being forward.
The gun lowering to his side as he momentarily forgot about it for a few seconds, he thought about what he had— or rather, they had. Poisons were useless at this distance, Rio was ranged and ready to go… But how accurate was she? He imagined as a sniper, that’d be her strongest point. So what did he offer here with no weapons or aim to contribute?
It hit him instantly as the thief trudged his way back up the slope to meet her. ”Can you get a good shot from here?” he said, breathing heavily as he pointed.
They had maybe a minute to spare, with the target still gaining distance between them every second. Lev observed again. It would be a shot to the back, which meant the best option was…
”Right below the ribs. Either the left or right side, whichever you prefer. One good shot there… Can you do that? I can’t do anything in this situation, not like you… But if you can land a bullet in their kidney, we might have a bargaining chip on our side. I dunno if it'll work but... Don't kill them.”
