She’d found the offer online. It definitely wasn’t the shadiest Nadine had stooped to, but it also wasn’t near what she’d call careful. Her application for guide had been accepted quickly and without comment- much less an interview. She could hardly call the process strenuous. It was a nice change of pace from her usual excessively cautious employers, although she honestly didn’t know which was worse- dealing with paranoid nitpickers or frou-frous utterly unable to even conceive of a world out to smash them into a pulp. An edible pulp, if one narrowed the scope of world to the zones. Of course, Nadine had never actually escorted any said frou-frous into the salvage zones, but it was annoying to consider. They were usually satisfied to simply send Nadine on her way to pick them up a pretty pelt, not venture into the zones themselves for a “learning experience”.
So this should be interesting. A middle classer without much know-how headed to the see the sights of the ragged seaboard.
Nadine had pulled out the paper on which she’d printed in neat, compact script the business details to reread during lulls of motion in the crowd as she scanned passerby from her nook of wall-space near the ticket booth. McCloud should be fairly easy to spot, what with the slew of exotic mods she gave in her description. All Nadine had to do was locate a cotton candy coloured horse-girl and they could be off to the soothing thrash of windswept saltgrass and the comforting bite of sea spray. Nadine had already dealt with the civility of the online ticket booth, and was antsy to be off, as she had arrived at the station long before their arranged meeting time.
When she heard the clatter of hooves, Nadine looked up from her paper to the woman clopping through the light press of humanity swirling through turnstiles and around her pressing presence. The most notable thing about her wasn’t even her mods. She was tall- maybe even as tall as Nadine. Almost. Well, Probably. Nadine shifted her gaze to the side and straightened from her slight lean against the wall. Nadine repositioned her pack and rifle across her shoulder and shifted her weight forward. No, she wasn’t standing on her tippy toes. It.. probably wasn’t quite that noticeable. She was maybe on the balls of her feet, but one really couldn’t count that.
Nadine jerked her focus away from silliness back to McCloud. When she had come closer, Nadine gave a clipped wave to draw her attention to the secluded corner where Nadine stood.

“Eager” was the word. As soon as she had a response to her ad, she accepted it. Skylark’s trip to the sea had been long overdue as it was, and having found a guide, there was nothing else keeping her from her trip. She was all at once exuberant and yet nervous to finally be going, to that place that somehow called to her as though it was in her blood to answer back, maybe she’d find out she’d built it up to be more than the sea really was. She’d been to the oceans in the domes. Beautiful though they were, somehow she was sure the people that had created them hadn’t been able to capture everything and left their replicate creations just a little hollow.
Driven by her thoughts, Skylark made her way to the station at full speed, her pets in their weapon forms stashed in the pack slung on her shoulder. It really wasn’t that early in the morning and with a good amount people around her, she tried her best to keep her tail from hitting other pedestrians as she jumped over half a dozen robo sparkle-dogs and one tiger by the time she made it to the station.
She slowed down then, steps resounding through the grand space. Her ears swiveled around as she scanned the crowd for her guide, Nadine Damani. She recalled that Nadine had described herself as being tall and having a dark, olive skin tone. It had seemed from her application that Nadine practically specializes in traversing the zones in the roughest conditions possible, and near as that was a description on its own, Skylark expected she looked like a warrior.
She wouldn’t be disappointed. A wave brought her attention to Nadine, waiting at a corner of the station. Skylark flashed her a grin and trotted over, trying not to look too excited. Nadine seemed kind of serious, standing very straight, and rather tall as well Skylark realized when she stood before her. She couldn’t help but giggle a little though, unable to contain her excitement and she gave Nadine a polite nod. “Nadine Damani? Hehehe I’m Skylark McCloud,” she willed the giggles to go away as she held out her hand to shake. “Ahaha I’ve really been looking forward to this trip, and very glad to find a guide so quickly,” Skylark started to prance away while looking back at Nadine, “you ready?! Let’s get those tickets and go!”

Nadine was never quite sure how to proceed with introductions. Usually they involved a tight, compact handshake, a scowls disguised as a smile, and the muttering of the other person’s name to give the air of knowing what was happening. Maybe with a side of looming on her part, just to make sure whoever it was she was dealing with didn’t get the wrong idea and try to scam her, or worse, get buddy-buddy and expect favors later. Non-professional first-impressions and introductions were utterly outside her comprehension, so she tended to stick with the overly formal procession of profession.
This definitely fell into the realm of business, yet the earnestness and excitement barley contained within Skylark that escaped in bursts of giggles was foreign, disarming even. Of course, being disarmed was not desirable in the slightest. Nadine’s small smile spread thin and tight as she swung her mechanical left hand up to meet Skylark’s proffered hand. Of course, Nadine also felt contentness bordering on glee at the thought of the closeness of the seaboard, but the mirroring and magnification of her own joy was strange. Not unfamiliar, but strange. The giggling didn’t help with the strange. But she had even said she looked forward to the zone. Nadine hugged pessimism tighter in the face of actually being wholeheartedly happy as she told herself, it’s because she’s inexperienced, naïve. Be ready for anything. But yet.. It could be nice to meet someone else who seemed to care about the zones as much as she did. It could be nice to show her familiarity in the wild and comfort in the unforgiving.
You said your name, and then you also said my name. There is nothing here for me. Thanks. Nadine dropped the shake in silence. Wait. HI! Nice to meet you! It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance! Literally any of these function! Skylark had already turned to leave for the ticket line. “Nice to make your acquaintance.” Uh. Ok, sure. Lets go with that. Better late and slightly mutilated than never. Had she not bought her ticket, though? It was so much neater to deal with the hassle online. “I have my ticket. I’ll find us seats on the tram.” Normally this would be an empty sentiment, as the trams to the zones were hardly peopled, but the opening of new zones had peaked interest. That meant that the tram was a robust one third full, rather than the usual fifth. Nadine shrugged her pack up, and strode toward the tram, then boarded it and made a beeline for the seats at the very end of the tram.

“Oh,” Skylark looked on for a moment as Nadine headed for their tram before scampering on to purchase her own ticket from the booth and rejoin her guide. She hopped into the tram and scanned the small group of passengers for… aha, Nadine had chosen seats at the very back.
Nimbly she trotted over and took the seat next to her guide, glad that she wouldn’t have to worry about her long equine legs getting in the way of others’. She hummed her approval and stretched out into the aisle, sitting somewhat sideways and placing her bag on the floor in front of her seat. No sooner had she settled in that overhead the speakers called out their departure, the tram started up with a loud whirring as the doors sealed shut.
She turned to look at Nadine, and it was a bit of a surprise that she was no longer at eye-level with her when seated, Skylark now tilted her gaze upwards. She leaned against the armrest and propped her head up with a hand. Surely her guide wasn’t much bothered by the idea of spending an entire tram-ride in silence, Skylark surmised, but why risk it? It started with “Nadine? Do you think the moon will be out tonight?” and so aloud she spoke her musings on what she hoped to see during her stay at the zone, from the glitter of moonlight on the open water, the low and booming songs said to come from some of the ocean’s largest denizens, to the craggy rock formations she’d heard lined the coastline in some places. She gave Nadine a little smile as she’d come to the end of her musing and rested back against her seat, still trying to conceal her anticipation but finding it increasingly difficult as the tram approached their destination.
