“Well....damn.”
The city had shut down the entire NUIP system and Crowlin had yet to decide whether or not that was a good thing. He was leaning towards the unfavorable side however, as being essentially completely safe from the prying eyes of the government wasn’t quite worth not being able to access much of his money, be able to send messages, and everything else he had grown accustom to in terms of his civilian life.
The flip side of that coin was his second life as a freelance hacker for the various vigilante groups. Sure a handful of them had their own hackers in their ranks, but Crowlin figured that they only really knew the basics considering how often it seemed that he was called out to help with something. The shutdown of NUIPs and the recent prevalence of the shadow virus, had made work in the Novus underground rather scarce as of late. People didn’t want to get infected by it, Crowlin included, and so mostly everyone had been laying low until the whole thing had blown over.
The lion was actually a little intrigued by the virus, wondering what it actually did mechanically to the infected people and their NUIPs. He couldn’t exactly do that however, as he didn’t know anyone who had been infected yet that he could search through and gleam the virus’s code off of. He was mostly glad for that, but if someone he knew had been hit, he might as well take the opportunity and see if he could even help them somehow. Not to mention what benefits that NUIP induced hallucinations could provide for someone in his line of work. Though it was all hypothetical that he was getting excited over nothing from. He had much more important and pressing matters to attend to.
Before the NUIP blackout had started, Crowlin received a message from one of his vigilante contacts saying that one of their colleagues in a splinter group had gotten their hands on some potentially valuable data, but needed his help to get past the drive’s local security. It was more or less the usual, and Crowlin looked at his clock to see that it was about time that he head out to go meet up with them down in the slums. He was a little anxious however, given that he’d never worked with this group before, so he was certain to bring what he needed to make sure that he give him the best chance of escape.
He packed up his mobile electronic equipment, his machetes stowed safely out of sight against his back and under his hooded vest, a couple of knick-knacks to help him out of tight spots, and he was on his way. He locked up his place and made his way downstairs, turning and walking ultimately to a location at the border wall between the lower class and slums that was out of sight of the cameras. He pulled his black balaclava up over his nose and brought up his hood before getting a running start. In one swift motion he leaped at the wall, pushed up off the side, gripped the top edge with his hands, and pulled himself up and over into the slums. Next stop, a quick paycheck. Good thing he never used his NUIP to get paid.
