[[ NOTE: pre-outbreak
It paid to be in the right circle of people in the world of art. Cuilë brought a wine glass to his lips as he listened to the host of this particular party chime about a particular so-and-so getting caught doing something absolutely dreadful and how terrible it was to find out another prestigious family's son was not only removed from the upper class but rumored to be a vigilante, how disgraceful. Personally, he didn't particularly view the vigilantes in any particular light, but... well... wasn't the system fine as is? It hadn't hurt him any, or anyone he knew, so it couldn't be that bad, right? Eh. It didn't particularly interest him one way or the other.
After a moment more of this talk Cuilë pardoned himself, reaching a hand to comb his hair behind his ear -- granted there was some that never wanted to stay back. He made his way over to the refreshments table, mostly intending to find something to indulge in other than wine. Violet eyes taking a quick sweep of the arrangement, he instead noticed the... remarkably tall person standing just a little bit away.
"Well, hello there," Cuilë immediately spoke up, because he didn't quite recognize their physique but they had such an elegant allure to them -- and height wasn't exactly going to deter him. (He'd be a much more meek person if he shied away from people taller than him, and that just wouldn't do in his position or class.) "I don't believe we've met before -- my name is Cuilë. How do you do?"

Well, wasn't this fun. effirië found themselves practically floating between clusters of other guests, long shawl draped low behind them like a shadow. Specks of glitter on it caught the lighting as they moved, and despite not saying much to those they bumped into, they left an impression merely by existing- after all, they'd dressed to get that effect tonight, and wanted everyone to know that they were there and enjoying themselves and above all else, not up to anything my goodness they were harmless. All according to plan, so far.
Pacing past a tray of refreshments, effi's face showed a trace of disinterest and perhaps dissatisfaction. Others may make their own conclusions about this- was it not good enough for someone of obviously fine taste? Did they take offense to the way it was served, perhaps? The truth couldn't be further off- effi was entirely disappointed by the lack of sweets, and couldn't care less for just how fine and particular and expensive things here were. Ah, but they would have to take care of that want later- and for now, settle for thinking that the woman who had organized this party was too stuck up for her own good. She would get what was coming.
Slender fingers tapped a mostly ignored wine glass as effi glanced up, finding themselves approached by someone they had not yet been properly introduced to. He was a small man, seemingly with good taste if the subtle glow to the markings on his skin were any indication, and introduced himself as Cuillë, a name that effi had certainly heard before but had never been given a face to match. Well, now they had a face to put to the name and they had to say they approved of any choices that may have gone into building such an appearance- Cuillë seemed not to be a gaudy individual by any stretch. Pale green eyes locked with Cuillë as they answered, not in an unfriendly way put perhaps a bit alarming; it certainly was a look that demanded attention.
"I don't believe we have," they answered, nodding forward in what was a shallow sort of bow. "I am effirë, and I do have to admit I find the evening dull. Don't you think so as well?"
Were they being a shit? Absolutely. However, it was fun to put people on the spot, and effi of course couldn't dare to hurt their reputation of being blunt and somewhat eccentric. For some reason, this made them a good guest to have, reputation wise, and it was honestly enjoyable. Regardless, the night wasn't going to stay dull for much longer- not that Cuillë or any of the other guests could possibly even begin to know why.

If there was any way to describe the individual that turned to face Cuilë, most would probably agree with stunning or graceful or maybe even otherworldly and slightly terrifying. There was something about their presence that was impressing and commanded attention, equally while giving off an almost demure vibe. It was certainly a look to turn heads.
And yet, when pale greens locked with violets, Cuilë found himself standing a little straighter. His immediate mental reaction was oh no this person was really cute actually? The manner in which they gave a little bow and spoke with such a cheeky way about the party -- he was immediately charmed. A temporary lapse in his expression that betrayed this was quickly replaced with a grin, and he abandoned his wine glass to a clear spot on the table.
"effirië? A lovely name," he offered, genuinely, making a mental note that he'd definitely seen brilliant artworks created with that name attached -- and it wasn't exactly a common name. Cuilë didn't miss a beat, however, accepting the posed question with confidence in his smile. "I'm inclined to agree, in all honesty. Too much talk of trivial things outside of my interests. At least the wine is sweet." A bit of a laugh escaped him at that, though Cuilë found himself stuck on the other's gaze.

effirië thought, as they looked over Cuilë again, that this would be a fine way to fill time until things became more directly engaging. Somehow effi thought that he wasn't just playing along with the conversation when he agreed it was a bit dull. Once again, they turned the name 'Cuilë' over in their mind, dredging up what they could from recalling it and its associations. Nothing of merit came to the surface for now - he dealt in artworks, from what effi recalled, but anything to do much more specifically with the man as a person was apparently beyond recollection or had not ever been revealed. Ah well, that didn't mean that effi couldn't pry - Cuilë certainly seemed interesting.
When the man responded, a hint of a smile found itself across effirië's softly freckled features and they laughed in response. Sweet? Not nearly enough for their tastes but they kept that to themselves for now. "The wine and the words of some of the guests, I notice." Which was not necessarily to say 'stop flattering me' because honestly effi adored being flattered, but was instead pointed out to gauge cuilë's character and to see if he would continue if it was obviously noticed.
"And might I guess one of those interests is art?" effi suggested, bracelets jingling against each other as they set their own glass down on the table just beside them. Eyes stayed locked entirely on Cuilë throughout this motion, and fingertips remained at the base of the wineglass where it rest. "Or, perhaps you have much wilder interests than that."

As to be expected, his compliment of the other's name did not go unnoticed, and he was accused of speaking sweetly. His smile turned into a more lopsided grin at that, and he brought one hand over to the other hand's wrist, absentmindedly playing with the bracelet there. "Cute and sharp, I see," he noted with a wink, fully aware that he wasn't discouraged from saying more flattering things should he be so inclined.
Still, effirië has inquired on his interests, and Cuilë was happy to answer those questions. It wasn't as if he had anything to hide, and the other seemed to genuinely want him to speak. "Yes, as an art dealer, I'm fascinated by the arts and those who create it. But perhaps I have some celestial interest. All that knowledge from long ago, it's a shame it's not really on the forefront of humanity's priorities anymore." He gave a wistful sigh at that, but held a smile still.
After a beat, though, he blinked a few times and sat upright. "Ah, but maybe I've said too much. Ancient history isn't exciting for most." Cuilë leaned forward a hair as he said this, the lopsided grin returning to his face. Violets were on effirië, and his tone had been borderline irreverent when apologizing. He was very aware of the social norms of the Upper Class, but sometimes deviating from them was a bit too simple a matter.

There was plenty of time to kill yet, plenty of people to mingle with until the main event occurred, but effi was more than satisfied to spend it with Cuilë for now. The man answered them back with a wink and a compliment, to which effirië couldn't help but softly laugh in response to. "You flatter me, Cuilë," they said, thoroughly amused and pleased with the man's words.
They let him continue speaking for now, though, watching his little movements, the toying with the bracelets and turn to his lips. He seemed more than interesting, but when he spoke effi found themselves turning all of their attention his way. Celestial interests? Ancient history? There was a noticeable change to their attention, though the tone of their voice didn't change any.
"The history of the world before is a hobby of mine, one might say," they said, back now turned right towards the table. "Celestial, though? Do go on, I've not really taken much time to learn about that aspect of the past."
Absently they brushed back a loose strand of hair, their attention legitimately and fully on Cuilë. Effirë had paid more attention to the world itself, and though they had read about the stars in passing, it had not initially been what caught their interest. It had been the tangible things, physical things that people of the past had used to touch and interact with that had caught their imagination but they would certainly love to hear about something different from someone who was interested. Other than the arts, their mind craved information and understanding about the world and this was as good a place as any to know about it. They'd made a good decision in thinking Cuilë would be interesting, naturally.

Yes, the soft laugh Cuilë was given was absolutely satisfying. Their tone, too, sounded pleased -- well, this lovely artist was rather cute, so he could find it in himself to oblige more flattery when he could squeeze it in.
What was even more interesting, to Cuilë at least, was the way effirië suddenly seemed much more interested in him. That was -- well, it wasn't what he expected at all. The few times he'd chimed in about the celestial around the ~*distinguished*~ upper class, his audience got bored incredibly quickly. After all, why should they concern themselves with the past when they had to worry about more pressing matters like what outfit to wear to the next party? )':
effirië's tone didn't change, but there was something about their demeanor that Cuilë read as truly interested. His shoulders relaxed and he brought a hand to his hip. "Oh it's absolutely fascinating," he replied, grinning wide. "Before, humanity had been able to travel to the stars. They found other planets, though none really inhabitable, unfortunately. Perhaps if they had found another, we wouldn't be standing where we are today."
Cuilë closed his eyes, drawing in a breath. "To live in another time would be an awfully alluring experience. But, I suppose I wouldn't have met you, in that case." He opened a single eye as he said the last few words, amusement in his expression.

Ah yes, it seemed like Cuilë was an absolute delight. The man seemed to brighten up when asked, grin splitting his face and effi was pleased to see this; the discussion was going to get more than good, they thought. It seemed that the other was going to end off his words with more flattery, though - and effirë was both amused and pleased with this. They'd have to make a point of searching all of their stored information on the past, though. Stars - it sounded fascinating, truly.
"I would rather bring the parts of the past up to us in the present," effi answered, "But perhaps we could trade some of the less interesting faces here for the more interesting articles of the past. Then you might have met me and we would be rid of the undesirable."
The statement was coupled with a sly smile, effi bringing up their almost forgotten glass to their lips in an effort not to hide the look on their face, only to make it seem as if they were trying. Cuilë seemed like he would appreciate the sentiment, though, and effirië definitely would have to remember his name; it was rare enough to find those who might make for interesting conversation, especially about the things they actually wanted to talk about, like the beauties of the past. They only wondered if the man in front of them were someone with troubling views on lower classes; but that seemed a bit of a dangerous subject, what with the plans for the evening.

That was certainly an idea - bring the parts of the past up to the present. But would it really be a feat that people of Novus or otherwise could handle? As far as he could tell, most people were much too preoccupied with the quiet but obvious civil war that brewed in the shadows of the city. Some weren't even aware enough of that much, because people of the Upper Class could just be so... ugh.
Of course, his thoughts were more or less answered to be the other before him, dark violets resting on them for a moment. It was a bold thing to say in this company, especially with such a sly smile and the way that their wine glass didn't necessarily seem to be hiding it. It was at this moment Cuilë realized that he'd found someone particularly special.
"That seems like an alright alternative, I must confess," he responded, smile sliding wide across his face that he didn't bother to hide. "Then perhaps we could see how beautiful the galaxy is, and not just what little there is to see within this lit up city. It'd make for a lovely date, that's for certain." He laughed again about this, entirely at ease because - why should he be concerned? He was good at his job, and by extension, there were quite a few artists here who would prefer to be in his good graces.
