Laraine fidgeted in her train seat excitedly, hardly able to even sit down because of how much she was looking forward to the salvage zone. Yes, it was strictly work business only and she needed to collect as many samples as she could find, but…still!
They’ll make something amazing out of them! A real chimera! Like me! Or well, I wish…
Nobody ever called her by her self-given nickname except Asher. They either looked at her oddly enough that she relented and gave them her official one or she knew it wouldn’t be smart to even offer the option anyway.
Speaking of which…she noticed a woman who looked like a bit of a chimera herself. Her modifications looked equine in nature, confirmed when the greenhouse worker’s gaze traveled down to her hooves. They were very nice; looking up again she realized that the insides of her ears also matches the woman’s eyes. What a nice attention to detail.
She was clearly higher-class, though, to have her or her family have afforded genetic alterations that intricate and expensive. Should Laraine not talk to her?
“Pardon my asking, ma’am, but what is such a clearly fine lady as yourself doing going to the salvage zones? I’m here for greenhouse samples, but you seem like you belong at the head of some fancy business!”
Too late.

Sitting awkwardly in her seat and head tilted back, Skylark took to waiting out the ride by trying to envision the train as it rode its rails over… what exactly? Rocks and sand for sure, but then it could even be something like a canyon and she wouldn’t even know it, unless perhaps… she managed to get a bird‘s eye view? She straightened up, beginning to consider the probability of being able to drop-kick her robo-pet Korintje high enough for him to get a good shot of the land while airborne, when a voice called her from her ill-advised thought.
She turned to face the voice’s owner and was met with verdant feline eyes. Skylark couldn’t help but grin with pleasure at such elegantly outspoken words. “Much the same as you, m’lovely lady-miss,” she gave a nod of her head as she spoke, “out on a trip to find new and exotic flavors!” She turned herself to better face her companion and stretched her legs in the aisle. “I’m in the business of tea, you see! M‘name‘s Skylark, Skylark of the teaship Daggerlily!” She offered out her hand to shake, “and you are?”

What fancy manners! She must be higher class, indeed. Laraine grinned back, flattered by the woman’s response, and noting what must be robotic companions. Were they more than just pets? That would be interesting.
She listened intently, fascinated, leaning forward slightly in her seat. “Tea? How charming! I think I might have even heard of that place...though I can't remember where.” Teaship...what did that mean? She had a feeling she knew the name vaguely, but lacked the exact memory of its placement.
Moving carefully so as to not bump into the woman’s long legs, the greenhouse worker eagerly extended an arm to return the handshake.
“I’m Laraine! But you can call me Chimera if you want! Whichever you like more! I’m a greenhouse worker, so I’m here for sort of the same thing! Searching for plants the higher-ups can experiment with for crossbreeding."

They send gardeners to the zone’s to collect flora?! “Ahh-” Skylark bit her lip, nearly exclaiming her thought out loud, quickly realizing that she was probably underestimating the person in front of her. The people who made a living off of the hazardous lands tended to be heinously technologically equipped or as rugged and harsh as the zones themselves. Or somewhere in-between. Certainly they would only send her if she was one of the toughest workers in the greenhouse, Skylark decided, a little embarrassed for having doubted so.
“Collecting plants…” Skylark absentmindedly ran her fingers over the metal lily on her chest and tried to guess at what might possibly result from crossbreeding the zone’s flora. Overhead, the speakers announced their arrival just before she could feel the train losing speed as it approached a halt, Skylark turning to collect her pets and bag and standing up all too quickly.
Nearly falling over when her inertia threw her off balance, she turned back around. Offered a choice between two names, Skylark opted for the one that she thought better suited the owner of such exotic eyes. “Come on, Chimera!” she called out as her anticipation grew too great, trying to dash off of the train with her arms awkwardly full of her things.

Suddenly the lady was excited and Laraine became curious, eyebrows raised and her catlike eyes keen and interested. She almost asked another question but stayed quiet as the woman thought, curious as to where as she was going with what seemed to be a ponderous train of thought. What sort of things were on her mind, presumably involving plants?
She jumped slightly as the speakers blared, but then got to her feet, excited. She knew the zone would have its hazards, but she’d been briefed by her bosses and was only a little nervous as she swallowed and -
Obediently followed after Skylark, unsure why the woman was calling her but certainly not opposed to going after her. After all, they had similar aims! It wasn’t like she was going totally off track.
“Coming! Careful, don’t trip!” She said, hurrying up next to the tea shop owner and catching her first glimpse of the Savannah zone.
“My word…”
It was almost the end of the rain season, but the plain was still vibrant, only beginning to yellow. Chimera could feel the humidity on her skin, smell the faint traces of animals. She couldn’t wait to get started.

Skylark’s pale ear flipped back when Chimera spoke but she didn’t hear her. She peered at the cropped view of the savanna from where she stood in the modest shelter that served little more than to keep one dry and mark the tram’s stop point on the edge of the zone. Slowly she walked towards the sight of tall grasses, her head lifted up and then her legs lifting her higher as she kept walking.
She chuckled, finally stepping out and onto the beaten path that led away from the shelter. “Chimeraaaa,” she chimed having risen to her fullest height, “the grasses grew far too much this year! I can hardly see ahead of us!” Through the shorter grasses lay hints of several dirt pathways that wound through the overgrowth, and only nearby trees could be seen past the myriad of tall grasses. Anything further into the zone was obscured entirely. It must have been an especially good rain season, Skylark’s tail irritably swept to and fro, good for grass but not so great for visibility.
Skylark heaved a sigh as she knelt and unloaded her armful of belongings to the ground, she placed her fox into her bag and slung it onto her back. Her raptor chirped at her as she rose up on her legs again, but she merely grinned and left him on the ground. “Stay close at hand, my Saigon. And Korintje, keep watch from behind.” The masked fox shifted and pushed his paws against the rim of the bag, extending his head and neck up and out, scanning their surroundings as commanded.
Readied, she turned to see what Laraine was doing. “Good to go, Chimera?” She grinned and pawed the dirt with a hoof, “we shouldn’t stick around the entrance or else some of the beasts will realize that a couple tasty humans have arrived and then rush on over to greet us!~”

The greenhouse worker, now examining the landscape more critically instead of simply being awed by it, realized her companion was right. And if someone as tall as Skylark could barely see, she was going to have a real problem.
“Well…seems you’re right. We can’t give up, though!” She said resolutely. At least if the grasses had grown so well there must be other plants - and tea ingredients flourishing somewhere.
She had been given a small knife to cut the plants with and took it out from her pack, one small and lightweight, the same color as her clothing so as help her blend in with the environment. She also checked on her several plastic cases in the pack. As she did so she watched the robotic animals with interest. How fancy! They reminded her of Asher’s dragon. Hopefully they'd also offer some measure of protection - from how Skylark spoke to them they seemed to be designed for something along those lines.
She nodded thoughtfully, seemingly unperturbed by the tea shop owner’s words. “I don’t how tasty I am…but it probably wouldn’t matter to something that was hungry. Everything’s good if you’re hungry. And yes! All my cases are fine and I have this - “ She showed her knife “- though, if something really wanted to eat me I doubt I’d bother it much. It’s mostly for taking samples.”
“Can you see the paths any better than I can? I can only spot traces of the dirt…” she said doubtfully. It was a good thing Skylark was so tall.
