"Practice that one at home, did you?" It sounded terribly terribly neat. "But I'm helping with that, no? So then if you don't consider yourself errant at all then I can hardly be considered nefarious." Well, it was all a matter of perspective, anyways. He tended to take the one that most rubbed Kendra the wrong way.
"Are you looking into getting a new head too?" He scoffed slightly. "I doubt brain work is their speciality, and besides it could be too late by the time you make your way to her, no? Speaking of which, who is 'she'?" He would terribly like to meet whoever was making Kendra's arms for her. Perhaps make a few suggestions. Since Kendra hadn't been terribly open to the idea of him making her an arm. God only knew why, when he had more than enough experience with the structure of her lost limb. Speaking of which, it wasn't very good for samples. None of the cells were even remotely fresh and he couldn't spare far too many seeing as it couldn't regenerate the ones lost.
"Depends on who you're asking, I suppose. Those connotations can be easily flipped." He shrugged slightly. "Practicality doesn't usually focus on kindness, Kendra. Tell me, why should I give such things to you for no cost? Are we lovers? Or did I miss some part in our contract where it says I am obligated to give such things to you. You asked me for a service, and I was willing to give it to you with the proper payment. That is how business works, no?"

"Have to keep the motto up." Neat was one way to describe her manner of speaking. She had loosened up with him considerable since being around him so often. Her manners had grown considerably lax. Slowly she had realized that was a mistake.
"She goes by Minerva. She's skilled at what she does, and provides me with the care I need. But as I said, I'm fine. If anyone needs a head check, it's you. Might have hit your head when I shoved you down before." Minerva was like a breath of fresh air, and someone she trusted when it came to cybernetics. Samuel could use up all of her arm - She owed him the other one if she ever wanted to fuck him, now didn't she?
"This isn't a business transaction, Samuel. Though I guess everything is with you." Every single damnable time she thought they might have been moving one step forward, he slapped on breaks and threw them four steps backwards. The 'lovers' comment was bitterly hilarious. "I wasn't asking for a service from you, and I most certainly wouldn't pay you for such a thing. If you'd rather to keep me as a professional and silent guard, say so. It would save trouble for the both of us."

"It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Don't you have people paid to make it do that? If that's the best they can do they might deserve a bump down to Lower Class. Maybe Middle if you're feeling generous and they're not there already."
He made a mental note of the name as she spoke it. He didn't think it was far too common, so it should be fairly easy to track the engineer down. He'd have to be sure to pay a visit later, then. He paused a moment though, thinking her words over. "My thought processes all seem to be proceeding as normal, so I doubt it. But it would be hard to tell if they were off track, so I suppose I will check myself as well when we return." Better safe than sorry, after all.
His brows knitted slightly together at her protest. "And why wouldn't it be? I possess a skill that you desire access to but do not have yourself or can't participate in by yourself, and so you would offer me something in exchange for said skill. No different than if you did ask me to build an arm for you or something of that manner. What I would 'rather' have has nothing to do with it, does it? If what to exchange really draws you to such a standstill then I can dock if off of your next paycheck, but I think you're being irrational in getting 'frustrated' about my perfectly logical reasoning."

"I'm a member of the Secret Police. We don't really have a department for 'memorable mottos'."
Hopefully she could warn Minerva before he actually decided to swing by. Why he would actually feel the need, she couldn't guess. For someone that didn't seem to give two shits about her as a person, he seemed to be interested in her life quite a bit.
"Just drop it, Samuel. Your 'perfectly logical' bullshit is really grating on my nerves, and quite frankly seeing as you're the one that brought this situation up to begin with, I'd appreciate it if we cut this discussion short." Her hands went back to untie her hair, letting red locks cascade over the front of her outfit while she combed her fingers through it. "I'm in no way asking for a service from you, or for you to provide a skill I need. Sorry not all of us see sex as a business transaction. Not to mention the fact I didn't even ask for this bullshit to begin with. You're the one that brought the topic up, and I replied with a quip about it seemingly bothering you to the point that you feel the need to stress it's important."
She looked over towards him, a sour look clearly overtaking her expression. "So why exactly is this topic so important to you, Samuel? Why exactly are you so damned concerned with the fact I've never kissed anyone, much less had sex. Does it bother you so much you feel the need to offer your 'services'," her fingers moved in air quotes at that, "in exchange for payment so I can fix this about myself? Because it certainly seems as if you're wanting to fix it yourself, but aren't committed enough to the idea so you actually act on it."

"Perhaps you should. That sort of things is what really riles up public morale, no? You do have a PR department, no?" And he was curious to see what sort of person Kendra trusted with making her arm, since she'd been so rude as to reject his offer. He'd seen the arm in action and it did well enough, so there was a possibility he could use some of the designs in her lab for inspiration.
"Is that because you can't think of a proper argument?" That did seem to be the point when most people got fed up with a conversation that had disagreeing sides. "But you're not particularly sorry about forcing your ideals and allotted importance of what a kiss means on me. And you asked me a question, Kendra. Usually those are asked with the intention of receiving a response." He wondered idly if they were getting close to his house. He didn't quite have the confidence in Kendra's self-control to spend much longer with her in this enclosed space.
"My concern stems because sexual interaction seems to be something you are interested in, but lack the self-confidence and know how to seek out yourself. Seeing as you are unlikely to pursue your own interests because of those traits, it seems to me as if keeping it at the forefront of your mind is the only way to possibly inspire you to fix your own problem. And I would terribly hate to see you rush into things, seeing as the last time you did that you lost an arm. Perhaps sex is less dangerous, but actual physical contact with another human being is probably a good step to take first before you leap to that. So while I am certainly capable of helping you reach your end goal, I am in no way obligated to as your problems are in the end not entirely my responsibility. Of course, if you can assure me you really have no interests in such matters then I'll drop the matter entirely. Otherwise, I will continue to act in your best self interest."

"That's the Common Police job, not ours." She was getting more frustrated as the minutes ticked on by. The car felt suffocating, and she wanted out. When the hell were they going to get to his place?
"How did I force my ideals onto you? Please, enlighten me. Because I remember no such thing." Her argument was simple enough, really. The person she wanted to enjoy happened to be one of the biggest assholes in all of Novus without even trying. Really, he deserved a trophy or something that just said 'biggest cocksleeve 2864'.
Kendra gave a barking laugh, her hands combing back through her hair. "Lack the self confidence? That's funny." For one, it was an insult to her pride. For another, it was assuming she never had people approach her with interest. And she did have those quite often, actually. For fucks sake, someone asked her out before the lovely event they had attended. Such a funny man. She bounced her leg, jaw clenched.
"Never said you were obligated, Sam. Never even thought you'd help anyway. Just gotta crush these bullshit thoughts about you and everything will be fine. Because I can assure you, I sure as fuck am interested in such matters, and I damn sure am interested in you - but fuck all if that matters. You acting in my 'best interest' is what you think is good for me, but all it does is remind me of just how far off I am from what I want. So thanks for the words of how inadequate and unlikely I am to become someone's lover that I might be interested in. Best interest. Why do you even care."

"I suppose they're looking for brawn more than brain nowadays in the Secret Police? Shame, I remember the good days when members needed to have both." Propaganda was necessary for any good ruling force, no? And there were boat loads of it required to keep the Secret Police portrayed as the almighty protectors of the city.
"You're expecting me to hold the same values of romance and physical contact as you do, and now you're getting clearly upset, or 'frustrated' in your words, because my views are not the same as yours. Are you expecting me to change mine? Because that seems rather forceful." It was hardly his fault she had such feelings about him, so what use was it getting mad at him?
And oh dear, she looked nervous. She always touched her hair too much when she was shaken. Just from this, though? He thought she was being a touch too sensitive. "In this specific area, not necessarily overall." He shrugged. If she was confident enough to find someone she liked and pursue them, she would have done it by now. It took confidence to say yes to someone else asking as well. Pride and self-confidence could be two very different things.
"And yet you clearly held expectations of me anyways, no?" Completely unfounded ones, as she'd soon learned. He would have thought she knew how he worked better. It was a tad bit disappointing. His eyebrows raised slightly as she continued on her rant, the car slowing to a stop outside his apartment. Now that was interesting. Explained some things perhaps, but opened up a terrible amount of other questions. "Interested in me? Why is that precisely?" He couldn't think of having given her any particular reason to be. "And I care because if you go recklessly leaping into some romance with no experience and get swept away, I will be down one body guard and contact within the secret police. Lust is a terrible distracting thing if you don't know how to portion it, Kendra. Besides, I like helping people in reasonable enough manners." He stepped out of the car as the driver came to open the door for him. Samuel glanced back at the woman inside his car. "Are you coming or do you plan to stay 'frustrated' in there?" Hard to do her job like that, he imagined.

"The good days... Samuel, you're younger than I am." She didn't miss him insulting her intelligence. But she wasn't going to comment on it. She simply filed that little quip away for later days to stew and brew over. She was good at that.
"If I had thought for a moment we have the same values, you wouldn't exactly be having this conversation - now would we?" She had never thought he kept the same mindset as her. He wasn't nearly as strict on himself. There he went, twisting her words and explanations for things. She was allowing herself to trip up and be bent. She hated it.
Nervous? More like more pissed than she had been in years. She hated these games when they played out in such a way, even more so when he was being so fucking blunt and just... Detached. But what did she expect? This was Samuel. He was always detached.
Kendra shot him a glare. Maybe she was confusing expectations with reality. More than likely. Her head had been in the clouds a bit too often as of late. Not enough focus on work. Not enough focus on what actually mattered. Her hands curled into balls, tugging at her pants as he spoke and questioned her. He didn't deserve a response. He didn't deserve anything from her. She was his keeper, he was her job. That was all they were. It was all they would ever be. And the sooner she accepted that, the sooner she could get back on track and stop the pointlessly frivolously thoughts that swarmed her during the waking hours of her life.
The expression on her face stayed steeled when he asked if she was coming. Her hand grabbed hold of the door and opened it, slamming it shut once she was out. Hands moved to adjust her coat, tugging at the center hem before running under the sleeves while she walked over towards Samuel to 'assist' him inside. If he wanted to play, fine. She'd play exactly how she knew how. He wasn't the only one that could freeze people. She'd fucking make him burn if it was the last thing she did.

He shrugged slightly at her comment. "Perhaps, but I read what history I can. Easier to progress forward if you know what's already been done." And really, why did she have to take everything so personally? Wasn't she the one who'd said that the Secret Police couldn't even come up with a decent job description?
"And yet you held expectations of me, as I said before. You were clearly disappointed." And why should he be hard on himself? It didn't exactly benefit him at all. It wasted time needlessly. But yes, he couldn't say Kendra had ever been particularly good at conversations once she got 'frustrated'. Her 'cool' wasn't lost too easily, but once it was she crumpled easily. If she was annoyed with losing, then perhaps she should just get better at playing the game.
"Really Kendra, slamming the door?" How incredibly immature. Who exactly was supposed to be the supervisor between the two of them, again? But he walked easily through the door when she held it open, smiling slightly and offering her a thank you. No need to be impolite now, was there? "And I didn't miss that you didn't answer my question." He spoke as he undid the coat he'd been wearing for the night, tossing it over the back of a couch. "Did you still want a head scan?"

Expectations weren't something she actually had for him. Why should she? She didn't expect anything from him... Right? Of course not, why would she? It was just stupid one sided attraction. Because they were together, or something. And of course she crumbled when angry. If it happened so rarely, how was she expected to be a master of controlling it just yet?
'Would you rather I take it out on you' were the words she wanted to say, though she refrained. He seemed to forget just what she was to him. His life was in her hands, protection - or destruction. It would be good for him to remember.
She closed the door after him, making sure the door was locked and sealed properly. Checking security, looking over camera, watching data. She'd need to connect to his network. "I never wanted a scan." Her voice was flat while pulling a PDA from an inner pocket of her coat. She removed a wire and plugged it into his security system, lines of data moving over the screen while she watched it to see if anything was amiss.
"Go take care of your scan and shower. If you're hungry, send me a message for what you'd like and I'll prepare it. I'll be monitoring your NUIP while we're apart to make certain you're safe." She kept her back to him, eyes glued to her handheld. Things seemed calm enough.
