May 23, 2860___ Stuffy. That was really the only word Kendra could think to describe the setting. Not that her graduation had been any different, save for the fact she was up on the stage and being showered with medals. Commendation after commendation. No wonder she had been approached to join the Secret Police so soon after her graduation. It had been only a few months? It really didn't matter.
There were only a few people left to announce, and the person she had come to see already walked across the stage. She had to admit, he looked nice from her distant chair. She wondered - Had he noticed her? Red wasn't the most common hair color people picked, from what she could recall. Natural, or otherwise. And seeing as her new job involved watching anything and everyone, confirming that would be easy.
Should she have told Samuel she was coming? No, that wasn't necessary. Finding him afterwards would be easy enough. A quick 'congratulations' and she'd be on her way. They didn't have much reason at all to socialize, and their year as partners was... Interesting, to say the least. Whatever, really. The ceremony was nearly over.

He had to agree this was less than exhilarating. The speeches were much the same as they'd been at Kendra's graduation, and they'd barely passed as entertaining even then. He'd gotten an award or two himself, but he hadn't quite strived for excellence the same way she had. They hardly meant anything anyways, especially to those from the Upper Class. He didn't exactly need some shiny bits of metal to prove his worth. The Test would do that well enough when he took it in the next week. It wasn't as if there was any chance of him scoring low on it, after all.
He hadn't seen Kendra in the crowd, no. Hadn't given much thought to the audience at all beyond a briefly flashed smile in their direction when he'd crossed the stage and shook the hand of the academy's director. And now he had the joy of sitting through the rest of these mostly boring people get their names read off in a listless tone.
He breathed a slight sigh of relief when the last words were finally said, standing to give a final salute. The uniformity of it all was so dull. When they were released, he quickly began to weave his way through the crowd towards the exit while other students stayed to mingle. He didn't have much reason to stay here and do small talk. He was sure there would be some interesting gatherings later on tonight, but nothing really entertaining until all the family and friends had dispersed.

If she had to guess, all the graduations had similar speeches. Maybe the only difference was if someone happened to die during training, but that didn't happen often at all. Unlike her partner from before, Kendra had more reasons to strive and earn her place than Samuel did. Seeing as she originally grew up in the Slums, and all that jazz. Though that had been her little secret, and it would stay her little secret.
Ha, but him saluting did look nice. Kendra crossed her legs over, leaning forward as her eyes watched him moving away from the stage. Leaving already? Really now, he should have stayed a bit longer to at least keep up appearances. She had done so for quite a few hours afterwards, but he also wasn't in the same position as she was.
Kendra stood up from her seat, grateful it was closer to the exit than the stage. Much easier to stop him for at least a moment. Of course, she could have just let him go and not spoken to him again, but it was a special day. She could make an acceptation.
A hand rose to her ear as she picked out his number and gave him a quick call, moving to lean on a wall away from the crowds. If he would actually pick up, she had no idea. He looked like he was in quite the hurry.

Yes, not usually too many who died during training. That much was reserved for the saps who continued on into the actual Common Police ranks. Or some of the future Secret Police members no doubt in the crowd, but they were usually a bit more valued. And he had very little work to do to keep his appearance up. He'd done very well to keep himself popular within his class, but now that they had graduated he only needed to worry about entertaining those who would stay in or rise up to the Upper Class. And they were fairly occupied at the moment, so he had no reason to give the others his time.
An eyebrow rose slightly as a faint ringing sounded in his ear and a name flashed across his vision. How curious. He tapped a hand against his temple, maneuvering his way out of the thick of the crowd. "Calling just to wish me congratulations, or are you actually here?" Somewhat strange if she was, she didn't seem much the type to return to this kind of hell hole. He was possibly touched. "Seeing as I'm the one being celebrated today, I'll let you find me if you are."

"Just you being celebrated? My, someone has a big ego." She almost hadn't attended the ceremony, but something had made her want to. Didn't much matter what anymore. One last meeting with him? That might have been it. Seeing him for all that time in the academy prepared her well enough for the types of people she would encounter once out in the 'world'. Keeping to the lower classes didn't help with egos typically.
"Don't leave too quickly. I'd hate to miss you."
Kendra ended the call, her eyes having never left him while he moved through the crowd. It was somewhat surprising he hadn't left like planned. Should she be touched? No doubt he needed to kill time anyway. Nothing to overthink. She made her way towards him, easily maneuvering around the crowd and approaching him from the side - her hand reached out to grab his arm ( or hand? she wasn't sure. ) to get his attention.
"Miss me, Samuel?"

"Between the two of us. You're smart enough to know that." And oh dear, was she so ready to dismiss him? Forget the being touched part. Well, it didn't much matter how she felt. He was positive they'd be seeing a good bit of each other in the near future. Samuel was looking for a business partner, after all. And she had all the credentials he needed in one. Now was as good a time to discuss it with her as any, though he didn't think he'd open with it. Besides, she wasn't likely to be at the parties later on, so he could spare some time. Though it most likely would be best if they moved away from here quickly. He didn't think either of them were fond of needless distractions and prattle.
His eyes cut to the side as an arm reached towards him, his body easily shifting to stay out of her grasp. He didn't much appreciate being manhandled. But an easy smile flitted across his lips. "No more than appropriate, unfortunately. Shall we go somewhere less...bothersome?" Well, he'd thought for a moment for a more polite word, but figured it best to cut to the chase. Keeping up appearances had gotten a bit tiring and he wasn't in the mood to sustain it with people who wouldn't give him benefits for it.

Already with the insults. It was going to be an interesting last meeting. With how busy work was about to make her, and how intense the training ( personal and otherwise ), she wouldn't have time for playing around with Samuel. No time for parties, not that she went to them before. No time for distractions. Just work. Always work.
"And here I thought we had something special." Far from that, but the jokes were nice on occasion. She hadn't much gotten to make them in a while. Why not get one last taste? "That sounds nice, actually. There should be a few rooms down the hall, or the actual hall." She stepped past him, motioning for him to follow after her.
She glanced back at him, looking up more than she remembered. Had he gotten taller? Well, it had been quite a while since she'd actually been around him like this.

Insults? He'd called her smart, hadn't he? He hadn't realized that was offensive. And what exactly was she headed to, her death? He was fairly certain that the Secret Police didn't nail a sign that said 'no fun allowed' to your back when you signed on. Not that he knew she was in it, of course. Not for certain. He had suspicions though, which were mostly based upon solid arguments. He'd find out soon enough though.
"A vague term, unfortunately. Sorry to disappoint." He laughed lightly. Perhaps best to remind her that human beings were in fact capable of that. "Let's go for a room. People will be flooding the halls soon enough once the lack of personal space here gets to them." And then the area outside the academy would be flooded soon afterwards. Not too many people wanted to return to the classrooms after finally escaping them. He followed after her, giving a quick glance up and down. She did seem a bit smaller, although it was just because he had indeed gained some height. It was looking like he had several more inches left, but that wasn't exactly unexpected. Funny to see her so short though.

A back handed compliment. Did that fit better? Maybe she wasn't heading to her death, but there wasn't really going to be time for other things outside of work. Paperwork, patrols, anything in-between. Though, him knowing she was part of the SP wasn't something she had thought on for a long time. Certainly the thought of him being selected had crossed her mind, but she doubted he'd want to be associated with them.
"You have time to make up for it." His laugh made her fingers twitch. It had been a while. She forgot just how much it could grate on her nerves. "A room it is. Hopefully one will be unlocked." Or she'd just unlock it herself. One last 'fun' thing in the classrooms. It wouldn't hurt.
"The uniform looks nice, by the way." She said while keeping her eyes forward and stopping in front of a classroom door. She gave the handle a slight jiggle, an electronic lock pick sliding from her sleeve. The lock gave way with a soft 'click', and she was certain to keep the device hidden up the sleeve of her coat. "There we go, seems we were in luck." She shot him a grin and slid the door open, letting him walk in first before following after and closing the door behind them.

Perhaps it did. He hadn't particularly meant it to be like that. It showed he expected more of her. That was complimentary right? Thought highly of her and that sort of nonsense. And my, that sounded like an awfully boring job. He didn't imagine that most of the Secret Police took it so seriously. He didn't doubt their dedication, but you could be hard working and still function like a normal human being. But she was...mostly correct in her assertion that he didn't want to be associated with them. He was aware that he was an eligible candidate, certainly. After all, he was a highly intelligent member of the Upper Class. Usually the sort of person they sprung for. But it wasn't exactly his 'fit'. Better to have someone else do the dirty work there for him.
"Never said I was that sorry." Ah yes, he had forgotten how much she hated seeing people enjoy themselves. None of those silly emotions for Kendra Saunders, were there? "Yes, hopefully." He knew none of them would be. He'd been at this school long enough to know how annoyingly on top of these things they were. But it provided him with an opportunity.
He glanced at his sleeve momentarily as she commented on the outfit, twisting his arm slightly. "Not the worst thing, I suppose. Feel bad for those that didn't think to get it fitted. Looks much less appealing. Wish I could say I'd wear it again, but I'm not much thinking of continuing into the Common Police." And ah, there went the door. Trying to play it off, was she? He returned the grin, walking through the door. "How lucky indeed." He'd been planning to just kick it down ( nothing he couldn't pay for ) if she hadn't had something up her sleeve ( literally it seemed ), but this worked well for him. "So, what inspired you to come and see me today? You're not exactly the sentimental type."
