Isaac sighed through his nose, masking his relief with a sound of sadness or exhaustion. To think his lie had actually worked. The girl really seemed to believe it, and she looked sorry for him, which made Isaac feel both guilty and happy. Of course, on the outside he simply kept his face straight and his voice down as he said, “Nothing for you to be sorry about.”
When she asked her question, Isaac felt his stomach twist for a moment. What he was about to do felt so underhanded, so dirty and manipulative, but he had to get her on his side. And besides, he wasn’t sharing this just to win her over. He would have told her regardless.
“You don’t need to apologize. It’s fine, really. Dante and I do want to go back some day, and he tried so hard on his test… but it didn’t work out. I think part of it was my fault. You see, we’re four years apart, and I couldn’t leave him alone in the Slums, so I flunked my first test and didn’t retake it until I was twenty. My birthday came before his, though, so he was still going to be in the Slums for a few months without me, but I wanted to try and get settled somewhere and wait for him. He kind of pushed me to retake the test, anyway. But I held back to try and get in the Lower Class. I think that messed him up. All I wanted was to make sure I was there for him if he couldn’t make it to the Middle Class. Even in the Lower Class, things would be hard for him. But he thought the test was too hard if I couldn’t get to the Middle Class, and he didn’t have any confidence in himself. When he took the test, he got stressed out and ended up in the Lower Class with me. Maybe he held back, too, though. I don’t know.
“It doesn’t matter, though. He’s safe and out of the Slums. That’s all that matters to me at this point. If he tests up into the Middle Class next year or the year after that or whenever, then I’ll follow him or go my own way.”
Once Isaac finished, his cheeks turned a little red. He hadn’t meant to talk for that long. The mere thought of trying to win this girl’s sympathy had been lost to Isaac about two minutes ago. He had just kept talking on his own, as if he needed to get all of that off his chest. And now he felt embarrassed, but at least he didn’t feel guilty anymore. “S-sorry. That was probably way more than you ever wanted.”

Riley buried her face deeper in her arms as if to block the words out, but in reality she was listening to every word even if she didn't want to. Was that the kind of live her mother now was subjected to? She didn't want to think about that, but maybe, just maybe he could tell her more. Maybe he lived there, right? He could know more, perhaps even have some clues! All she had to do was ask...
She breathed out. People always wanted something in return and as touched as she was by Isaac's past...he was only human too, just like her, just like everyone else. At the moment Riley was glad her face was hidden so he couldn't see the wry smile playing on her face. These kinds of situations really weren't her forte.
"No, it's okay, I'm quite honoured you wanted to share that with me," she spoke from between her arms, not quite ready yet to look him in the eye. "I-I still think you should try...both of you. If only for being in a slightly safer environment. People tend to disappear in Lower Class." Her nails dug deep into the soft skin of her arm, but Riley couldn't care less. Part of her started to realize that everything up until this point had been useless. She wasn't moving forward at all! This was her chance maybe even her only chance; there was no way she'd meet this person yet another time on pure coincidence and she doubted tracking him down would be easy.
Yet despite wanting to ask for help or any information at all, Riley remained silent. She had nothing to give in return, nothing but money that is and she doubted that would make life easier. On both their accounts, seeing as her father would figure stuff like that out in no time.

Even in the darkness, Isaac could see the girl hiding her head in her hands—the lack of light from her eyes making that pretty obvious. He could hear her muffled voice stutter, and when he looked hard enough he could see her digging her nails into her arms. Once more, Isaac’s stomach twisted, and he felt his chest tighten, too. Did he upset her? Did he go too far or trigger something inside her?
He listened to what she said, and when the girl finished, Isaac relaxed his face and closed his eyes. This wasn’t about him. Her last comment had nothing to do with him or Dante. For a moment, he remained silent, giving the girl a moment, wondering if he should say anything at all. He opened his eyes and looked over to the girl. Her pain was obvious. The silence between them was unsettling. Even the thugs outside had stopped making noise—or perhaps neither of them could bring themselves to listen. The warehouse was still, quiet, painful.
“Someone you know?” he asked with a soft, hopefully gentle voice despite the gravel. He wasn’t sure if she would talk to him about it, but he hoped she would.

For a moment Riley hesitated with her answer, then gave a defeated sigh, combing a hand through multicoloured locks and kept it on top of her head, fingers digging into her scalp. She looked up at Isaac, probably staring at him for some time, before finally speaking. "It...yeah, my mother. She retook the test," was all Riley said, not wanting to elaborate more on the topic than was necessary. Yet, as she averted her gaze, she couldn't help adding:
"I don't know where she is."
The warehouse suddenly seemed too quiet even with all the banging going on outside and for the first time that night Riley truly felt trapped. She hated talking about her mother's disappearance, about her retaking that stupid test just because grandfather was a huge jerk. She hated all of it. So like always she simply grinned.
"Aw shucks, forget about hearing that. Heheh way to drop the mood Ril-," she cut off her sentence, eyes widening in slight horror. She'd almost said her real name! Oh no, oh shit, calm down just make it something different if he asks, yeah easy should work! This was exactly why she hated talking about personal stuff! It made her less sharp and turned her into an unthinking blabbering idiot!

Isaac's eyes slid shut as his lips tensed up. He had expected one of her friends to have been lost to the Lower Class, not her mother. What made it all worse was that she didn't know where her mother was. Had she become a Scavenger somehow? Had she left Novus completely? Numerous ideas came to Isaac's head, but it was too early to take guesses. Besides, that wasn't going to help anyone.
Isaac didn't even move when the girl tripped up and almost said her real name. He simply remained stoic and calm, thinking.
The banging continued. No matter how long Isaac and the girl waited, the thugs didn't seem to go away. They only seemed to check the surrounding alleys, and Isaac was getting tired of waiting around. He could avoid a group of idiots like these. It didn't even sound like they had brought too many friends, anyway. So he stood up and looked to the girl, saying, "We should go. If they're not leaving now, they might finally think to check in here." He had to play dumb, to act like he didn't know this girl could sneak out of here herself. "Stick with me. I'll get you to the park, and we'll split up from there."
Things would be harder without his visor, but he couldn't risk letting the girl see it. Hopefully he could manage. The park was only a few blocks away, so there were only a handful of cameras and thugs to avoid.
"You got a nickname or anything?" he asked the girl. "I need something to call you if we get into trouble." While he waited for her answer, Isaac made his way to the front of the warehouse, dodging the cameras with relative ease. Once there, he pressed his ear up against the shutter door and said, "No one's out front. Think you can open this enough for us to crawl out?"

Riley blinked slightly as Isaac stood up, seemingly unaware of her little slip up. She sighed in relief which then turned into a snicker as he mentioned the bandits finding them. Even if they were clever enough to figure out where the two of them were hiding, Riley doubted they had either the skill or tech to open that door.
“We’d be safer in here, there’s no way they’d be able to break in without the proper tech…but I get your point,” she whispered. She had no idea about Isaac, but she was running out of time when it came to her fake ID and it would only be so long before her father might get suspicious and check on her; only to find an empty bed.
Slowly following behind, Riley traced his steps after noticing how well he dodged the cameras. Part of her wondered how often he did this and why, but she decided to leave it be. Chances were she either wasn’t going to like the truth or didn’t want to hear it in the first place. Especially if he expected them to run into even more trouble.
“A nickname?” she asked somewhat amused. “Hn, well chances are you heard my little slip up from earlier so why bother, right? Just call me Riley…I’ll deal with whatever consequences this might have later.” The last part was muttered under her breath as she plugged in the MFB’s cord and started working on the door. Entering the code and setting a timed copy of it, Riley nodded and said:
“It’ll open in ten seconds, but’ll only stay open for 7 max., so be ready...I’ll follow you,” she said in hushed whispers while retracting her tools wire and standing ready.

"Seven's plenty," he said, his voice straight, solid, and serious. Once he heard the rattle of the door and saw light pour across the floor, Isaac dropped down onto his stomach and peered out from under the slowly rising metal. His eyes flicked left and right, checking for any signs of the thugs.
Nothing.
Isaac rolled along the ground, passing through the opening and springing up into a crouch just behind a pile of pipes. He shut his eyes and curled his hands around his ears, turning his head away from the warehouse door, hoping to hear something other than the clattering steel and grinding motor. As the door shut behind Riley, Isaac heard voices in the distance. He couldn't make out the words, but there was a heightened pitch—surprise—followed by hushed murmuring—the speaker's deep voice betraying him as his grumbles reached Isaac's ears just as the door fell silent. Someone had heard the door open, got surprised, and then went quiet to correct himself—his voice guttural with anger that he couldn't control. At least two people were coming, but likely more.
"Get to the rooftops," said Isaac simply. Riley already knew Isaac was an acrobat, so he hardly had to keep his skills a secret. He darted out of cover and ran for the nearest alley. The average slum dog couldn't climb buildings or jump from roof to roof; they would be lucky to have enough meat on their bones to climb a tree. Up top was the safest place to hide and travel from thugs like these.
Once in the alley, Isaac checked to make sure no one was coming this way. Starting a climb with someone watching was a death wish, but there was no one here to spot them just yet. Isaac jumped up onto a dumpster—its lid bending and banging despite his best efforts—and he leaped for the second-floor window, his only real option here. From there, he pulled himself up onto the windowsill, jumped up, grabbed the next sill, and repeated this until he was up on the rooftop. He could hear shouting down below, and a rock hit his ankle just as he pulled himself up over the edge and onto the roof. Isaac then looked back, hoping that Riley had managed to keep up.

Once Isaac left the building, Riley took a deep breath and quickly followed behind. Crouching low and eyes scanning their immediate surroundings for anything that moved. Nothing and no one. At least not until the loud clattering of the descending frame.
Cringing a little from the nearby sound, Riley knew the thugs could have heard as well. And yes, soon after she could pick up warning whistles followed by footsteps and multiple nasty scents which all seemed to be approaching at rapid speed. They'd soon be back. With a sigh she looked at her unlikely companion. Their best option now would be up. With her gene mods and Isaac's...acrobatics, they could easily outrun them. With a glance down the stone path Riley frowned they had to move quickly.
Luckily Isaac was on the same line of thought and she nodded in response before rushing off in the opposite direction of the acrobat. With a large leap and using the momentum build from her rush, she managed to grab hold of the first windowsill. Pulling herself up, Riley stretched and held on to the upper part of the window and turned so that her front faced from the glass. From there it was an easy way up a broken drainpipe - luckily this particular building did not belong to her family's business, those warehouses never seemed to have easy ways up.
Once up on the roof she stayed low again and quietly made her way over to where she last spotted Isaac. There was now shouting down below, angry and confused, but she doubted they had spotted her.
With a slight leap form one building to the other, Riley quickly spotted her companion and made her way over, grinning slightly.
"So, I guess we should hurry to the park huh? Not that I mind watching them bumble around a little longer," she joked crossing her arms and watching a few of the thugs kick against the warehouse door. Oww dad's not gonna like that...

The banging rang out through the back lot and up to the rooftops. Shouts came from the alley that Isaac had come from, and more pebbles peppered the roof’s edge. A window shattered from someone’s foolish idea to throw a big rock at a five-story building.
Isaac soon found Riley as she leaped over the alley and onto his rooftop. It seemed she had taken a different way up than him. From the sound of it, she hadn’t had any rocks thrown her way, and so Isaac had to shoot down her dreams of watching the thugs scramble like idiots. “We should go. No doubt someone’s going to call the cops soon, and unlike these guys, cops can actually climb.” He then turned around and added, “Some of them, anyway.”
At least for now, the duo didn’t need to worry about the thugs. Isaac felt safe on the rooftops, and it was easy to jump across the alleys and avoid any more rocks. It only took a few leaps in an odd order to throw the thugs off completely, leave those few that were in the know to wander back and forth, their eyes to the sky, checking the wrong buildings for moonlit silhouettes. Isaac’s grey and blue outfit did little to help them, either. He blended in better with the moon than some people would have expected, and before long both he and Riley were free to take the fastest route to the park.
By the time they left the safety of the rooftops and walked across the street to the damp park grounds, Isaac and Riley could hear police sirens wailing in the distance. If any of those thugs had managed to pursue the dexterous duo, they would be running for the hills by now. Sadly, this was also Isaac and Riley’s cue to leave.
“You gonna be okay getting home from here?” he asked, his hands in his pockets, eyes darting around. He kept himself in the shadow of a live oak tree, out of sight of the big yellow house across the street. The last thing he needed was the owner—who was likely awake if he wasn’t already down by the warehouse—spotting him and getting Riley in trouble.

Riley gave a curt nod and quickly fixed her scarf and hood before following Isaac over the roofs. While running she took note of the time and sighed. IF they were fast and lucky she'd manage to get home before anyone noticed. She could always hide the bruises and scrapes. The cut would be a bit more difficult, but nothing some Novi-gel couldn't fix.
Their trek over the rooftops was quiet and calm. The thugs couldn't follow them and Riley finally started to feel more at ease. The roofs were safe after all, no matter which class she found herself in, and soon - almost too soon - they were back on the streets and near the park. Looking around Riley sighed in relief. There were still some people out and about, enough for them to blend in. Which was lucky since the sirens wailing in the background couldn't mean anything good.
At Isaac's question, she nodded again. "Yeah, I'll be fine," she answered while slightly glancing over her shoulder, fidgeting as she fumbled to scribble something on a piece of paper.
"Hey -er- listen...t-thanks. Y-you know for helping and all...I -er- I don't like being in debt to people, but -ugh- if you ever need anything I-I'll see what I can do." Handing over the piece of paper, Riley briefly made eye contact before glancing to the side. "Don't try anything funny! This is a private number which only I will answer to...I'm not sure what to think of you, but...take care."
With those words, she turned and blended into the crowd. The moment she was in the clear, Riley would run at full speed hoping she'd be able to get home in time. Nevertheless, after everything that happened. Tonight had been...really exciting!
