Well, this was delightfully boring so far. Dull and repetitive as Upper Class functions tended to be, at least they usually had a bit of flare to them. And while this technically was still funded by the Upper Class citizens, none of the donors had been to keen on spending an excessive amount of their money on chumps from the Middle and Lower class. He couldn't particularly blame them, though. If his experience with them had taught him anything, it was that they wouldn't have properly been able to appreciate some of the finer things money could buy anyways. But he couldn't display his disdain for the 'thrilling' conversation the attendants here were giving him openly. It was a charity event, after all. So instead he just smiled patiently and nodded at their dull chatter, quietly marking the ones in his head that showed the telltale signs of magic addiction. At least he could possibly get some new clients out of this, if nothing else.

Kendra could have been working.
She could have been following a case and figuring out where the next raid was going to be. She could have had her nose in data, planning the steps their forces could take to keep people safe.
Instead she was at some bullshit fancy party surrounded by stuffy Upper Class citizens that didn't even feel like being there for more than a show. Certain she was part of their circle, but she wasn't there as any sort of patron. No, she was there with her 'partner' in a show of good faith as a bodyguard. Samuel happened to be valuable, and there wasn't much reason to risk his hide. A small sigh left her lips as she dodged a couple standing in her way, chin burying deeper into the neck of her shirt when Samuel came back into her sight.
She held a flute of champagne in each hand - Drink duty. At least she was getting paid.
"Samuel." She spoke his name gently, nodding to those near him while holding out the drink in her right hand to him.
"Having fun, I see."

But she was working, wasn't she? If work was always just fun and explosions, then it wouldn't be called work, now would it? Then again, her enjoyment of explosions had probably lowered some since she first started her job. But she was something of a masochist, so it was possible she was just waiting for a chance to get more scars or prosthetic limbs. There had to be some people who were into that sort of thing. But regardless of if she took pleasure in opportunities to injure herself, he was confident she'd do her job to make sure he didn't get any of his own. You never knew who might try to sneak into these sort of events, given its less than ideal location. A brief smile crossed his lips as he saw Kendra approaching, a hand reaching out to grab the glass of champagne. He needed about another five of these before he could even think about enjoying his time here. "Kendra. Oblivious to the mood, as always." He brought the glass to his mouth, giving a glance around the room. So many people here, and yet almost no one even remotely entertaining. It was almost impressive.

Working in her mind didn't include attending parties. Even if there was a good reason, the chances of them actually being attacked was unlikely. Possible, but unlikely. It was part of the reason she had her sidearm hidden and the blade in her left are polished. It wasn't as if she wanted more prosthetics, one was quite enough. Even for a so called masochist, that pain had been a bit too much. She also had more than enough scars, and hadn't he called them unattractive before? Well, they helped with intimidation at times.
"I'm not so sure, Samuel. You seem to be having riveting conversation. The event of the year, after all. Why you barely need me for company." Her arms crossed over her chest as she spoke, not moving to take a sip of her drink and simply holding it. He could have it once he finished the other. Kendra let her eyes glance over the crowd with him, though her inspection happened to be more in line with watching for any suspicious movement.
She couldn't have her lovely partner hurt, now could she?

Well, that was one of the clear indicators that Kendra hadn't been born into the Upper Class. Upholding one's place in society in order to prove useful was a duty drilled into most everyone from the Upper Class from a young age. Being popular wouldn't save you from being dropped if you were incapable, but it certainly didn't hurt. And really, he wondered what the process of polishing her arm blade was like. Certainly it must be awkward. Perhaps he should have asked her to do it at the party, just to see how the other attendees would respond. And the scars weren't particularly alluring, no. But she was the one chasing after more of them, not him. "If this is the event of the year then I may want to consider getting some bear genes spliced. Hibernation doesn't sound half bad with that information." Ah, fuck it. He hardly cared what these lower class people thought of him. Samuel quickly downed the rest of the drink before reaching out to grab the one in Kendra's hand. "See anyone particularly dangerous? That might spice up the evening."

Upper Class was far from what she had been born into. But that specific detail was her's and her's alone when it came to others outside the Secret Police. Samuel could assume where she came from, seeing as it wasn't much of a dinner conversation topic. Anything out of the ordinary had to look awkward to Samuel, or interesting. He did love to poke things until they exploded.
An airy laugh fell from her lips at his quip on bear genes, though just as quickly as it came, she had moved back to her neutral expression of observation.
"Oh, but you might sleep through the good bits. That wouldn't be very fun, now would it?" Her scarred brow raised towards him when he took the glass from her hand, but she didn't much resist. It had been for him, after all.
"From what I can tell everything seems calm. No one slinking around, save for a few people giggling and stealing away for a bit of privacy. Why not poke a few Lower Class citizens and see if they'll do tricks? I know you have your ways to convince them."

That was a topic he was interested in bothering her about soon, actually. She had far too many secrets, and it was quite rude actually. Considering how often he had to report to her about his business in the Lower Class and Slums, it was only fair he got a bit of knowledge about her affairs, no? And no no, she was the one who liked exploding things, he thought he'd established that. He just liked poking things until they broke down. "Is it terribly painful for you to laugh, Kendra? I would think so from the way you flinch away from it. But regardless, my expectations aren't particularly high. You should drink something yourself, though. If your alcohol tolerance is as low as your one for drugs that's bound to be interesting." He sighed slightly at her question, shaking his head. "Kendra, this is a charity event. I'm not going to get anyone addicted while they're at the party. I don't trust these folks to make it out the door before jacking themselves up, and that would make for a terrible press disaster. Not exactly beneficial for either of us. Really, have you no tact?"

Secrets were one thing she got to keep from him. Maybe not from her fellow officers, but didn't that make their relationship a bit more fun? Even if he reported to her, there were bound to be some secrets he kept.
"Laughter hurts, yes. It must have been that terrible accident I was in years ago. You remember, don't you? You brought me flowers." Laughter wasn't something she did often, but it did seem to flow a bit easier when around him. Troublesome, seeing as she needed to be alert at the moment.
"Sarcasm, Samuel. All these years and you still can't seem to tell when I'm using it. Funny that's what you assume I meant. Says quite a bit about you." She wasn't particularly fond of his 'business practices', but she knew it would be easier to watch him if she acted as his contact. Plus she got the see him, but whatever it wasn't like she enjoyed the company. A laugh started to build in the back of her throat, and she had all intentions to let the sound go - At least until something caught her eye.
"Samuel."
She practically hissed his name, right arm moving around his waist and resting there while she took hold of his clothing.
"Don't move. Act natural. You look lovely this evening, by the way." Maybe it was nothing, but she wasn't taking any chances.

No, it was fun when he got to keep secrets from her. Not the other way around. You would think she might actually like having someone keep secrets from her, since she could peer into so many other people's private affairs whenever she so pleased. It should be a nice break from her for once. And some people were big into that whole role reversal thing, no? "Oh Kendra, you poor thing. You lost your sense of humor long before that." And that was something no amount of medicinal science could restore, alas. "Mostly because I don't think you know when you're using it yourself. You've never been very honest, to me or yourself." He shrugged, taking another sip from his glass. Ugh, this wasn't even very high quality alcohol. This whole sham was so sloppy. But she didn't need to be fond of his practices, so long as they benefitted the government of Novus in the long run. His eyebrow raised as she slipped an arm around him, his relaxed posture not changing as he continued to drink. "If you wanted to get closer Kendra you could have just asked. Now people are staring."

Information was power if their world, and she wanted to have all of it at her fingertips. And while she could peer into the lives of others with the simple stroke of a few keys, she only did so when needed. Watching people in that way didn't exactly fall into her department. It did at times, but she wasn't going to sit there and listen to idle chatter all day in hopes of finding out a special new bread recipe. Was he into the role reversal thing? It wasn't something she had thought to ask about.
"Oh, you cut me deep, Samuel. Right into my humorless heart." With enough injections, even a sense of humor could potentially been developed for a person. Who even knew with the gene mods floating around. "Pardon, but I'm a very honest person. I can't much recall a time when I've lied to you." She had tried to keep herself honest and on the right path for years. Unlike that idiot brother of her's, she actually enjoyed the security of life at times.
"But I just can't keep away from you, Samuel. A little bit of staring won't hurt." Her eyes flicked towards the far end of the room, and she caught sight of three bodies moving through the crowd. A smile formed on her lips as she spun the two of them slightly so her left arm was between him and the wall. "Would now be a better time to try those 'getting closer' lines on you?"
30 seconds. 30 seconds and she'd shove his ass to the ground and do her job.
