Labored breathing, back pressed against the wall, something firm in his hands. Not an entirely irregular description for most of his nights. However, tonight had somewhat less enjoyable than most. Mostly having to do with whatever...thing it was that had broken into his house and attacked him. Samuel grunted slightly as he continued to press his back against the door, holding it closed against the creature inside. A pistol was gripped tightly in his hand, the first weapon he'd seen lying on one of his tables. It was weak, but better than nothing. There were sticks of magic scattered around his lab as well, but he wasn't so idiotic as to leave the door to try and go grab them. There were locks he could order to shut, but seeing as how Kendra's other 'securities' had failed him, he wasn't going to be so quick as to trust them this time. And speaking of his supposed bodyguard, where the fuck was she? "Message to Kendra." He barked out the order, his NUIP quickly sending a few lines of text across his visual field to inform him it had understood. "You have one fucking job. Get over here and do it." He practically growled out the words, pressing his back against the door harder as he felt another thump against it. There was some sort of...growling on the other side. Samuel wasn't sure what. Hard to imagine what could have gotten past his security. Unless Kendra had thought it funny to shut it all off for one night. But no, he was fairly certain he would have noticed that. He hardly had complete faith in her, after all.
He kept his back pressed against the lab door for another few minutes until the scrabbling on the other side died down, the pressure leaving as well. When all had been silent for a few minutes, he quickly rushed forward and hit the lockdown button, a series of heavy bolts sliding down over the door. Eyes darting back towards the door, he quickly made his way through the weapons stored in his workspace, finally settling with an energy rifle he'd modified. He kept a pistol strapped to his thigh in case of reload time, 4 sticks of magic in his opposite pocket. He didn't much enjoy being taken by surprise in his own home, but he'd make sure whatever this thing was regretted it if they made it through this door. And once that was done, he might go give Kendra a lesson to regret as well. It was her piss poor security that got him in this situation, after all. But for now Samuel propped the rifle at the door, sweat dripping slightly down his forehead. His aim was to shoot the beast if it came through the door, but if it was Kendra instead, his finger might just accidentally twitch.

A nice bottle of red wine, limited edition chocolates, and a long list of reports to go over from the past week. Not the most exciting evening, but better than nothing. Kendra had finally gotten ready to settle down for the night, moments away from kicking off her boots and suit - well, at least until she got a less than polite message.
A brow raised, nose wrinkled. What the hell kind of message was that? No details, no information to go off of - just implying she hadn't been doing her job. Sure, connecting the pieces didn't prove difficult, but his security system hadn't been tripped at all. There had been no spikes of proximity activity, no alarms, no suspicious activity. What, was he having a bad trip and needed someone to protect him from the scary daydreams? Whatever it was, she knew the night wasn't going to be over anytime soon.
"Three minutes. Do try not to die."
She wasted no time pulling on her coat and grabbing her helmet, the roar from her motorcycle being remotely started echoing through the inner chambers of the house. Her foot kicked the bike into hear while she leaned forward, information from the system streaming in through her NUIP. Security footage was clean. Whatever was bothering him would no doubt be some sort of false alarm. Her system had been flawlessly installed ( and upgraded the week before, thank you very much ), so whatever had set him off couldn't have been anything of concern. Maybe he let a mouse loose in his lab.
Less than three minutes after she had jumped onto her bike and sped down the dark streets, she pulled up to his door and kept the helmet on. Her eyes scanned over the perimeter, looking for any sort of breach or short circuit and finding none. A growing sense of unease settled into her gut while she kicked off her bike and moved to open the door, the security lock clicking after accepting her biometric scan.
She kept low, pistol in her hands and lips pulled tight as she surveyed the damage. Broken furniture, scorch marks, clear signs of a struggle. Her footsteps were near silent as she followed the damage down towards his basement, keeping her ears peeled for any sort of sound that might be a tip off to what was going on. What the fuck happened? Her thoughts flashed back to the investigation she had taken on with Cas earlier in the week - but that wouldn't make sense. He was indoors and should have been safe.
The silence did nothing to help her nerves while she moved downstairs. Though the farther down she went - the more clearly she could hear Samuel moving below. Quiet movements, tense, on edge. His heart rate seemed to be slowing down. And she had been nervous about getting gene mods. "Samuel, I'm coming in." She called once outside the door, counting to three before accessing the security panel and unlocking it. She kept her guard up once she stepped inside and shut the door behind her, just in case he decided to do anything rash.
"What's going on? The hell happened here?" She said, the helmet on her head distorting her voice. "Nothing was activated."

He'd thank Kendra to not let her obvious bitterness about their relationship get in the way of doing what he paid her to do. But it appeared that was expecting a little too much of her, wasn't it? It really was a wonder to him sometimes how such a child got into the Secret Police. Then again, it was hardly as if she was the only incompetent member they had. He scoffed somewhat at her reply message, but didn't respond to it. He was unsure as to where the beast was, and he knew better than to possibly alert it with noise. Perhaps he'd get lucky and it would turn its sights to Kendra once she got here.
His finger remained held carefully over the trigger for the next few minutes, the muscles tightening ever so slightly as her voice called out from the other side. When she stepped inside, she was just inside the crosshairs, and Samuel stared at her through them for a moment. Tempting, but not worth wasting a shot. He sighed and relaxed, letting the rifle rest on the table. "Close the door behind you. Your security system let some sort of beast into my home. I didn't get much of a good look at it, but I fired a few shots at it. Didn't seem to do much of anything. Bigger than me. Care to explain how something that large found its way in?"

If he took everything she said as a personal attack driven by bitterness, then they wouldn't quite have an enjoyable relationship - would they? One would assume Samuel could have understood her sense of humor or the sarcasm she used after so many years, but it didn't much seem to be the case. Assuming anything with him had proven to be quite the mistake.
For a moment, she actually thought he was going to shoot her. Now, if he had actually taken a shot it would have been a wonderful time to react and get him to learn from his mistakes. But thankfully for the both of them he decided against it and set the rifle down. His words did nothing to help, however.
"I can assure you my security system did nothing of the sort." She scoffed and turned to close the door, sealing them in for the time being. Kendra pulled a wire out of her coat and plugged it into the system. She reached back to pull off her helmet, shaking her loose hair out before setting it off to the side and getting to work.
"The system is impossible to get past unless there is a biometic scan coded to only two people, and they're both in this room. There have been no shorts, no forced entry, and no sort pauses in the system. Could someone have left something over here? Or perhaps an experiment you ran went wrong. Either way, nothing can from outside. And I didn't see anything on the way down here." She continued to run through the system while she spoke, looking between all the codes and different processes to see if something had possibly gone wrong. Nothing. There was nothing.

Perhaps if her immediate response to his endangerment wasn't to mock him, he'd think of her as a little less bitter. As it was, her sarcasm lacked the insincerity it was meant to carry when truly in jest. Frankly, he didn't much care about them having an enjoyable relationship. Kendra on the other hand seemed rather determined to make sure it was anything but that.
And sorry if he wasn't inclined to sugarcoat things after her security system had failed and god knows what was still wandering around his house. "Forgive me if your assurance does little to comfort me. I hardly have reason to lie to you Kendra." Wouldn't get either of them much of anywhere. "I'm aware of how it works, Kendra. And I'm not sure what type of company you think it is I have over that something of that nature would be let inside. It's also not the type of work I do." He preferred more human-related work, generally. And even when he did dabble he wasn't so stupid as to keep genetic experiments in his home. Those were generally saved for Salvage Zones. "You can repeat to me as often as you would like how your system should have worked, but the fact of the matter is that it didn't and now there's some crazed beast in my home that needs dealing with."

What would he rather her say? Words to coddle and assure him things were going to be okay? If anything telling him not to die only made sense. If he truly found himself if a situation that was life threatening without her there, then there wasn't much reason for him to not keep himself alive until she could arrive. Honestly, could he make up his mind? If anything it seemed as if he was going to fight her every step of the way.
"I wasn't accusing you of lying, I was simply stating what I'm seeing." He had no reason to lie, even more so if he actually felt fearful. "It's entirely possible someone accidentally picked something up while in a salvage zone that wouldn't incubate unless in a warmer climate. I doubt you'd let a malicious person into your home that would set off a ticking time bomb." She pulled back from the system after completing a total reboot, the cameras coming online and showing no activity. "I'm aware of what your line of work is, but that didn't rule out the possibilities of deviation from your usual path."
"There is nothing on any of the cameras." Her eyes moved over towards him, hands going to adjust her coat while stepping over towards him. "Can you describe what we're dealing with? I need approximate size, weight, etcetera. We can argue about the system all damn night, but it's not going to get us anywhere." She walked around to his side, observing his body for any signs of distress or injury. "Were you injured? If so, we need to take a potential saliva sample and check for any sort of organic material remaining."

A simple 'I'll be right over' would suffice, actually. He didn't need her to comfort him. He needed her to do her job quickly and precisely. Forgive him if he didn't cower and accept her needless aggression without question. She was an awful worker, frankly.
"Then your assurances still mean nothing." Might as well be saying he was lying when saying it was impossible for anything to get in. "I have my own systems and checks for that. And it seemed far too mammalian for anything of that nature anyways." And he couldn't be so certain about that last statement. After all, he was standing right next to someone who fit the description rather well.
He eyed her somewhat warily as she stepped towards him, but otherwise didn't react. "As I said, it looked like some kind of mammal. Four legged, I think there was fur but hard to tell in the moment. Darkly colored, heavy set, and as I said around my size. Perhaps larger. I saw claws for certain. And no, no injuries. I'd have analyzed and treated it already if there were. The shots I fired slowed it down enough for me to get away, but otherwise didn't seem to harm it. I was in the-" Samuel paused, hand moving towards the rifle again as a faint growling sound made its way from the door. "It's on the other side."

Call her an awful worker all he wanted, but she always completed the task at hand. Her proficiency had dropped over the past months for various reasons, but that hardly meant she hadn't corrected those in their time apart. Much as he might enjoy cutting her down, he didn't really have much leg to stand on. He was an awful employer, frankly. And really, how often did he willingly let her inside for pleasure and not business?
She caught the way he looked at her. Honestly, did he think she was going to attack him? And he said she needed to move on and grow up. She was doing her job, much as he seemed to think she was incapable of that. While he described the creature, she tried to match it to anything she had heard lately from the rumors floating around Novus. It matched the descriptions, but she couldn't confirm the threat level until she encountered it herself.
"Always better to be safe than sorry." She shrugged, a brow raising while he tensed. She didn't hear anything at first, though after a moment of silence she caught the sounds of growling. A finger went to her lips, footsteps quiet as she stepped towards the door and placed her shoulder against it to check for any sort of movement. There was something on the cameras. Something big, and dark, and clearly looking for a fight. Her brow knit together.
"Don't move." She mouthed to Samuel as the noise grew louder, her hand going to grip the pistol she kept at her side. They couldn't stay trapped in that room together. They needed to get out as soon as it left.

Samuel didn't much care what she did in their time apart. He valued her based on the tasks she carried out for him, not others. And she'd failed her one job of keeping him safe quite frequently in the past months because of her emotions. If she couldn't do her job and was barely even maintaining a professional working attitude, what right did she have to be indignant about her treatment?
And it was hard to say, based on their recent experience together. Not to mention he'd been attacked less than fifteen minutes ago. He had enough reason to be a little on edge. And speaking of which. His lips pressed into a tight line as the creature moved around on the camera. His hand slowly brought the gun into position again, sights aimed at the door. Nice to see that Kendra was being about as helpful as having no one there at all. Frankly, he wouldn't much mind shoving her out the door and letting her deal with this monstrosity she'd let in. But at least now that she'd confirmed it herself she could stop her unhelpful questions of how it got in and focus on the problem at hand of getting it out.

Ah yes, the lack of being in front with her body against the door so that whatever the thing was would attack her first over him. Amazing how his deduction skills always tended to lean towards her lack of usefulness aside from being a human meat shield. How dare she be so useless even though she was putting herself between Samuel and a current threat. Bad bodyguard. Bad.
Her breathing slowed at the sound of claws scratching at the door, body tensing while she waited for it to die down. The beast couldn't get through the door, but that didn't mean she wanted it to stay there until they were forced to leave for one reason or another. A few tense moments passed before she finally heard the creature chuff and walk away from the door and vanished from the camera's view.
"Being stuck here helps no one. We're going." They needed to leave, or at least get him out of a closed space. She grabbed hold of her helmet and quickly put it back on, adjust the visor to make it easier to see. She signaled to Samuel, her hands tense around her gun as she opened the door to let herself out. The moment she stepped outside, her weapon was raised, pointed down both directions of the hallway. She couldn't hear anything ( or see anything, for that matter ), so she deemed it safe enough to make a break for it.
Kendra didn't so much as hesitate as she moved through his house, keeping her gun raised while they moved towards the front door to make their escape. Nothing had come up while they moved together, which was a good sign. She'd come back later to kill the beast after they made their way to a secure area.
